What to use now that Photobucket is no longer hosting photos

Aw man...

I've been noticing the Pop-Up ads thing a lot lately...

Test -

This thread from 2014 is working for me.
Last weekend. Bowman Lake, Henness Pass, Ebbetts Pass - Two nights camping. 560 miles of smiles. - My friend biffed within the first few miles of Bowman Lake Road and didn't want to ride much dirt after that so it became more of a paved ride on the second day after we got back to Hennes Pass where it's paved.

I believe they give you a limited amount of bandwidth when it comes to img tagging pictures elsewhere.

Your pics work for me now, but it wouldn't surprise me if they stop working soon.

Okay, you guys pushing imgur. Teach me how to embed this photo. I can't figure it out.

What I expected to be able to do doesn't seem to work.

Nevermind. Read the fine print...

Also, regarding imgur, you can put various letters before the .jpg to get different embedded sizes.

s is small (way small)
m is medium (still fairly small)
l is large (more like medium)
h is huge (what I use)

If the original image is fairly small (like what you uploaded), it'll be huge if posted without resizing. I prefer uploading full size and putting h before .jpg rather than resizing before uploading.

example:

LIQfMSps.jpg

LIQfMSpm.jpg

LIQfMSpl.jpg

LIQfMSph.jpg

LIQfMSp.jpg

in the order I mentioned

this isn't a huge photo to begin with, most are larger so you really need to resize

That's a nice trick. I've always sized shared images to where I want them, but in some cases I would have both a small/medium and a large (but not huge) version. I could enjoy that feature. :thumbup

by the way, the biggest one there is the original size - not huge.

"huge" is the second biggest that I posted.

Still easier to use imgur

From the imgur terms of use:

"Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it."

Am I reading this wrong, or is using imgur for third party hosting illegal?

I sort of think you're both right and wrong, but I just registered there and they offer the IMG links so it must not be against the rules.

Imgur content is posted on Reddit in vast quantities. You're fine linking some photos in your barf posts. Hell, they even provide bbcode links to your images for posting on forums

Sharing from Google is a PITA. I have sometimes gotten it to work. Other times not at all. For a while, I think Google still had a legacy version of Picasa that you could use. I'm not sure any more.

It works fine for me, but I guess that doesn't really matter does it. :laughing

Let's try this:

Ok...The photo from Google Photos has to be in a shared folder. So, share a folder, then follow the instructions from the website I posted. In short, you add a '?.jpg' onto the long ass link when you right-click the image to get the image's address.

I originally wrote this post for ADVRider so some of what you do with the link in the forum is specific to a Xenforo based forum, but the important stuff is the Google part and you should be able to figure out what to do on the BARF side...

Here's the scoop on posting images from Google Photos...

First, the images need to be in an album that has been shared with the "Get Link" option. You will not use the generated link to embed photos as that is just a link to the album gallery, but if you do not do this share action then you end up with the situation where you can see your posted photos but no one else can. I have an album called "web" where I keep all my random publicly posted images.

While viewing the album, click on the picture that you want to embed in a forum post so that you are now viewing the single image. You have to be viewing the single image. If you try to copy the image URL from the album gallery it will not work. I'm going to use that first pic of the ass end of my 990 Adventure.

Right-click on the image and select "Copy Image Address" or whatever gets you the URL of the image. This is NOT the same as the URL in the address bar of your browser, so do not copy it from there.

This will yield a very long link with some important information at the end. It looks like this....

Code:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/A6i6yDw_7-QmzUpF1b6X1YsYDs7u1GR-pWDG8LfYApwXRh7jL1LmsPaoNS1PmfK70KGyIFlp_cg5RSvWfRA3XIyP2SS_ANkYmh7dFixA5PaJHVM0HIXmp0deweC32N8hhYdlMhF1WD__9Ob6tR1V1v0KC2hyTVfnAWpyrGsqFUy4vBqMYhSUSIewil7HQWccAFP_7UCS6-9n72XisOYJvFqOjIG3kKeg27ZZEJM8Iv8YZo8cJNM_bWiBBO_6Ex1_A4_az66bbBo6AulLeLa5PkJsEQjua3Osw5qOFMNBdSKRnAYHsnmCH9NkYXrfwyHb6UBLWf8XOC8KqxEgL2xaGRH_CR1scR-spjsrk8yuuONuv4bqfnypByF5jM9iRLzRLeQ1GBxH-ujZO3ctKhOjjIpx7C2mZ7jaTlK-YuXf_LroaChYAS9ZhHoxlxsWw6s5vE48OWO8G4Y3SUtAyMRpBwkU14PDiyK_YUUCCUNLYA_MfCzxPEbBQmrBeNXySG16G0s2wgD-VSkBmMJhfI_35d236fh4FGLmEqRi-fNVFFfbdR4YoLqNmriDJSJ6gPEeqG6GyX9psYYGH9SOqsazAFEPw0ZzghskBbyEocymPh3COufkRg=w603-h804-no

See the "=w603-h804" at the end of the URL? That represents the rendered size of the image (603px X 804px) and is going to be important in a minute. Note that the exact width specified in the copied URL is not the original size of the photo, but is directly a result of the size of your browser window when you copied the image address.

So now click the image button in the post editor and paste the URL into the dialog box...

Now what you do is edit the end of the URL so that the width is something appropriate for posting in a forum. I find that 800px or 1024px width works great. As you can see from the info in the "single image" view above the original is 1536px wide, so we will set it to 800px wide and remove the rest so the height can sort itself out proportionally.

1FA8iHnnN3mdhUkXudqCbjrbexUgFFBPz83--t1BUaKgt8M3UU0rjCCzCo3kgMaW7yfn_W47WiBaowAAh_qT96l9Jrm5wddiIGzOeot0UshNTHUUQXwTjAuA5950dRqfXXPvTJJPTxQ5GXXbdypSfskGt1l79IieZBFC-EbArmS8o0ZCcVyjBukKpkzoJk78_3yWE8KZJvG9y3C0gSeq52JSuJGG_gj9YdTghGB31ei_4nfesjz-CUddG5b-ju81KbZNBClcrtehWiNuPaVKw7yj2PQJJNUJDBGgzhT7XBaFLB_llsq5NHpG-9eBGZxvaYamjr15OiUl8T2gAYqosjP0US28fSUGl8W8u1n_fhzP5RG15V5BobwB6wdPiEl1ZtUG3AlscGXyAmWHBHT4kbPWy5AtZTVwU7ImrIAOGPNN3Uy-okUshJ6HkmTjIg1ZEgd1fZzyRfS-mSAm5PNptPFnxxvhIHk_q5s8zpQ7azzvt8goIwarpL2u4LV5AkXxtB4w_o2Bnb0dXKGSK8JcIFQHKAiHb9jR6VsCX4j2JlWvdkKwkahjPNWHhaAiuCPPxp2hJHs9tQnHNgJq1Twq903OUUhIWy5h1EFlNTbe50qfsV_CNA=w600

Now hit insert and the result will be the image sized to 800px wide.

Finally, you can verify that all is well by viewing your post in an "Incognito" browser window - aka porn mode. This will reveal if the album and its pictures are properly shared so others will see them.

Hope that helps folks. Once you get used to the process you get to where you can fairly quickly flip through a gallery and get all the photos inserted. yeah it's a bit of a pain with the forced "upgrade" from Picasa Web, but it's doable.

Testing SmugMug

They offer multiple sizes too.

Am I reading this wrong, or is using imgur for third party hosting illegal?

Basically, they don't want Amazon hosting their catalog images on their site.

As they said, it's basically their judgement. Essentially, it's a "if you use up too much of our site resources, we'll stop you" out clause.
