2019 Honda Super Cub

The original Honda Cub is a legendary motorcycle. It came along in the early sixties when there was nothing else like it and made motorcycling acceptable to a skeptical American public, used to Harleys and British motorcycles.

Honda was brilliant in marketing this to the masses and it was very successful (You meet the nicest people on a Honda).

It was the basic means of transportation in Japan in the early sixties. Easily affordable, simple, reliable, step-through design making it very comfortable for women riders, it took the public by storm. The early models were kick start but quickly, they added an electric start version.

Families would have one for their basic transportation. Papa-san driving with a youngster on his lap, mama-san on the back with a baby or two. I would see this combo all over the small villiages we visited while touring the countryside.

That's cool! I saw the listing for that exact one, I came real close to buying it. It's nice reading your views on it, I waffle between a Super Cub, and a Trail 125. Of course, the Trail is unobtainium right now. :(

Yeah I looked into the Trail 125 but I have never laid eyes on one. I saw a couple Super Cubs at Clawson Motorsports in Fresno not long ago but not a single CT125. You're more likely to find a vintage one than the new one o_O'

The few times I've gone out Doordashing with it I've gotten a few compliments about it. It's definitely a nostalgia bike. I think I have only seen one C125 on the road once around town. But yeah there are millions of Cubs all around the world.
 
Wow you got a deal, or rather the seller lost a bunch haha After my purchase I swore off ever buying anything new from the dealer ship .. 500 destination charge ... assembly fee .... tire fee on and on. Glad to see your enjoying it though, I put about 2,300 miles on mine in the first 6-8 months, but now its sitting in my basement on the east coast, until I get it back to san jose in a few weeks :)

Typical Honda new release : New model releases, a few dealerships in each state get one at a time, then no more for at least a year. I saw on a thread elsewhere, that some people put down deposits for the Trail in September of last year, and are still waiting. :thumbdown

I watched your videos, and in regards to shifting, it definitely take some getting used to. From what I've read, when downshifting, you want to do that at very low revs, way lower than you would on a normal moto, and blip the throttle as you release the lever. Supposedly the shift down into first is to be done just before you're stopped. Also, the air filter is not behind that little chrome cover. The airbox and filter is on the front of the moto, behind the forks and fender.

Oh, and there's a blue one for sale! The seller only wants $7100 for it! :rofl
 
Yeah I saw that blue one, even thought I wanted the blue one I didn't want to pay that price.

From riding it the last week I've figured out the shifting it's like you have to blip the throttle like you were double clutching but without the clutch. But yeah that difference between 1st and 2nd is a lot so you'll either have to rev it a lot and brake at the same time or like you mention change gears when you get to a really low speed.

Honestly I'd rather just have a clutch but hey I wanted a bike that was good stoplight to stoplight and this'll work.

So I got a question if I'm idling like waiting at a stoplight for a while should I throw it in neutral or is it ok to leave it in 1st? If I leave it in gear wouldn't that be like holding the clutch in on a normal bike which would wear the bearing out faster?

I don't think it matters. When stopped, the clutch is disengaged anyways, until you give it throttle.

The alarm on those are hilarious! They're so polite sounding, not even slightly offensive in tone or loudness. It's as if the bike is politely, quietly saying "Sir, please do not steal me". :laughing
 
Yeah, automatic clutches (at least the old centrifugal clutches) do not have throw-out bearings like traditional clutches do. The clutch engages based on spinning speed so no worries in leaving it in first (unless the idle speed is too high, which it won't be with EFI).

Haha I did find out during a delivery that if you leave it in gear and put it on the centerstand the wheel will spin
 
Hades, how tall are you, and how well do you fit on it? I saw one video where a 5ft-9" dude was reviewing it, and he looked borderline scrunched up on it. Makes me think at 6ft, I've got no chance of fitting on one of these little buggers, but it really comes down to the ergos on it.
 
I'm 5'10" 180lbs and yes it feels small for me. There is like no wind protection on my torso. I'm used to riding mini bikes though sort of I would say I'm a tad too big for it so I pay for it in ergonomics. I did notice my shoulders hurting a bit after riding it for extended periods. I think I'm too scrunched up on it. Even though it is a motorcycle it feels like you are riding a scooter.

Also since the handlebar is kinda low it's hard for me to twist the throttle all the way my wrist hurts after a bit. I installed a throttle rocker and tightened up the throttle cable hopefully that'll shorten the sweep enough for me not to get wrist cramps.
 
Dang it, guess I can cross the Cub off my list then, no way will I fit on one.

If the throttle locker doesn't work out, I'll bet a quarter turn throttle for a Grom would do the trick.
 
I know G2 makes a quickturn throttle it's $80 though. Hopefully tightening up the throttle and the throttle rocker helps.

One thing you could do is try to rent one if you can find one for rent anyway and try it out for a day. But I haven't seen any cubs on twisted road or riders share.

I kinda wish I had gotten the Trail or Hunter Cub. It's like a naked Super Cub. I'm not a big fan of all the plastic on the Super Cub. It makes working with the bike annoying. I wish they had included a digital speedometer also like the Trail but I can appreciate the gear indicator it's definitely nice have.

I the G2 one on my Grom (I think its the same motor) and it definitely helps.

Also, these motors are super easy to work on and crazy reliable. Highly suggest you get a BBK. I put 143cc Takegawa on my Grom but honestly, it's not really enough. I am ~190lb 6'2" and I can cruise at 65mph on the freeway when flat. If I were to do it again I'd go with 160cc+ so I can get a bit more speed + better acceleration uphill.

I almost bought the G2 throttle but I'm trying a throttle rocker and I tightened up the slack in the cable. There must have been like 5mm of freeplay. Much better now, will see if I still get wrist cramps.

Oh wow I've done a couple freeway runs and it's not fun on the Super Cub if there is a lot of wind or a hill it will slow down to about 50mph. Tops is around 63mph. I'm 5'10" 180lbs. Haha I'm trying to keep this one stock but it could use more guts. I heard if I don't modify it will last a long time.
 
I can't believe the 8 speed dual range feature was dropped.
Without, this bike has lost serious trail chops. Back to 80 tooth rear sprocket for climbing.

Interesting it's got to have more power than the older bike though right? Would it make up for not having a low range? Would be interesting to ride both.
 
Hades, why not the Honda ADV150? 294 lbs too much for the purpose?
 
I think the ADV150 is pretty nice I haven't even seen one in person though. The Super Cub is still a motorcycle is one reason I like it. I like the trail but couldn't find one. The smart key on the supercub is really nice for doing deliveries though I'm really enjoying it.
