Actually a 2 door with a hatch is more practical for me than a 4 door sedan. Although if yours is the wagon...

I keep telling myself with each repair that it's going to get more reliable because I fixed something. I know I'm lying to myself, and I will never stop needing to bail water from this leaky boat.

It has left me stranded more than all my previous cars combined.

I had a 280z that I got from my old man back in 1983 that I poured money into and it was a great car with sentimental value; reasonably reliable for a car its age, looked great, ran great at the track, and never let me down.

In the early '90's it developed an electrical glitch that sometimes meant you had to try as many as six times turning the key to get it to start...it always started but left me with gnawing doubt.

One day at rush hour in downtown Santa Rosa it died approaching a light and wouldn't bump start as I coasted to the light. Had to push the damned thing around a corner into a parking lot, a nice guy gave me hand, but I almost ran over my foot with the left rear tire and by the time I got it into the parking lot I said to myself, "if this SOB starts when I get in it I'm getting rid of it."

Started right up, had a new car within 2 weeks.

if i had a wagon i'd not let go of it. an old porsche is always going to be spendy. is yours suffering from deferred maintenance catch up syndrome?

yeah, previous owner (my friend) kept up on maintenance in his head but in reality deferred a lot of it, then let some hack tuner work on it, then had the hack reverse all the work, then essentially let it sit for 7 years.

Since getting it 2 years and 8k mi ago, I have (off the top of my head) done:
- Timing belt and water pump replacement
- Battery replacement
- Alternator replacement
- Replaced diode on alternator clutch relay
- Master cylinder replacement
- DME replacement, and sealed corroded battery tray
- Replaced hatch switch
- Replaced hatch motor, twice
- Replaced sunroof lifter
- Drained a few gallons of water from rear passenger wheel well
- Replaced all (or most?) vacuum hoses
- Replaced several coolant hoses
- Replaced oil pan gasket
- Replaced idle screw in throttle body, twice
- Replaced speedo gear

It needs a new clutch and about 30 small things done. I don't have garage space and a lift anymore, so paying for the work is painful. Clutch will run me ~$2500-$4,000 depending on who I have do the work. Car is worth maybe $6k.

That doesn't seem all that bad at all. Outside of the timing belt, I don't see those as big ticket items at all. Mainly stuff thats inline with a 20+ year old car.

As for your clutch, I hear there is a FANTASTIC independent Porsche wrench that is on this forum that I would absolutely trust.:)
 

Transaxle with turbo plumbing running under the bellhousing. 23 hour job by the Porsche book (16 if you have the 2-piece crossover, which I'm not sure I do). Yup.

Multiply that by the rates even independent garages are charging...

he works on audis too, and i bet he can do a clutch on a 944 faster than book time. it's still going to be expensive though.

i've seen a bimmer or 2 in there. on yours specifically... call and find out. he does allllll the work on a certain other barfer's extensive and revolving collection of vehicles. from american musclecars to eurotrash hotrods i hear.
 
That basically means, if you go over your car regularly with a fine tooth comb looking for imminent failure and just replace all the parts before they break, nothing will break. Duh. That's not reliable.

I'm sorry but that's basically what Germans do.

You got a sweet Silver Miata, Leather interior, 6 speed, side airbags, Bose premium sound, etc etc, etc. Best part is you paid ~3K under KBB suggested retail. That little MX-5 you got is a hot little car... for a girl :twofinger
