When should I apply for CHP?

Really? Then how does CHP rank applicants to decide who they are going to put through a background investigation? Are you saying everyone who passes the interview goes to backgrounds?

Every department is a bit different but I'd say 99% of the people who pass the physical/written/interview make it to the backgrounds. The only variation might be that those who do well on those preliminary tests go to backgrounds first. When looking at the big picture those 3 tests count for very little if at all towards your entire file which is put together during the background process.

Well, sure. If it's all pass/fail then the background is everything. In bad economies like this one, departments that are actually hiring are probably getting about 100 applicants for every vacant position. They often only select the top 10% from the oral boards or so to continue on to the background investigation.

Basically, yes. If positions are tight or if they want high quality applicants to be the only ones who make it to the academy, then they can use stricter scrutiny during the more subjective aspects of the testing.

(Probably. Makes sense to me.)

wow, some great misinformation out there.....

Interview is a pass or fail so it really doesn't matter any more or any less than the written.

I wouldnt exactly call the interview/QAP a pass or fail. You get scored on it. The CHP takes a certain score at certain times. Awhile back you had to score a 90% or better to move on to backgrounds. It was recently dropped to a 70%. A few guys in my test cycle had 70% on their interview scores right as the CHP changed it up to a 85%. So they ended not moving on in the process. At anytime the CHP can choose to raise or lower the scores they accept based on their needs.

Each phase I I guess would technically be pass/fail. You either pass or you fail, but there is a variance on scoring that they use. Im not sure if they actually internally track all your scores to get the best of the best, or whether they prioritize based on scores. Just do the best you can and give it 100%. That is all you can do.

How long have you been a background investigator/recruiter for the CHP?

I've never been a recruiter/BI which is why I said every department is a little different in the beginning of my sentence as a disclaimer.

Got my written test results back. I passed. I'm not sure what the total is, but it's obviously not out of 100 based upon my score and still having passed. I think I remember reading once that it was out of 70? Maybe 80...

The highest possible score is 78, but that is near perfect score.

The highest score is near-perfect? What happens is someone scores perfectly? :cool

Then they can't work for the CHP.

They become real cops and work for a city. :rofl :rofl

:thumbdown

T-Score doesnt really mean much though. some of the guys in my class scored in the high 60's and failed out. i scored a 50 and graduated as my classes valedictorian. :laughing

At the CHP Academy? Hiring standards are lower, but I know for a fact 60's haven't been let in the gate.

...because there's more than one test, and simply having the ability to pass a written exam hardly means you're adequately qualified to be an officer.
