Why European motorcycles are doing better then the Japanese

"soul"
LOL.

This conversation reminds me a little of the typical New VFR discussion.

"I want a 1000cc V5 with 190+ Hp and weighs less then 400lbs and also has comfortable pillion as my wife likes to go and make sure it has a 10 gallon gas tank and please give me ohlins and adjustable windshield and a chain no I mean a shaft drive and it had better be quality and feel like a Desmosedici because of the "racing heritage blah blah" and give me ten colors to choose from and and automatic dick warmer!! WTF??!! The goddamn Japs can't give it to me for 10 grand?!! Fuck them then!!! I'll show them!! I'll buy the $22,000 BMW that weighs 600lbs and has 135 hp brag about its the most powerful thing eva!! Then act smug about my "soulful" purchase.....

:laughing

you must have experience selling bmw motorcycles and cars...

Hm. I thought the "soul" thing was mostly a v-twin thing. Harleys, Ducatis, etc...

I don't love my Beemer because it has soul - it's just a really good bike that does what I want pretty much how I want. I dig it. Previous bikes - I'm thinking specifically of my VFRs and my Speed Triple - weren't quite it. The Beemer is - soul or not.

sorry to tell you mang, but the R1200R doesn't need a 'soul' cuz it is possessed...:devil

Haha! Well, I sure have a hell of a time riding it, and it sure looks nice. But while the VFRs had that lovely V4-ness, and my Speed Triple felt like a fire-breathing hellhound that absolutely drooled a particular type of loud, rambunctious "soul" the Beemer feels more like a really nice, well-made, precision tool. I suppose that's just a different type of soul and I positively love riding it... but I just think of it as a really good bike. Maybe I need to put a louder pipe on it.

One thing many BMW's have is superb fit and finish. Simply stunning compared to anything else. Makes me fall in love and whip out my check book every time. Luckily I rode them before signing the check!!! I can't remember feeling a more boring gutless engine than a bmw aircooled twin.

What the hell did you ride? I've ridden Boxers from many decades (seventies on) and never felt bored. Some of 'em weren't particularly speedy, but still interesting. My R1200R is a hell of a lot of fun to ride - that latest engine spins up nicely - really high fun factor in spite of having "only" ~110 HP.

I rode a few 1100's and two 1150's. Not a 1200 cuz it's not in my price range.
They reminded me of a stock excellent condition VW bug.
I reallllyyyyy wanted to look over the drive shafts exploding and get a naked 1150 or 1100s or 1200 cruiser but I just couldnt see the value.
If I were simply commuting 100 miles/day all freeway with no traffic Id get an RT no question. Awesome road holding. Feels like a caltrain going straight.

While it surely happens, I had three BMW's, each of which I rode for 50K miles or so, and it never happened to me. :dunno

I believe you. I see many of them on the freeway every day.:laughing
But I don't want to get a $6k bike that has a higher than acceptable chance of needing a $3k repair.
Same thought kept me from getting a few aircooled ducatis. Same reason I sold an FZ1 with a perfectly working second gear.

You're crazy. :laughing I mean, yeah - shafts fail sometimes. And they don't - a lot.

I rode a couple different R1100Ses at different points in my life. The first one, I think a '99, blew my mind. Really cool and balanced. The second one - just recently - was still awesome but didn't quite live up to my memory of the first one, so I bought an R1200R which has turned out to be pretty much the perfect bike for me. Also rode a couple different BMW ST bikes when I was looking for a good commuted, but ended up buying a VFR mostly because the Beemers on the market in my price range at that point just weren't very clean and I found a super clean VFR for a good price. But I still wouldn't have described any of those bikes as boring.
