2009 Ducati 1198- yay or nay?

Buy the Duc and flog the piss out of it. And if you get bored with it, you can count on the resale being pretty good.

dude... if you like the ducati get it. i've never considered myself a "ducati person" and i don't really love starbucks, but that bike is fucking awesome.

i've had so many bikes, but my 1098 rides like none other. the motor has so much torque, the bike handles great, it's sexy as fuck, and most importantly, it's simply a blast to ride. and as far as reliability goes, ducati of today is not the same as 5 years ago. they don't fall apart.

anyone who hates on ducati's because they're ducati's is a kook. if you like the bike get one. you can test ride it if you want but that's only gonna speed up the purchase. just do it and don't look back. i guarantee the lack of buyer's remorse.

finally, let's not forget :twofinger

I've seen that pic before ...but damn...never gets old.

Man... I should've created a poll...based on responses, it appears to be 50/50 for & against purchase.

I swear Bayliss wears guy-liner..

I LOVE that picture ... but I can't look at it because it's all I see. There's some serious mascara action going on.:shocker

Back to the original topic, buy it already.

I was forced to test ride an 1198 last summer (was going for SF), got on it saying it was crap, that sportbikes are useless blabber blabber.
When I got off it, I had to buy one. By the fall, the Z1000 was sold and 1098 purchased.

Can't say much on it though, managed to squeeze in 100mi before winter. BTW, winter here = bike in the living room. We're about to get 12" of snow tomorrow. :wtf

Not gonna lie, I bought it because of the looks #1. Every time I looked at something else, it came back to "but the 1x98 looks so damn good". Engine close #2 ... coming from a 4 banger, I wanted the kick of a twin ... when I first opened up the 1198 I was blown away. Taught chassis was #3. I could afford it, and regarding comfort, I'll just clear the sand out of my vagina. Which eventually is going to be very accurate since the seat and tank do rip my gentleman's area apart. Damn thing. :rofl
On that last point, the Streetfighter is a no-complaint, in comparison.

Bottom line, if you're asking, it's because you want it. Get it. There's a weird satisfaction in owning something that's so highly regarded by so many people, wether it's right or wrong.

And yeah 15k seems a bit steep, even for a 0 mile bike.

Oh yeah, did I mention it fits nicely in a living room for those of us with winter?

That is awesome! Then again if I had a Duc like that I'd probably keep it inside all winter too.

I think OP should buy it. Or a 2011 model. Hell, I'm starting to look at the 848 and 1198 now lol

good friend has a 2009 1198S. it's his daily commuter - almost 80 miles round trip. prior to getting it, he put almost 70,000 miles on a 999 (that love affair ended in a cartwheel down the freeway). he LOVES the 1198. he thrashes it, and it's been a workhorse so far.

hell i think if you can afford it, do it...i mean why not right?? cause to me it seems like you have some money trying to burn a hole in your pocket, so whats better than a high horsepower, low weight machine, that every time you twist the throttle it puts a smile on your face...ive always felt that the philosophy that no matter whats makes you happy, as long as you can afford it, do it..maybe thats why im broke???(but i had a great time getting to this point!!!)

Don't worry about the maintenance costs or reliability. I've got 36K on my 749 daily driver and it's just fine. Ride it like it's meant to be ridden and it'll be good for years.

If you consider yourself a die-hard motorcyclist, then you should probably experience ownership of something exotic. Or kick yourself and wonder what if. Your choice.

Definitely something exotic. Unfortunately, that isn't really an 1198. At this point, I see more of them than gixxers.

You must live in a nice neighborhood, given Gixxers outsell Ducati superbikes about 15 to 1 in the U.S.

wow. that's some hyperbole!

Most of the bikes I see are just before or after going up Old Tunnel, so, Nice neighborhood? I guess so but it is still Oakland.

Gixxers may outsell Ducatis in the rest of the country but I think you'd find different numbers in the Bay Area.

Down in Phoenix, I saw two 1098s in 5 years but gixxers were everywhere. Out here, it is a totally different story. Just like people in the Bay Area are vain enough that they spend more time in the gym than anywhere in the country, they also like to show off how sophisticated they are.

Honestly, why not buy a streetfighter instead? I've ridden the 848 and the SF and the SF is just a better streetbike. Plus you can get them used for a much better deal than that.

The biggest reason not to buy the bike you're considering is that the price sucks. Either spend the extra and get the one with TC and stuff or pass and buy a motard or something.
