2009 Ducati 1198- yay or nay?

Hey guys… don’t mean to resurrect an old thread but just wanted to add one more point- I’ve owned my R1 for roughly a year & a half and it already has 24K miles on it. So I'm looking at it from the point of view of reducing wear & tear on my beloved R1 (she's already considered high mileage by motorcycle standards).

I know...i know... it sounds like I'm just trying to justify an unnecessary purchase. :twofinger

Yeah that makes sense. I know a guy who was worried he'd hurt the resale value of his Accord, so now he commutes in a Lotus.

pls don't compare my 0-60 in under 3 second, sex-bomb of a motorcycle to a lowly accord.

if you have to ask...

you must not want it badly enough or you aren't an italian fan or you aren't a ducatisto

If you've ridden the thing and still feel love for your R1, you aren't in love with that red thing. All that aside, you'd be gettin something with a good resale value.

can I ask what is it exactly that you feel the R1 has over the 1198?? comfort is not really a viable factor if you're talkin bikes, please. Riding with a back protector, leathers and good boots is uncomfortable but you get used to it. Personally I can't imagine anyone in a quandary over the 2 bikes so it sounds like you might be unhappy with it

Wish you the best in your decision. Remember there is always another sexy thing around the corner. You know the old song "i believe in miracles, whe're you from, you sexy thing"

oh and those 2 pics of the women, :rofl

I found a semi-decent deal on a 0 mile 2009, 1198; I already own a liter bike but I'm trying to justify buying another one. Can you guys help me build up a list of pros & cons?

Here are mine so far-

Pros:

*Sexy looking
*Sounds amazing
*$15K otd (not the deal of the century for an 09' but not bad for 0 miles)
*Low end torque that'd put my R1 to shame
*Never owned a V-twin
*Since I stack up around 15-20K miles/year, I can reduce miles on my beloved R1

Cons:

*Ducati's reputation for poor reliability
*Cost of ownership- expensive regular maintenance costs
*Already own a respectably fast & sexy liter bike (i.e. $15K I don't need to spend)
*Increased insurance costs
*The most uncomfortable motorcycle I have ever ridden (literally feels like a 300 pound dude has his foot on your nuts during the entire ride)
*Poor fuel tank range/mpg (based on reviews)

6 pros & 6 cons... I'm right down the middle- I need your help in making a decision on this!
I love my 1198! I come from a series of R6's & R1's and it's def. less comfy but man, that torque makes it go away in the blink of en eye!!

To address your Cons:
- Ducati has come a long way in terms of reliability. Not like Japanese bikes but besides one recall issue, I'm trouble free so far
- Not really much more expensive...
- Sell the old bike, you won't regret switching to an 1198
- Why increased insurance costs?
- Fuel range is "decent" but then again, just stop to top off whenever you can :)

I have to agree with Chris, I also came from Yamaha's and they seem to be as comfy as a lazy boy. The Ducati, however, lacks in that area but really makes up in the torque plus this machine is pure sex. There are a lot of mods you can do to make the ride a bit more comfortable, some that are free, just costs your time.

Your cons require a bit more research, you'll find that they aren't so.

The bike new, has a 2 year warranty.

Ducati addressed the cost of ownership issues from earlier models. http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do

I insure through State Farm and it costs me a few dollars more that the R1.

You will adjust to the lower fuel range, if not, get the aluminum Corse tank :). http://www.store.commoto.com/ducati...ucati84810981198aluminumfueltank-p-99573.html

The engine is an L-Twin BTW.

..................................................................................

The Cons IMHO (all have fixes):

Gets pretty damn hot.

No hugger from factory.

The mirrors are useless, even with the oem mirror extenders.

Fairing stay is very brittle (magnesium).

Clutch lever is a bit hard to pull.

Gearing is too tall.

the 848 and 1198 are about the most sorted fueling systems/efi on a bike that i've ever owned throughout the entire rpm range. the only bit of weirdness is if you don't drop one tooth up front. starting from a stop is not quite as smooth but it has nothing to do with fueling.
If you can, drive it first. Ducs arent known for smooth fuel mapping. The engines cantankerous below 4,000 rpm. After that, hang on. They are made to haul the mail, not to give enjoyment riding to starbucks

I ended up buying the Ducati earlier this weekend - absolutely LOVE it so far! No regrets & totally worth it!!
