Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

After a long weekend for the 4th (we got Tuesday off as well) I'll be working (trying to anyway) for two days and heading out Friday to ride the Wyoming BDR with a few friends. I spent yesterday doing a first pass at packing. Travelling as light as possible with lodging versus camping each night, I'm getting excited so far things have packed down ok and shoudl be relatively light.

The stuff

Dog wanted to come but I told him this is no country for old men, also he hates my driving:

^^cool bike packing prep pics, and super-cute pup! :thumbup

I usually only announce these things in our bitchin' BARF Political Discussions subforum, but @kalle has a reservation at the Rob Hill Campground in the Presidio in San Francisco, TONIGHT--here's a pic from a month ago:

hope to be making an appearance, myself, tonight, in time for the sunset (8:27 pm) at the Immigrant Point Overlook, and then hang out around the campfire for a bit.

anyone reading this is personally invited, and would be made welcome ... :ride

I bet this was a good time, have only been back from a 14 day trip since this past Tues this was a weekend to stay home with the S/O since I am off to Colorado (no moto, sadly) on Friday to hang with my folks.

Los Padres Natl Forest off Tassajara Road overnight

Recently received the cool Mosko R40 luggage so I had to bug out and try it out. I didn't leave my house until 1pm Saturday and slabbed down Hwy 1 to Carmel by the Sea.. Easy ride on the 300 Rally

I stayed at the White Oaks Campground, but recommend going two more miles and staying at the China Camp Campground or finding a wild spot. There were also a lot of Hunters up there camped at all the pullouts.

Chachagua road on my way out

Whit Oak is a small six space CG and not that great. I traded a bigger site for a smaller site at the request of some traveling Hungarians. They fed me some homemade veggie sushi rolls.. nom, nom..

I went off to find the Chews Ridge Fire Lookout but it was gated. In hind site I should have checked to see if it was locked. So I just rode down Tassajara for a while and enjoyed the scenery.

The bugs up here are brutal. All sizes and type of winged creatures. It's similar to Prewitt Ridge in this way. I brought my head net

The luggage is sweet, and worked out really nice. Hauled all my crap.

One the way out I stopped at the Motorcycle Museum in Carmel, but they were closed.

I slabbed Hwy 1 back to Davenport and had fish and chips and swung back and took Empire Grade, and China Grade to Big Basin Road. China Grade has had some repairs and is in great shape, and it's OPEN! It was closed for a while due to the Big Basin fire.

cool pic, wow! :thumbup

just spent an hour checking out the Chews Ridge Fire Lookout, which I'd never heard of, and checking out the Oliver Observing station on Chews Ridge, and wondering if I need to join "friends of MIRA.org" in order to attend some of their upcoming astronomy events ... lots going on behind that gate. :laughing:ride

CHEWS RIDGE OBSERVATORY webcam

I don't get down that way often enough, thanks for the ride report ... :afm199

Fire Lookouts on the Lost Sierra Route

“A Collection of fire lookouts found along the Lost Sierra Route on Lassen, Plumas, and Tahoe National Forests.”

lists like 21 different watchtowers, and I’d never heard of most of them … :ride:party

The Lost Sierra seems like a fun area to ride if one had a few weeks to spend out there.

I'd never heard of the "Lost Sierra," it's apparently a thing:

The project is known as Connected Communities and is a joint partnership between the nonprofit organization Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, and the US Forest Service and community partners.

The aim is to revitalize the Sierra Buttes—an alpine region of towns and mountain peaks where the Sierra Nevada meets the Cascades (known as "the Lost Sierra")—through recreation-based industry.

The first phase is expected to launch in 2023 with 20 miles of single-track multiuse trails that will connect the mountain towns of Quincy and Taylorsville with views of the mountain ranges and down into the Indian Valley.

The long-term plan is to gradually connect a total of 15 towns in Northern California and a slice of Nevada over the next seven years through 600 miles of trails; giving intrepid adventurers plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, moto-riding, horse-riding, fishing, wildlife watching and sightseeing.

"moto-riding," fiw! :laughing

that watchtower web page is certainly fancy ...

Looks like a good addition to the ADV market albeit a little pricey. Love the spoke location at the rim for tubeless, wonder if they have a tendency to rub in deeper ruts.

Will remain to be seen if a Ducati motor can achieve low maintenance longevity, not really their thing...

What's the displacement, 900?

reading it’s the liquid-cooled, 937 cc engine that’s in the Monster, Hypermotard, Multistrada V2 and Supersport … 110 hp with 18k mile valve adjustment. 21”/18” wheels.

love the old school white/red paint and the headlight. it’s very seldom I feel the need to cross a street to look at a parked bike. :laughing

I don't know the price, but if it comes in around $20k it will be among the cheaper Euro adv bikes.

And the rims? BMW has been running those for years. They may take a scratch from an errant rock or a tire iron, but its nothing to worry about. Adv bikes are for Adv

I kind of want the Desert X, but I have a hard enough time wrangling my DRZ when things get tough, also, I'd actually feel bad when I dropped the X and I don't feel at all bad when I drop the DRZ. I'm sure it'd be more enjoyable riding to and from the dirty bits. I've got 30,000 on the predecessor to that motor with my Hypermotard and while it has had some sensor quirks, it's never left me stranded so long as I don't run out of gas.

pretty sure you can find a bigger aftermarket tank than the one you have now for your DR-Z ... :laughing:angel

did you get rid of the mystery Suzuki engine noise?

My buddy got a big ol' safari tank for his WR, no thanks, 4 gallons is enough and I can carry another 35 - 40 miles of range via my fuel canisters.

It's still there, not getting any louder so, I dunno, maybe it's always been there and I've just keyed in on it. I did about 800 miles today this weekend and that plus the heat didn't kill it. I'm going to try a manual cam chain tensioner as some folks say the automatic one puts too much pressure on the chain. I should probably get a stethoscope to have a listen as I suppose the sound could be the water pump impeller or something :dunno

BARF Adventure Riders, Mr Kalle and Mr Bananachunks, are down in the Tumey Hills BLM this morning, and Mr Kalle texted me this pic of the tule fog over the Central Valley with Panoche Hills BLM on the horizon to the north … :ride
