Thief shot while stealing bike!

If a civilian had fired at the thief, he'd be under arrest...

If the circumstances were the same (minus IDing as a cop), it sounds like it would be a justified shoot for anyone. The "suspect" reached for something, or at least appeared to be reaching for something. Personally, I wouldn't wait to see if it was a gun, knife, or a pack of gum.

I'd say the fact that the thief is still alive and the van got away without flat tires and a new bullet hole ventilation system is evidence that the cop showed incredible restraint.

He won't be winning any awards for marksmanship.

I'm not defending the perp.LOL. Don't know who he is and I don't care about him... However, it seems that when a police officer is involved in a shooting, the officer's reason for discharging his weapon is always the perp was reaching for something... the NUMERO UNO and BEST excuse to kill someone and get away. if you're a cop...LOf'enLoud. Seems like police protocol after a shooting is to say the person was reaching for something... open and shut case situation. LOL

If this is true, hardly surprises me. There's not exactly a lot of situations in which an officer can discharge his weapon. The only one I know of besides 'reaching for weapon' is 'has weapon pointed at someone' (well, plus misc. uncommon special situations).

So is it really surprising?

^^^ every other day in oakland. what ever happen to having to see the gun be for you shoot. It now ok for cops to kill you if he even thinks you have a gun. Suspect may be reaching for somthing? now means cops life is in danger:wtf

Doesn't seem to smart to allow a perp to get close enough to touch you. The cop could have ended up with a knife in his gut, and his bike gone. The thieves got away with the bike, plus he will probably sue the cop for his injuries as unjustified.

no, not suprising. just a good excuse even though there might not have been any weapons involved.

Lucky for oaklamd, there is going to be an investigation for the officer involved shooting death of the oakland barber shop owner. teh barber was also reaching for something

Keep shooting until they stop moving. Thieving aholes.

if it were oaklamd, the thief would of gotten away and the neighbor's cat would of been shot three times...

No worries. The injured perp got ditched by his buddy in the van with the bike, so ratting him out is fair game. Let them have their slapfight in prison.

Unless it's gang related. The cops would be hard pressed to get anything then :|

'Sounds like the cop handled it right. Identified himself. The perp goes down to one knee, then feels bold and comes at the officer. Still the officer is playing it cool. Then the perp starts digging around in his jacket. Time to take action. No sympathy here for the sorry-ass perp.

And yea, hope he gets his bike back in one piece.

i hate thieves, don't get me wrong.

but shooting this guy? i don't believe that this cop thought that his life was in danger, i honestly think that this cop was scared. he never saw a gun and he wasn't man enough to fight with his hands. this sounds pretty bad.

luckily for this cop he's in san diego where this type of behavior is accepted.

pretty weak. hopefully my assumptions are wrong.

According to San Diego police detectives, the off-duty officer identified himself and ordered one man to the ground. After initially taking a knee, the suspect got up and walked towards the officer grabbing at him several times, detectives said.

The suspect hit the officer, then turned and placed both hands inside the midsection of his jacket. Believing the suspect was arming himself, the officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect,” detectives wrote in the press release. “The suspect walked away, and the officer called 911 and followed him until responding units took him into custody.

Between the account provided in bold, plus the fact that he was outnumbered, it sounds like he reacted appropriately.

I knew it wouldn't take long for BARF to turn the victim into the criminal. :laughing

For all of those who want to wait and see the gun before you shot.... we will play a little perception and reaction game with Dart guns.... you stand there with your dart gun anyplace you want it..... then wait to actually see me pull a dart gun out of my coat.... we will see who gets hit with the dart first....

Given perception and reaction lag times... it won't be me.....

Oh if by some off chance, you did hit me before I hit you with a dart then I am going to claim that I was pulling it out to drop it on the ground and you shot me for no reason.

So, now you have to wait until I am actually pointing the dart gun at you before you can decide if you want to shoot me with your dart gun or not....

Then we will play the perception and reaction lag time game where I take your dart gun away from you and shoot you with it.

if teh perception of the officer was off, and there was no threat and officer still shot the person, would the police officer plead that he was at fault or use the he was reaching for something in his coat or pocket excuse. it's about perception which could go either way... we don't know if the officer meant to shoot or not... it goes down to officers recollections vs. the scumbag. however, the argument is that once a police officer uses the excuse of he was reaching for whatever, cop has an open and shut case... officer is at right... just look back at teh oscar grant case.... guy was on the ground with hands behind his back. maybe the officer seen grant reaching for an invisible gun:rofl
