When should I apply for CHP?

At the CHP Academy? Hiring standards are lower, but I know for a fact 60's haven't been let in the gate.

:thumbdown

T-Score doesnt really mean much though. some of the guys in my class scored in the high 60's and failed out. i scored a 50 and graduated as my classes valedictorian. :laughing

70 was the lowest I've heard of, and that was on the oral.

Remember, everything is pass fail, except the oral. That's where the rankings are established.

When POST electronically scans your test answers, statistical calculations are performed to convert your raw score (the number of items you answered correctly) into a “T-score.” A T-score is a standardized score that places your performance on the test into a distribution (bell-shaped curve) with a midpoint (average) of 50 and a standard deviation of 10. If your score falls around 50, your performance is considered “average” when compared to other applicants who have taken the test. If you score 40 or below, your performance is considered “below average” when compared to other applicants who have taken the test. If you score 60 or above, your performance is considered “above average” when compared to other applicants who have taken the test. Research shows that the likelihood of successful academy completion increases for every point above 42 you score.

Right on I received a 57.4 for my t-score. I guess I am a little better than average :)

I took the PAT today. The letter I received in the mail said it could take up to 8 hours. I wondered how in the world 5 tests plus vision could take that long. From leaving my house at 11 today, and arriving home at 6, now I know.

I was going to say, one hundred or so people.:teeth

They had two sessions when I was there. In my session, there were 88 people more than in the first session. They said the total for the day was over 570.

Good luck.

What ever happended to AceofHearts? We got to watch his saga of trying to get hired unfold and when he did't get hired he sort of disappeared.

I took the QAP today. Now the waiting game.

Good Luck!!! I remember coming home every day and the first thing I did was run to the mailbox to check for that letter. It took about 3 weeks but it felt like months had passed by. Then theres the 6 month wait to hear from your BI, that felt like a year went by. lol
Now I'll see if im fortunate enough to continue on in the process.

Expect to wait a while before the background investigator starts your background if you pass your QAP. My friend's background investigator told him back in September that CHP is so back up with such a high volume of applicants that it will take at least a year and a half before he gets his name on the list for the invitation to the academy.

I'm aware of this. During the hiring process, the officers present repeatedly stated that the wait to get into the academy was between one and two years.

X2. I passed the QAP and waited ~7 months before my BI contacted me. Its been about another month since he initially contacted me. I am waiting to see what my next step is.

I received the letter in the mail today. I didn't pass the QAP, which I expected for a multitude of reasons (primarily being that my interview was horrible). My plan now is to finish college, try for Army OCS, get some life experience, then go for the CHP again in a few years.

Sorry to hear (read) that. You got the time, though. Good luck.

Thats horrible! Did you take the QAP prep course? That in itself was the best thing I could have done. Otherwise, I put about 4 hours of research in to finding out about the CHP.

I went to the QAP seminar they held in Sac on the campus if that's what you mean. TBH, I didn't prepare as well as I could of. I didn't do enough research into the day to day activities of the CHP thanks to taking on a massive workload of classes at school (5 upper division classes with a part time job is mildly challenging). I also didn't put much effort into selling myself, even though I have some fairly notable accomplishments.

I'm almost positive if I tried again in July, I'd make it all the way through. But then I'd be stuck waiting two years to get into the academy, again. Instead, I'll try to join the Army as an officer, gain some experience, and wait for California's economy to figure itself out. Once that happens, the CHP shouldn't have quite as long of a wait list, and I'll be better prepared to handle the challenges of the job.
