Another car/SUV thread - Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Dodge Durango

Something more off road capable may be more fun.

Check out the 4 Runner TRD Pro.

Roommate is in love with 4runners and said the same thing. I respect their off-road capabilities and all but I can't stand the interiors. Bunch of cheap bulky plastic tonka toy crap. And the V6 vs a Hemi...?

Toyota still uses the block line clocks from the 80's. Good reliability, pretty shitty interiors (and options). I don't get it. Then again, aside from Taco owners, Toyota drivers are the absolute worst and most annoying drivers on the road. If they're in a Prius or Highlander, double that statement.

I just did this. Nothing met expectations

Toyota has gone full plastic on the interiors. Feels like shit.
GC has transmission problems unless you go Hemi and then it's grossly over priced.

We didn't want seating for 7

Acura won easily

GC's are nice, but super low in terms of quality. Same on the Durango and while I like both, we steered away from them. Ended up with the Explorer sport (boring, but nice...and easy to mod up) for my sister. The MDX is nice, but we have two in our company and our CFO's 15' has been in the shop 3X already for some serious repairs. Our Assistant controllers 2010 the company provides her has oil consumption issues. Not impressed, sad to say. And I really like Acura product.

2010 ram 1500 the only thing that ever failed under warranty was a manifold bolt and the right side mirror auto tilt function. Both fixed, no biggie. 66k miles with no other issues when I sold it..

Our Dodges have been the best trucks in our fleet of 25+ trucks. We work the shit out of them. The 2012's have had a few issues, but overall, much better than Fords. My 2010 Laramie I replaced and gave to my dad. 110K miles, one exhaust manifold cracked and needed a new passenger side hub. Bullet proof other than that...oh and I changed the plugs at 90K and it was still running pretty darn smooth (oops).

Is their anything out there less reliable than a Chrysler product?

Resale value would suffer I would think.

yes:

BMW
Audi
Mercedes
Yamaha...

Pete, I know it doesn't have the luxury you want, but what about a Jeep Rubicon? Best resale value around, bar none. Literally, it's #2 on the retained value list (for the last 4 years too). It has to be the 4 door model.

It's not really the "luxury" I'm interested in, it just happens to be a nice feature. I'd be happy with a base model SXT - IF I could have the Hemi with it. Unfortunately, they don't offer the Hemi on anything less than the Citadel trim, so luxury it is.

TrueCar is spitting out $38k configured the way I want it (and with all the incentives I qualify for...let alone if I can work anything else out through the dealership). Hell of a lot better than the $49k sticker price Dodge's website is suggesting.

That's a hell of a lot cheaper than a comparable X5 ($70k ish starting for a similar sized engine), MDX ($47k ish). And you get a lot of truck / SUV bang for buck there I think.

I was gonna say the Wrangler Unlimited would be cool. Hard top convertible and great resale with a huge aftermarket to boot.

I went from a set-up off-road Taco to a lifted Tahoe Z71. We'll see how the Tahoe does off-road this deer season. If it sucks I'll look to the Jeep. My friend has one that toes his boat just fine. And the V8 in my Tahoe feels less powerful than the V6/6-speed in the Taco (and I babied that thing) so displacement isn't much of a concern. The Tahoe interior is way better than the Taco, though. Million-way adjustable heated leather seats are nice.

I'm an admitted Toyota fanboy, though. Another Taco, 4-Runner, even FJ Cruiser are all cars I'd gladly rock.

I agree that the Tahoe interiors are nice...but holy fuckballs did they make the latest ones ugly. I really don't like the super squared off looks - it's why I don't like the Wranglers, the Ford Flex, Scion Shitbox, etc. Just no.

Even the newer FJs are borderline for me.

Heh mine is a 2005. Not a huge fan of the new ones but I sat in one and that interior is freakin deluxe.

But, come on. You can't place a Wrangler in the same category as a XB or Flex in any other way than looks.

As far as interiors go, nothing beats a Toyota when it comes to cup holders. I loved all the different drink sizes my Tacoma accommodated.

If interiors are big for you, then you know what to do. Get the XC90 dude. IMO The R-design seats are even more comfy and cooler than the CTS-V recarco options.

:laughing

You guys are killing it lately.

The Consumer Reports 2015 Car Brand Report Cards ranks automakers across the world by reliability, road test performance and other factors. For the second year in a row, Lexus topped the list, nearly matched by Mazda, and followed by Toyota and Audi. The bottom of the list included Ford, Dodge, Mini, Jeep and Fiat.

Here's some more data; GMC did well, as did Lincoln and Ram.

Much worse than average were Fiat, Nissan, Jeep, Land Rover, Smart, Ford, Dodge.

The Volvo's is nice and higher quality materials - more plush - but...yeah.

Are those the higher end models. You can get an XC90 T5 since you don't need 3rd row seats for upper 40s. That's not far off from the Jeep.

Its nice being able to hit a bumpy patch going around an 80mph sweeper and not have a solid axle rear end bounce you into the next lane.

Yep.

BTW, that's what Fox-body Mustang lovers never understood.

"But, dawg, solid axles are better for drag!!!!" Never mind that the vast majority of them never took it to the track.

Back when the Fox body was designed, the only track was the ol' 1320, Reli!

The 4 runner is pretty well known for it's off road capabilities. They are designed with high approach and departure angles in mind.

Some like the body on frame design. (i'm one of them) rather than unibody.

Don't forget rear locker, and crawl control.

ok, does anyone spend 45k on a vehicle they plan on 4 wheelin like in your second picture? my point is very, very, very few actually care about rear lockers. for 45k i could buy a truck, a trailer, and a dedicated wheeler. rule number 2 for a wheeler is make sure its not your daily driver. i make fun of my buddy who has a decked out brand new jeep with super swampers and lives in san francisco. alot of these 4 wheelin vehicles sold today only see curbs in grocery store parking lots.

its like buying a truck with a six foot bed. are you serious?

Surprisingly, no not necessarily. I looked at an SXT vs a Citadel and aside from a few extra buttons for butt warmers and leather vs cloth/synthetic seats they're far closer than previous generations between trim levels - hence my comment on being fine with a base model w/ V8 vs the premium. Heck, you can even get the butt warmers and heated steering wheel separately with the cloth seats and such - just no V8 / upgraded transmission.
