Thoughts on SUV?

the accessories market on a depreciable asset is a fools market :laughing

Meh. Modifications to meet owner needs/wants aren't really tangible assets from a financial standpoint, and as long as that's understood going in, it's perfectly acceptable.

truecar.com

cargurus.com

carsdirect.com

take their lowest marked price, and then get another 1-2k off that

surprise they said my truck was worth 29,5 msrp retail for used 2014, but somehow i got it for 28k

sticker was 34k

build me a new Tahoe just for giggles. Since when is a generic base Tahoe 50K+???

did i miss something

an upscale Tahoe:laughing:rofl

4G and Bluetooth aint upscale, not in my book

And heated/cooled seats with 10-way power movement...and seat memory, and GPS, and heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats, and rear A/V system with separate controls and monitors, etc...

Depends what you want your SUV for. Best SUV I ever owned was an 04 Toyota 4Runner SR5. Bare basic and that thing was bullet proof! Hauled tons of crap, towed trailers, moved furniture, safes, etc. . Felt very safe on crazy trips to Tahoe in the snow. Absolutely rock solid! Panasonic battery lasted 9 years (was still good but decided to switch it just in case). Regret selling it for a more family Acura MDX. If you like to do some or most the above I would not recommend an MDX. Eyeing the Highlander Hybrid now...

which is totally fine, but its still a Tahoe. As a car buyer i want a entry level big SUV without most what you call "high end" options.

the problem is most manufactures don't give you an option anymore. The Tahoe is 50-70k.

i think this customer base should be supplied by GMC Denali version and the basic Tahoe option more affordable.

Now the customer has no option other then choosing the badge on the car, the price is almost the same.

Valid point. Nowadays "affordable" is filled by Kia, Hyundai, etc... and affordable = compact + built on a car platform half the time.

I'm still waiting for Dodge to crank out a Tahoe-sized (ie, full size) Durango.

Tundra / Sequoya(I think that's what Toyota's full size SUV is called)
Tahoe/Suburban/Chevy 1500
Yukan/GMC 1500 (same as tahoe/chevy)
Excursion(Expedition?)/F150
Navigator/Blackwood
_______ / Ram 1500?

I also kick around the thoughts surrounding depreciation schedules.

You buy a car for 10k it's supposed to last 4 years 100k miles it depreciates at 2500 dollars a year

if that same car now lasts 8 years 200k miles you double it's price to depreciate it the same...

I think todays cars are more reliable and go for much longer and the manufacturers have learned that we aren't replacing them as fast as we used to be... so they can/have to, raise prices.

That is absolutely what is happening. And it is deceiving, because I think people are driving more than ever. So it's kind of a wash, but still costs way more.

Buying used really is the way to go, yet I keep finding myself buying new. What is wrong with me?!

dat new car smell :drool

I've personally never owned a new car - I always buy used

my wife had never owned new until recent. This will be the last, and only, new car that I help fund.

The new Tahoe/Yukon is a really, really nice vehicle for $55k. So are the new Suburbans. When we replaced my wife's minivan, I lobbied hard for one but she wanted something smaller. Anyone who hasn't driven either the new or last model Suburban doesn't know what they are missing. They are great driving vehicles. We wound up getting a Q7, which I like, but I'd trade it for a Suburban in a millisecond.

We had a '94 'burb that had like 230k on it when it was stolen. Aside from being a little loose, it was still fairly solid, but clearly an American vehicle and I never really like it much. We now have an '03 z71 'burb with 140k and it's actually a somewhat likable vehicle. I can't wait to replace it with an '07+, they're again noticeably improved and I think finally make that step to becoming a truly decent rig. I'd definitely aim for Tahoe size next time though. Anyway, +1 to your wordsies.

Excursion was based on the F250. Expedition/Navigator has a F150 frame but since '04 no solid rear axle. i have the 04 Expedition, don't need a solid rear axle.

Most people overlook the Nissan platform Titan/Armarda. its a great Truck with outstanding mechanical components. it based on the Patrol chassis which is used all around the world for hardcore offroading.

that is what bothers me. the Tahoe platform is basic and very cheap to produce. the interior is really good compare to what it used to be and therefore more expensive.

But still doesn't justify a price jump to 50-70k. GM is making a fortune on the truck platform. thats why the can "give" them away after a year and still make money.

for me i don't have that kind of money to waste on new cars, i buy used. on the other hand i don't really care for cars much anyway, its just a transportation device. it has to be safe and reliable, body on frame truck is the way to go.
