Thoughts on SUV?

for me i don't have that kind of money to waste on new cars, i buy used. on the other hand i don't really care for cars much anyway, its just a transportation device. it has to be safe and reliable, body on frame truck is the way to go.

Same here. I'd probably have to make a buck fifty a year with a really secure position before I'd be willing to take on five figure debt over a massively depreciating asset. We haven't spend over $7k on an auto in the last 15 years, just don't care about 'em enough.

Me? My crf450 that I bought like 5yrs ago was $2k. The biggest purchase was when I came into some cash, so it wasn't exactly a well thought out purchase. I bought a new dl650 for I think 67xx otd.

Valid point. Nowadays "affordable" is filled by Kia, Hyundai, etc... and affordable = compact + built on a car platform half the time.

I'm still waiting for Dodge to crank out a Tahoe-sized (ie, full size) Durango.

Tundra / Sequoya(I think that's what Toyota's full size SUV is called)
Tahoe/Suburban/Chevy 1500
Yukan/GMC 1500 (same as tahoe/chevy)
Excursion(Expedition?)/F150
Navigator/Blackwood
_______ / Ram 1500?
Excursion hasn't been made in a long time, they were 00-05. Expedition is "based on" F150 but IRS, so not really. Not sure about the other ones.

i saved $15k from sticker buying 1 year old used 2014 with 26k miles vs 2015 1 trim lower brand new

15k is worth 26k miles and its the same exact truck from 2014 -2015 so its a win win for me

shut up:teeth

we don't talk about that…..

First rule of motorcycles - you don't talk about the price you pay for the bike, just the parts...and the parts don't count.

As for the Excursions and Navigators and everything - my point is that nearly every major truck manufacturer has an SUV based on the same platform size. Except Dodge. Why? Chevy is probably my second choice but Dodge is my first.

I think it's funny that the Suburban (SUV based on full-length truck chassis) has been around since the 1930's, and available in 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton configurations, but when Ford introduces the same thing in the form of the Excursion, they get blasted for being oversize, inefficient, and unnecessary.

And Dodge never even tried. 1 ton, single rear wheel, Cummins Diesel powered Dodge SUV anybody? :teeth

:laughing I'd love it but I didn't have something quite THAT big in mind. I just want a Tahoe-esque sized Durango. Give it the same engine options as the Ram 1500, similar chassis, shorter overall length obviously, but more space inside and wider than the current JGC or Durango.

I imagine part of why Ford caught shit for it is that the F250 is significantly larger than the F150 and therefore the Excursion is significantly larger than the Expedition. Most people won't notice the difference between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Suburban, although they don't currently make a 3/4 ton. When did they make a 1 ton?

The Excursion was blasted because it wouldn't fit in anyone's garage.

If the general point is that they're also in the 'really big' category, yes of course. If it's that they're literally the same overall dimension and/or that 'burbs are actually bigger, should be able to solve that pretty easy with some specs. I'm just relaying what a common complaint was from when they were introduced, that many wouldn't fit into a standard garage.

And there are micro townhome garages that won't fit a crown vic. And there are also cats.

This wasn't a townhouse. It fit just fine in the townhouse garage. My point is that F-150s are big too.

i was wondering the same thing, but i do recall seeing a few dually suburbans from the same body style as your truck. i kinda figured they were custom jobs that an owner or 3rd party made but if not, that could be the 1 ton :dunno

The 1973-1991 generation had the 1-tons. I believe the dually 'burbs that are seen from time to time are all conversions.

The Excursion started off on the wrong PR foot. Does anyone remember when they were first announced? It was pretty subdued because of the backlash of the Gulf war. There was a ton of bad press about our gas guzzling culture and here was Ford, about to release to biggest land barge of all.

Me personally, I still think the only worthwhile SUV to buy is the 'Burb. I can stomach the Tahoe for the most part. But I'm an old school Chevy truck guy. The thought of buying something "big" and not being able to actually put "big" things in it drives me bonkers. I look and the inside vs. outside of many of the offering out there and just shake my head.

My personal "perfect" example of useless is the BMW X6. All the size and guzzling of the large-ish SUV... But lets give it the cargo area of a compact, by making it a fastback! It's literally the worst "benefits" of each type!
JUNK!
