Another car/SUV thread - Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Dodge Durango

The WRX is great, but I'm already getting that itch and it's not a good sign considering I usually keep vehicles for at least 4-5 years before the itch sets in. If it's bugging me at 4 months, might as well start shopping...since I do that for a few months before buying anything anyway.

So, what's the deal with the new Grand Cherokees vs Durangos? Far as I can tell from initial poking around online, the Durango is on a slightly stretched platform, has a nicer interior, and 3rd row seating. The Jeep has more aftermarket stuff for offroading (though most of it does fit the Durango too), bigger rear storage (though smaller undercompartments).

I like the looks and interiors of the Durango a lot more than the Jeep but don't need the 3rd row seating. On the other hand, I've got some ideas for something in the back that would replace that 3rd row seat - the mounting points would make a very convenient bolt-in location.

I personally think they're both pretty nice looking SUVs inside and out. I get a lot of people who cross shop the MDX to the Grand. Having driven both, I can easily say that Honda/Acura has by far, by really fucking far, the better driving vehicle on road. But the Jeep just feels more "truck like" and gives you more confidence when it comes to duties beyond the Costco parking lot.

But damn....there is a black cloud over those Chrysler twins, and I don't mean because one of them just killed the new Mr. Chekov. They've got some massive reliability issues. Transmission failures have been reported at an alarming rate. Not sure what the Chrysler warranty situation is anymore, but if it isn't a pretty robust one (used to be lifetime, is it still?) on the powertrain, then I'd seriously think just lease or make sure to flip it before the warranty is out. In other words, treat it like the Mercedes ML that it's somewhat based on.

That said, unless I was going just mega and went for the SRT (with a fantastic warranty), I would probably pass and maybe wait a year and see if Ford really does bring back the Bronco.

Apparently any '15s left on the lots are going with 100k mile warranties, '16s are coming with 60k. Powertrain is still lifetime AFAIK - not sure where to find that to check at the moment. And as long as the dealer fixes it...ehhhh if some shit eventually breaks after 40k miles and then they replace it, then...they replace it. :dunno If they're footing the bill for it anyway, I doubt it's gonna just happen out of the blue and leave me stranded somewhere.

tahoe

highlander

they all outsell those other 2x models by ALOT

for a good reason as well

You would replace a WRX with a mid sized SUV? Do you have kids or something?

EDIT: Whatever you do, don't get the regular Cherokee. One of the ugliest front ends ever.

I don't like either. New Tahoe's too squared off / boxy / big and I just don't like the looks / interior / performance of the highlander. If I'm gonna go that big I'll get another Ram 1500.

No kids that I'm aware of. I've always liked the Durangos and talked myself out of buying one twice. Not a 3rd time.

And agreed on the regular Cherokee. Fuck. No.

Don't both those models need the Anton Yeltchin fix?

Just the Jeep. The Durango has a rotary gear shift. (which I actually really like since they won't put the shifter back on the steering column anymore, so at least this stays out of the way and is unobtrusive).

Something more off road capable may be more fun.

Check out the 4 Runner TRD Pro.

Roommate is in love with 4runners and said the same thing. I respect their off-road capabilities and all but I can't stand the interiors. Bunch of cheap bulky plastic tonka toy crap. And the V6 vs a Hemi...?

Definitely go with any vehicle that is not the Grand Cherokee.

Didn't realize they were the same thing. I wouldn't buy either of those.

I just did this. Nothing met expectations

Toyota has gone full plastic on the interiors. Feels like shit.
GC has transmission problems unless you go Hemi and then it's grossly over priced.

We didn't want seating for 7

Acura won easily

If you want twice as many problems in your life..get a new dodge. Quality is shit. I have an 02 Cummins and luckly the only piece that is dodge is the body/electrical. My odds are slightly better. They were decent when Benz owned them..worse now that Fiat does.

I lookied at a new 4runner last year but after driving and seeing the interior I said no way. It feels like a truck and I wasn't shopping for a truck feeling non truck vehicle.
