Yay datacenters...driving up electricity costs

38 million views for a 2.5 minute sci-fi mockery made with Blender....yeah this guy's making bank, and thumbing his nose at traditional filmmakers

California community panics as $15 billion in data centers planned
But concerns over pollution and Colorado River water use have turned one of the projects into a charged legal fight, where a developer is accusing city officials in Imperial, California, of “economic sabotage” for circulating flyers about the development. Meanwhile, activists are warning that the projects are getting approved without protecting local residents.

Last year, developer CalEthos announced plans to turn 315 acres of farmland into a complex that could eventually be a $5.5 billion project, with the first phase including a 200,000-square-foot data center. A second company, Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing LLC, proposed a $10 billion, 950,000-square-foot data center close to the city of Imperial, located near the Mexican border, roughly 90 miles east of San Diego.
This facility would decimate the area and well beyond, these data centers require huge amounts of water which they'd take from the Colorado river which other states depend on too. It's a very stupid decision and will cause massive problems. But, they don't GAF, obviously.

Interesting note from me as I am involved in repositioning older building for use as Data Centers or potential AI labs. Both require huge power compared to normal industrial use so that means bringing in new power.

Guess what?? PG & E is running low... a couple were "We think we can deliver by 2028".

That is probably not throughout CA, but if the case in Silicon Valley then not good??

WTF?

By the time it gets there, it has hit the end of the road. San Diego area is the last stop for water from the river.

Data centers, water and power required.
Some are talking about enlarging the atomic plant they have in Az.
last nite something about portable nuclear power plants for each data center.
Maybe a portable nuclear water well too?

The solution is already there if you look hard enough:

Combined with this:

You can have a nice floating AI data center.... HELL make it underwater into a drone sub for safety / security. Hard to beat that!

As for the topic of LLM data centers, we are in a self driven tech bubble where the chips [see what I did there?] are all in on the LLM's (think your retirement portfolio is looking so spiffy because of its Nvidia stock maybe?). So the companies are forced to play keep up. The Bank and VC and Funds are all in on this too... If / When it all comes crashing down its will wipe many peoples savings probably much worse then 2008.

Dont worry the future is coming, resistance is futile....

Start spinning for those credits now....

A data center is going to be built closer to my neighborhood than I care for. I'm installing house batteries because despite assurances, there will be blackouts in the summer.

IMHO, The technology needs to be treated like a WMD. I don’t think it should be a commercial product in any way.

Quitting is easy and selfish, perhaps those in charge did not want to listen to him, but if he really believes we are on track for the demise of civilizations because of the current path. Quitting and living in a shack is revealing to say the least.

If you think its a WMD perhaps the previous inventors of WMD and what they did in life after their creations will be of interest to you:

One could perceive our current stance on export of this technology as nuclear arms race 2.0 maybe then.

I hope the system you selected has an option for solar or generator input so when grid power skyrockets you have other options.
(what battery did you choose?)

I'm in the middle of building out 150MW of AI clusters and datacenters to house them. I'm sorry.

Who the fuck is asking for this?
I'm sorry. I have 30MW in Santa Clara and I'm bidding on more.

Just out of curiosity who the fuck cares where you are placing the cluster as long as there is some fiber running to it anyways?
Why not build somewhere electricity is MUCH cheaper then here? (also no earthquakes)....

Because it's not available until 2028. We are, but the demand is today, and won't wait for the buildings to be built (longest lead times are six to nine months for gensets, UPSes, chillers, CRAHs, CDUs, etc. The walls and floor are easy.) I'm expanding every facility I'm in today and acquiring new capacity in the dozens of MW per tranche.

You'd prefer launching precious metals into orbit and having space AI like Mr Musk is planning?
I not in favor of that either. Kessler will be the limit there. Its a false choice between AI data centers on earth vs in space. We simply don’t not need ubiquitous AI. We definitely don’t need it as a commercial venture with zero plan on how to manage the social fallout. Believe me, I would love to be wrong about AI being a WMD. I don’t think I am though.
