id be willing to bet every single chippy has wanted to do that at least once, but 99.99% of us have enough sense to not freaking do it.
 
Luckily we get along with our fire guys, but I'd move a truck myself before it came to that
 
every so often something like this happens, i do not get it? the fire truck is there to SAVE lives. the truck is a wall to be hit so humans do not get hit.

why would a leo not understand this?
the fwys are a very dangeres place to work, many emg workers/equipment are hit by passing cages each year.

There was a BC that had a similar issue in Orange county a while back. I almost got arrested by NHP over an incident similar to this. To me, scene safety is a top priority when you play on the freeway. I've had too many close calls.

When push came to shove, I told the Trooper- either deal with how my guy spotted the rig or call a Supervisor. He says my boss doesn't need to be here! I said he sure does when I make a private party arrest for interfering fire/ems doing their duty... (NRS has a similar section to 148 PC)

Nothing is more fun than dealing with a TC in a 75MPH and have to be 1 foot from big rigs at that speed and greater. :|

Edit: BTW IT's not an "isolated incident".

Handcuffing an on duty fireman. The very same guys that will roll to save you when some DUI plows into you on a car stop. Yeah, that's real bright...
 
I can guarantee this is not some new development for them, I bet things have been brewing for a long time and finally came to a boiling point. We're talking about guys that block three out of four lanes in commute traffic for a crash that's taking the shoulder and half a lane, that shit won't fly. Blocking our work lane when traffic is flowing is totally fine by me.

Not saying I'd ever arrest one for it, especially in front of a news camera, that's crazy talk
 
Apparently they parked the fire truck on the northbound side of the freeway blocking the fast lane. They hopped over the center divider for a crash on the southbound side. CHP told them to move it and he said no just arrest me then and turned around and put his wrists together so the Chippie hooked him up.

So. When working on a patient, let them handle that first. As soon as the patient is gone, then do whatever you need to with the FD. Wouldn't you want it that way if they were working on you? Traffic be damned?

There are apparently a lot of moving parts to this story. I have no idea why either party did what they did.
 
There is no defending this. Hooking up a firefighter at the scene of an injury accident is just idiocy. So traffic flow is impeded-big fucking deal. Throw out some flares while the FD tends to the injured. I'm sure the Chula Vista FD will be sure to take the time to properly park their rigs when a CHP officer from that office is involved.
 
Agreed. Cuffing the guy was too much. Once the patient is loaded, there are plenty of channels to go through to work out the issues of where to park.

Clearly there is some history between the FD and CHP in that area since somewhere it mentioned there was a history of "threats of arrest" or something similar. Sounds like they need to have some sort of meeting to get everyone back on the same team.

In both counties I've worked in (Monterey and San Mateo) we've always had great relations with law enforcement and all agencies are out there to watch each other's back and make sure everyone gets home safe. Hell, sometimes on 101 in Prunedale CHP would shut down all lanes in one direction even if not absolutely necessary simply because the drivers were such asshats down there that we were all worried about getting hit.

A California cop is under investigation after he was allegedly caught in a local news video handcuffing an on-duty firefighter who was helping car accident victims.

CBS 8 reports that the incident occurred when Chula Vista Fire Department Engineer Jacob Gregoire, 36, refused to move his engine from the fast-lane on I-805 between Telegraph Canyon Road and East Orange Avenue.

The station's camera appears to show an unnamed California Highway Patrol officer handcuffing Gregoire. He then detained Gregoire, a 12-year firefighting veteran, in the back of his police car while other firefighters continued to tend to accident victims.

Fire Chief Dave Hanneman told the San Diego Union Tribune that Gregoire was operating under standard procedure.

“I know clearing the freeway is a priority for the CHP,” Hanneman said. “Our No. 1 priority is the safety of our firefighters and patients.”

Watched the video; seems there was no reason to block the fast lane.
 
what a dick chip, the guys is there is save lives and assist with reopening the roads. If the FD didnt remove the crash victim the road would be blocked until the chip did so. I dont understand this and the officer should be put on leave. If you interfere with a police investigation you get arrested, how about if the chip'r is interfering with the FD role to protect and serve?

I like your posts always, but you seem to be contradicting your post from last night.
 
I've run a lot of freeway and street calls. The truck is there to protect us and even if the truck was parked on the other side of the freeway, getting to the patient quickly is what is important. Driving up to the next exit and then weaving through traffic with your lights/sirens is wasting time. Never had any problems with CHP or local PD understanding this and everyone working together. Agree it sounds like something more was going on. Regardless, unacceptable for CHP to arrest the first responder. If you have a problem, take it up the chain. We are all on the same team in this situation.
