Tyre Nichols. Rest in Peace.

As I recall, that's exactly how it DOES get proven - patterns of behavior. That was how stop & frisk was stopped, although that one was probably the most blatant intentional example in recent history.

Your assessment is fair and true.

Pete, have experienced racial profiling?

I'm not attacking you, but more because I've met you before and I respect your opinions on this and a ton of other topics.

We've touched on it before - a bit, yes, though it wasn't really DWB so much as how I was treated after I got pulled over. Got read the riot act, called "boy" a lot, threatened, guns pointed, walk backwards, etc, yadda yadda yadda, military ID is probably what saved me a trip to jail.

From the flip side of it, I've seen it in action from people who were either oblivious or didn't care who was around them. I'd count this as having "experienced" it as well. For example, I have a Mexican friend who's straight up white ginger looking. Both his parents look like stereotypically brown Mexicans, same with his brother, he just turned out ginger. He's experienced various forms of racial profiling as well, sometimes while with me.

On a lighter note, I've also been mistaken for hispanic more often when overseas. I've had women come up to me in clubs and start whispering spanish in my ear, which I always get a kick out of because I have no idea what they're saying :laughing. Most people who meet me take me for some sort of hispanic mix, and I've had a couple black friends swear I had black in my ancestry somewhere. I don't see it and don't think I'm quite THAT dark, but I do get pretty dark tan in the summer.

I also don't get it as often now that I started growing my hair out more, I guess that's more of a giveaway. I used to rock a close buzzcut, high fade with a #2 on top, lined up nice with a straight razor, and almost always at a black barbershop. So I guess I "fit" the look better and when you're out in a mixed group that's 50/50 black/white, and you're as dark as some of the more obviously AA guys...<shrug> Come to think of it though, I got lumped in with the group by others outside our group far more often when I was with them. We used to ride with the Ruff Ryders a lot, and we rolled deep. Our club was a split off but there wasn't much bad blood that I ever experienced, just different groupings.

feels so weird to even be reading this as someone with very little chance of ever experiencing law enforcement aggression. wind them up, and turn them loose. reminds me of how much i hate the word and concept of 'tool'. it goes so much deeper than the front line executioners. where's the accountability for that?

Just an observation, but...as others have alluded to in other threads, our police force is a reflection of our society.

Think of a job, an industry, a nonprofit - anywhere you've ever worked, and I can guarantee a significant majority of people have encountered coworkers and such who have little to no accountability at their job. We talk about people "failing upward" all the time. Of course we'd hope that when it comes to lives hanging in the balance, there would be more checks in place to catch things, but...there's just not. Arguably, more peoples lives are ended or severely affected by the pen than the sword, and yet there are plenty of incompetent lawyers, politicians, VPs and C-suite, etc types who have just as little accountability and even lower approval ratings.

We can and should strive for improvement, always, but I don't necessarily think it should be a particular surprise to anyone or an unforeseen circumstance that shit can go sideways real fast no matter what or who you're dealing with.

It brings a more philosophical point to the debate - and begs the question, do we think society is rotten to its core? Or are there still good chunks worth saving? How do you cut out rot without compromising structural integrity? Is the bracing and shoring up we're doing going to last? Or is it a futile balsa wood effort against a leaning Millennium Tower?

'Falling upward' is called the "Peter Princple".

Where in an employee is promoted to his highest point of incompetence and there he stays. (Promoted on his job performance until the latest promotion is into a position he cannot perform.)

That is the genesis of serial 'management FAIL'. But we bypass those guys anyway, just to get the job done.

I don't think society is in failure mode, the good stuff is just hard to see because the bad stuff is so very noisy.

Could be wrong but I'd prefer to go out as an optimist.

leave it up to the news and multiple democrats to blame it on white supremecy. gotta love it.

I wouldnt be surprised if one or more of those POS off'ed themselves. Probably a good thing for all them to do.

Please talk politics in the politics forum.

So, a thing about this shit that is kind of bothering me is the Paul Pelosi video being released at the same time.

Like, they are playing the damn Pelosi video all over, but they always freeze the image before the hammer strike, because it is, "too disturbing." Paul survived and seems to be recovering well.

Then in the same news broadcast, they show the fuck out of this young kid literally getting beat to death.

I'm not sure if that is racism, or a political agenda, probably both, but the willful obvious projection of a double standard is aggravating to me.

I think you are right to be aggravated.

Just saw that the officers involved all had multiple prior complaints against them, but no real action was taken, and the officers remained in the unit. Looks like SCORPION was rotten from the top down.
I guess the clue was in the name.

Its part of the de-humanization and desensitizing process.

Return of The Riders, lol.

Flew right over my head but a solid point.

Edit. Perhaps the media has an agenda.

I'm not taking a stance on this, but, devils advocate.

It may be possible that some news agencies recognizes that police often are given the benefit of the doubt in their actions and felt like without actually seeing everything as it happens some viewers may not believe it, or downplay it. The Pelosi video doesn't have the same weight to it.

The news source that I used for both stories had the full videos, but I don't watch Cable news shows...

Oh, most certainly they do, but let's be areal, we honestly knew that already. Unbiased journalism has largely gone the way of the Dodo.

One can only hope that much like the Dodo, it will be fit to return soon, but I think it less likely.

The better question to ask perhaps is if this remarkably unbalanced bias so easily slipped past your immediate notice, more important than what it says about the media, what does it say about you?

What can you learn from that revelation and how can that knowledge make you more of the person you want to be tomorrow?

That's how I live my every single day. :dunno

Well, I think we can speculate all day about what the bias represents, and I am not the kind of conspiracy thinker who believes these models were designed as some kind of evil master agenda. More likely they simply represent the bias most humans perform in their decision making in their lives every single day. The clear and painfully obvious case here is an excellent opportunity for self reflection on both how we view, and choose to interact with the world.
