Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

preaching to the choir here in our quaint BARF Adventure Riding forum—but the new BDR movie captures a little bit of how northern California opens up when you finally get off your sport-touring bike and start exploring our dirt roads:

I think I need to hit Patterson again, but maybe not alone.

If you do a lot of freeway I'd imagine the CRF300 would suck, I was very impressed with the bone stock one I rented and road in Costa Rica, even with my fat ass and my ~50lbs of gear it was happy to haul me around. I did have to wring it's neck properly to climb steep hills and I was going nowhere near US freeway speeds. I'd guess there's some software to uncork the motor a bit, and that plus some aftermarket work for the suspension it'd be a very fun bike.

That said I am about to embark on a ride to Nevada on my DRZ which will involve a lot of freeway and I'm not looking forward to that part. THe bike does well enough, but I hate smoking dirt tires just slabbing.

We're opting for the NVBDR + the first two days of the SocalBDR tacked on so we can play in deep sand (for some reason) because a certain riding buddies baby date pushed up our itinerary ahead of any chance of the snow melting for the NorcalBDR.

I always lust after something newer, but then I get on the DRZ and I'm reminded of how fun it is to ride...

Thought I saw your DRZ parked in Austin this weekend...

Don't ride a 701 unless you're prepared to buy one. It's a unicorn! 🦄

:thumbup

yes, I got to do a big loop around the Rodeo Grounds on the Mr @bananachunks mighty 701 and was impressed at how it’s probably way, way more bike than I’d ever be able to utilize. :facepalm

I just sat on the Mr @cwanger2000 late model KTM 890 Rally, which had the virtue of making the 701’s seat hight seem reasonable. :laughing

in any event, yeah, after my brief ride I was all like “no wonder Mr @stratslingr77 loves his 701” … :ride

The busy season at my work is winding down, Mrs Cabrito was out of town, and I had a whole two day weekend. Quick ride out to Los Padres National Forest with my good friend Sean for some dispersed camping.

Hardly anyone out here, and the best spots next to the creek were taken or didn't have any shade. Eventually we found a great spot for the night.

Reconnoitering by foot in full ADV garb in 90+ temps is fun.

Flat space with shade.

Just a little view of the cool rocks

Food bliss achieved

Hard to tell, but the hills were carpeted in yellow.

Riding through Hunter Liggett is cool.

Nice, I recommend this spot here next time:

36°05'08.8"N 121°25'17.4"W

EDIT: watch out for rattle snakes in that grass camping these days!

Yes and yeah road six has some nice spots. The good ones were taken. This area is a regular thing for me. Spring flowers are insane

Is a salt circle a real thing??
I know it is an old wives tale and won't kill the snake, but will it repel them?

Returning to a favorite ADV area around Bowman Lake. The BS part is that I 'gasp' hauled my bike up on the van - don't look @SFMCjohn

I went to reconnoiter camp spots for next weekend in van with Mrs Cabrito so I hauled up the 300 for scouting.

I wanted to make sure the roads were suitable for the van

While scouting for a spot I had camped at over ten years ago I came across a familiar landmark.

Eventually I found this sweet spot with no other campers around.

I was just there overnight but I got out on three rides including the initial scouting for a spot.

Bowman Lake

The road out to the Bowman campgrounds is nice an rocky.

I can't believe that I've ridden this on my KTM 1090 with some other BARF Luminaries, and my 990 but, it's not that bad. This is not someplace I'm taking my van though.

Enjoyed a nice sunset from the site

The ability to take a shower on before hitting the road is a nice bonus

Not too bad for a quick overnight.

I hit Section 3 and 4 of the NorCal BDR this weekend on the good ole' Africa Twin. I rode Section 3 a couple of weeks ago on my 701; it was more fun on that bike, not gonna lie.

Section 4 was a lot of fun--even on the big bike.

We also dipped our toes in Section 5, making it up Verdi Peak before turning for home. The road up was pretty spicy on the big girl.

It was 114⁰ getting across the Valley 🤮

A buck fourteen ain't no joke...!! :wow
