another car thread: new, econobox x2

Build quality on Hyundai and Kia both isn't too stellar once you have the view I have.

There's a reason Hyundai makes a car that competes with a M-B E class for half the price.

Maybe they were just between real employees. Not sure what your capacity at the dealership was, but I assure you working for a dealership is a real job. And I damn sure know who makes my product.

Love the snarkiness! I was on the Nissan side of a dual line dealership, and had no direct Kia training of any kind. That said, we shared technicians, and it was always fun to hang out in the shop as they pointed out the shortcomings of the Kias. I also spent a lot of time with our warranty person, who absolutely hated dealing with Kia.

Cute comment about the 'real' employees, though. I suppose I set myself up for that one. :laughing

Well the Kia Optima is the same thing as the Hyundia Elantra, except for styling and suspension tuning.

I don't know where the hell did you get that info.

do you just pull if out of your gut feeling?

just checked a car site, the cars even have different engines.

they have different aspect ratio on tires, and different dimensions.

owning 40% is not the same as making the same cars I guess! But they sure can share the same top designer.

Who is buying it? For $40K most people would want more than just a "green" car. Sure, it probably has good torque at low speed, but what about handling? luxury? $40K is new BMW territory.

Volt sales have been picking up actually.

Who's buying them? My dad bought one, and I'm damn near ready to buy one for myself. And his fully loaded one was $45k. He likes the "green" car thing so much now he went and got a Toyota RAV4 EV to replace his SUV.

The handling and ride is better than you think. Sure it's got shit tires that are meant for low rolling resistance, but the low center of gravity allows for little body roll. And the heavy weight lets it soak up bumps pretty well without too much drama. It's so quiet that the stereo sounds every bit as good as the Audis and what not with 20 speakers everywhere. Plus it's got lots of other bells and whistles. For $45k it's a helluva car. And in my hands will probably be good for ~200mpg.

The only thing I worry about is batteries burning up while charging and taking my garage/house with it.

The tech hasn't been out that long, what happens when it ages.

You throw it out. See the luxury car thread...

Relax dude, I meant the Sonata, not the Elantra.
They've made so many forgettable cars it's hard to keep the names straight.

There's all kinds of thermal management with those batteries. Not too sure about the others, but the Volt's pack is liquid cooled/heated. They keep the pack within a pretty specific temp range to maximize its life.

So I'm sure if something went nanners, the charger would dial back the amperage, the radiator fan would come on, and the pump would be going.

i predict 10 year old volts will be the official cause of many meth lab fires

Fuck that. The Volt battery is only 16kwh. That big fat 85kwh one in the top of the range Tesla will be the choice for all the would be Walter White/Heisenberg cooks of the future.

I'm off to buy an Audi then. Anybody have a 2-4 y/o used one? :D

I think Queen Wendy has an Audi she'd be happy to sell you.

I heard that one but no thanks, I don't need an allroad car, that, in the words of Top Gear "will [successfully] handle a couple of wet leaves in the driveway"... sporty is a better fit for me

I've heard that story before but I may have a bit of a bias.

For the Volt to go up in flames you'd almost HAVE to have a damaged cell, which means either an accident so bad the pack was mechanically crushed, or the very rare case of a defectively manufactured cell.

Don't get me wrong, statistically it WILL happen, but almost certainly not during/because of charging and I would be surprised if the rate is higher than for fires in modern internal combustion vehicles.

test drove a stripped down 5 speed FIT last night. felt fine to me, wife not impressed.

ford dealer didn't even assault us, perhaps they liked the warmth of the showroom? we were in the showroom too and not even a halfassed attempt at contact. did sales tactics change since the last time i bought a car 10 years ago?

So what didn't the wifey like about it? Too noisy? Not comfy enough? Curious, as this is one of the econo boxes I am considering as well.

I think they have changed a bit with so many people complaining about being assaulted with sales people as soon as they step on the lot.
