Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

the other trick is to leave a half-hour before sunrise, which is what I do to try to beat the dust of 500 riders. :ride

and +1 on the on-line registration thing. dogs and cats, sleeping together. :x

Leaving early sounds nice, but I'd still worry about being in the way and being an annoyance to pass, at least if I can see a little dust I'll know I'm going the right way :laughing

well, there's that ... I used to get epically lost. :laughing

with all this talk of on-line registration, I wonder if they'll at last succumb to the demands for .gpx trax or will still be doing the roll chart? :dunno:afm199

Hmm, yeah, if they don't have a track, I'll have to figure out how to do a roll chart and or get lost...

^^:thumbup

I always got lost, trying to use the Sheetiron 300 roll chart, until I learned my way around. :facepalm:laughing

and, here it is! the NorCal BDR:

did anyone go see the movie at MotoGuild? I was out of town, or I'd have enjoyed seeing it.

guess I'll have to wait until May to watch on YouTube.

going to have some fun figuring out what exactly the map is showing me ... :ride

John, the GPX tracks are available for GPS and auto-import to Gaia. I know you don't use a gps, but you might be able to get the tracks into other applications.

The Movie was fun and showed a lot of cool places with some history, and a few fire lookouts.

I liked how they showed some of the hard sections and also showed the two injuries that happened. One broken hand and one broken leg. I wonder if this was intentional to warn people with little off pavement experience? They also had a few of the Zero electric ADV bikes that did great.

Getting my 300 ready for noobs next month. Will I see you there?

Parting adventure shot..

Mr NSFW/Joel has my $170 for teh n00bs 2024, so I’m in. which means 50/50 that I’ll show up. :rolleyes

I do want to try to see people kayaking in the new lake in Badwater Basin.

Ms Lucytriple is still helping me with the KLR top end, so that may be a fly in my n00bs 2024 ointment. :facepalm

for we non-gps types, the “interactive map” on the BDR website works pretty well for the new NorCal BDR route:

Backcountry Discovery Routes

spent about a half-hour last night zoomed in following it from south to north. recognized a lot of stuff, but there was also a ton of stuff I’d never done. :party

have a reservation on July 25-27th at campsite #16 for Mr Catfish’s Downieville Daze, at the Packsaddle campsite, which turns out to be basically right on the new NorCal BDR route. should have plenty of room for you, Mr Cabrito, if you want to make an appearance at Downieville Daze 2024 this year. :ride

pic of the Mills Peak watch tower, a bonus side route on the NorCal BDR, I suppose:

went and found the Mills Peak watchtower.

and this is the NorCal BDR bail-out gravel road on the way to Downieville:

the road down from Forest, CA …

and Ms two wheel tramp and Mr CrazyCooter are still working on a date for the Cedarville/End of Pavement Rally in August, maybe, which is up around the north end, of course.

pretty cool BDR stuff, so exciting. :banana

I was there at Motoguild, saw a few BARFers and a few folks I've met on group rides via other friends. Fun movie and, as intended, made me want take off for a week or so of dual sporting. Pretty impressed that they got all those big bikes up and down Patterson as I found that to be plenty of work on my DRZ.

yes, that's the part of the new movie I'm looking forward to, their climb up Mt Patterson.

the two times I've been up there it was a real handful for me on a loaded pre-gen KLR! :facepalm:laughing

It seemed like a handful on a mostly unloaded DRZ, mighta been compounded by my being by myself and therefore slightly worried about what would happen if I were to send the bike off the trail on one of those steep side hills which certainly felt like a possibility at times!

progress! :party

a new cam chain arrived, and the year 2000 model’s engine is back together, in plenty of time for the n00bs Rally in Death Valley later this month:

Ms Lucytriple photo, she’s keeping me rolling for the last few years with this KLR and the ‘88 BMW, god bless her. :angel

the fly in my “ride a pre-gen until 2031, and then reassess” plan, at least with this particular bike, is pot-metal KLR frames and parts begin to crack. we found a huge crack in the muffler:

picture.php

I like to keep running the stock 40 lb KLR exhaust system, cuz I used to think they are pretty bomb-proof—but apparently we have finally been able to put the lie to that truism. :facepalm:laughing

we’ll maybe weld this one up, if the welder thinks it’s worthwhile, and I’ve got a spare muffler in my parts horde, so the crack problem should be wrestled to the ground next week.

in any event, things are looking up for my 2024 dual sport riding season, yay! :clown

Moto Lucia rocks out loud and in public!!!!
I missed you as I picked up my refurbished NC. It came back like a new bike :love

Lucy is great. My Ducati will be paying her a visit for a new rear tire this month, and then new tires again and a desmo service once I'm back from Texas.

I have a hall pass the week of July 14..will tentatively plan on tackling the NorCal BDR and possibly loop back down via the northern NV BDR sections into Austin. Or the Emerald Loop route through Trinity/Mendo.

Trying to find a time to do that one as well. All this snow makes me think even July might be too early?

I have a reservation at Packsaddle #16 for July 25-27th. should be plenty of room for ride-ins, if you guys are around. :party

here's more pre-gen KLR progress, Ms Lucytriple and her welder guy got my exhaust failure fixed up:

looks pretty good and bombproof. I had a spare in my parts horde, so this one will go back in the parts pile until I need it. :clown

hopefully the KLR will be ready to be picked up and start the new-top-end break in process, and then it's off to Death Valley later this month, if the gods are willing. :rolleyes

this is kinda a fun vid, cuz the guy was just at the n00bs Rally, along with me and Mr Cabrito and Mr bananachunks. I missed my chance to speak with Mr Dork in the Road, but I'm thinkin' about a 335 lb Honda CRF300L Rally, if I ever give up on pre-gen KLRs:

John, his assessment of the power issues mirror my experience, and we both had similar issues on the same stretch of road mentioned in the video with the only difference is I could hold 55mph in 4th gear at 8k rpm..

The Rally shows its limitations on long hills at freeway speeds.

yes, that's my only hesitation with the CRF300 Rally, is the freeway stuff.

Mr bananachunks turned me on to the CFMOTO Ibex 450, today:

tl/dr: "Powering the Ibex 450 is an absolute peach of a motor."

have to say, the Ibex is checking all the boxes ... :dunno
