2009 Ducati 1198- yay or nay?

Just like people in the Bay Area are vain enough that they spend more time in the gym than anywhere in the country, they also like to show off how sophisticated they are.

:laughing

Yeh, go to the gym then hire a gardner because it's too much work

No, it's really not.

Have you owned both? I have. (slightly diff years)

For all purposes the OP is using it for, it is the same bike. Supersport liter bike... Yes the torque band is different, but all the differences only come out on the track.

If you want the duc, get it. I did. But then sell your R1, and get something far different. How about a street tard, or something?

How about keep your R1 and get a duc streetfighter?

Brad

Well if you're asking if I've owned a late model Jap literbike and a Ducati superbike, then yes, I have. And other than the fact that their both sportbikes, I found them vastly different in character and riding experience.

Most of the bikes I see are just before or after going up Old Tunnel, so, Nice neighborhood? I guess so but it is still Oakland.

Gixxers may outsell Ducatis in the rest of the country but I think you'd find different numbers in the Bay Area.

Down in Phoenix, I saw two 1098s in 5 years but gixxers were everywhere. Out here, it is a totally different story. Just like people in the Bay Area are vain enough that they spend more time in the gym than anywhere in the country, they also like to show off how sophisticated they are.

Witty, but Gixxers outsell Ducati superbikes by a landslide, even in Kalifornia.

Got any numbers to support that claim?

The point I am making though is that the 1098/1198 are far from rare in this area and can be seen daily. That hardly makes them exotic.

But it says DUCATI on the tank. IT MUST BE EXOTIC.

Call me when someone gets a Vincent out there or something.

I'll also accept AMF era Harleys.

Neither manufacturer publishes that level of detail. I'm basing it on the fact that Suzuki's market share is 13 times Ducati's in the US, the GSXR is Suzuki's best selling streetbike (if you believe Twist the Throttle) and Ducati sells more standards than Superbikes. That and the fact that there are far fewer Ducati dealers in California and they each get a relatively small allotment of 1198s, while there is no shortage of Suzuki dealers and Gixxers.

Maybe the reason you notice them is because they're so damn sexy and you secretly dig em. :teeth

That said, I don't think there is anything 'exotic' about any of the current Ducs.

A Ferrari is exotic. An 1198 can be financed by someone working the fryer at McDonalds.

I think the perception of gixxers selling so much is based on their dominance of a few years ago but remember they actually took a year off from the US market. Meanwhile Ducati's sales are way up - particularly in the Bay Area.

I don't think it is that unreasonable to assume that the majority of "per capita" sales of gixxers happen outside of the Bay Area while the vast majority of Ducatis are sold in LA and the Bay Area.

Regardless, as you point out, exotic isn't really the right characterization.

This :thumbup

IMHO all the endless debates about which bike is more "exotic" is like something from "Lord of the Flies" :teeth

A couple of yesra ago I did a back to back comparison of a bunch of bikes including my R1 and 1198 and yes they are different but if you then compare them to a bike from a different genre like Street Tripple R, Monster etc., you quickly get to point that an R1 and an 1198 are more similar than you would think.

Which gets back to a point that keeps being made but ignored. If you are going to have 2 bikes having an R1 and and 1198 is kind of pointless. :thumbdown

shouldn't you lose the right to say shit like this when you have an open thread where you talk about a Triumph being too expensive?

I don't think it's the same thing or contradictory. The Ducati is too expensive. However, you don't have to be rich to buy one. It's like a Coach purse: yeah, it is seriously overpriced but you'll still see real ones in the ghetto.

I remember running into a local riding a 916.....He was wearing overalls and the chain was just about rusted solid, among other things....:cry
He must of had only one good crop....a few years ago.:rofl

:rolleyes

You can't even read a simple thread correctly before whining about it. Don't you have anything better to do?

how much pot do you smoke? you really think that there are more ducati's here in the bay area than gixxers? you really see more of them? no fucking way.

if that really is your perception then i think that you owe it to yourself to buy one, as you are clearly obsessed. it's like having a girl break up with you and every song you hear reminds you of her. this is the bike for you.

the rats would love it.

You didn't actually read the post you quoted.

well, there was this one

Definitely something exotic. Unfortunately, that isn't really an 1198. At this point, I see more of them than gixxers.

eh... doesn't matter. if the dude wants the ducati he should get it.

imo, any of the ducati, excluding the 750 paso, remains iconic for it's era and can be appreciated in the future even if several years old...

can't really say that about many japanese motorcycles...

"it was a good bike back then..."

"wow...thought those things would be crashed by now..."

I agree about past Ducatis, some of them, many of them, are rare and beautiful as well as exotic. I'm just not sure the modern ones will stand out in the same way. The world and the market has changed but I don't think that perception has kept up.
