Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

Bad ass all around.

:thumbup

his catch phrase is “I like wind!” maybe he’ll give us a review of his latest moto-tent. :gsxrgrl

he loaned me his Big Agnes Copper Spur 3 Expedition HV3 for this trip, which I had set up with six 90 penny nails and a big rock in a green recycle grocery bag inside the tent at each corner.

anyway, maybe it was a good year, I didn’t hear about anyone’s tent getting blown away. :ride

here’s some gratuitous alpine glow on Telescope Peak from PSR on Friday night:

Unfortunately there was NO WIND to test out my new desert shelter *sads*, but I had a blast nonetheless. I missed out on camping this past weekend, but I was able to get a few new bits on my klr. A work in progress, obviously.

And I guess I need to do Telescope Peak one more time to try and find that store as well!!

I sneezed looking at those photos. Might be heading to see the bloom this Sunday / Monday

the research is in! :afm199:laughing

Why we should all be gazing at more sunrises and sunsets
“People find sunrises and sunsets to be the most beautiful and awe-inspiring weather, research shows. Here are tips on how to see them.”
WaPo.com, by Kasha Patel. April 13, 2023

tl/dr/paywall:
Now research tells us: Sunrises are among the most beautiful fleeting weather phenomenon in a day.

People find sunrises and sunsets to be the most beautiful and awe-inspiring weather, according to a study published this year from a pair of British researchers.

People liked them more than storms, rainbows, clear blue skies or nightscapes — and some would even be willing to pay up to 100 British pounds to see landscapes at dawn or dusk.

“We have, as Western populations, become very disconnected from the natural world,” said Smalley, a doctoral candidate at the University of Exeter in England. “When you see something vast and overwhelming or something that produces this feeling of awe, your own problems can feel diminished and so you don’t worry so much about them.”

Beyond blue-sky thinking: Diurnal patterns and ephemeral meteorological phenomena impact appraisals of beauty, awe, and value in urban and natural landscapes
Journal of Environmental Psychology, by Alexander J. Smalley and Mathew P. White, March, 2023

Abstract

Landscape views can be dynamic; many of the elements within an environmental vista may change from one moment to the next.

Features such as a vibrant sunrise or sudden storm are often brief and unexpected, they are ephemeral, and might significantly alter the way an environment is perceived and experienced.

Yet existing research has tended to focus on appraisals of urban and rural scenes under uniformly clement, ‘blue-sky’ conditions, with few studies considering how diurnal rhythms and fleeting meteorological processes might impact landscape appraisals.

We assessed ratings of beauty, awe, and willingness-to-pay to visit in each condition … Sunrise and sunset were the most valued conditions within both the urban and natural environments, outcomes that were partially mediated through increased ratings of beauty and awe.

Natural environments are particularly good at facilitating awe-inspiring experiences which are often triggered by epic and overwhelming scenes, and marked by increases in amazement, wonder, and joy.

Awe is increasingly considered an important affective response to place-based experiences, with these encounters demonstrating the potential to improve mood, enhance prosocial behavior, and increase positive emotions.

as a KLR guy, I got a chuckle out of “willingness to pay.” where’s my milk crate? :facepalm

On that note, I might have a way to get my DRZ to morro bay for some Saturday dirt if there are dirty dual sport rides happening.

got up to Chews Ridge, at the top of Tassajara Road, finally. the gate to the watchtower was locked, so I camped down by that, and made the short walk up:

no snow, at 5000’ … :party

Williams Hill BLM is down there in the pic, below the clouds at 2000’

Nice one John! I tried to find the road to the tower last year but couldn't seem to find it. I ended up in one of the campgrounds.

it’s behind a gate at the top of Tassajara Road, on the lhs as you head up. the MIRA’s Oliver Observing Station observatory is behind the same gate. I have a vague plan to attend one of their star watching parties, bet we could ride up past the gate and camp. :laughing

buffoon of watchtower pics, maybe … :toothless

here’s tonight’s version:

Williams Hill BLM … pretty sure that’s the planet Venus to the west above the Calandra fire tower. :ride

I love that I know exactly where you are from that pic! Did you do any exploring on the "road" back and to your right?

Edit: And I was 100% wrong - hah! :ride
