Please don't tell me you're surprised.
Considering the level of violence that they're all witnessing, the average person wouldn't be prepared to intervene and overcome.
Even the more-than-average would be reluctant to intervene these days.
I've my fair share of self-defense experience and I carry tools on me but if I witnessed a beatdown like that I might think twice.
Worst case scenario I end up introducing a lethal weapon to the mix and get myself and the victim killed anyway. Or miss a shot in that subway car and put a bullet in a nun in the next car over. Or successfully defending the victim, shooting the attacker and getting the George Zimmerman treatment afterwards. Or insert xxx many ways shit can possibly go bad.
Seen way too many videos of good guys intervening in 3rd party conflicts and domestics and they end up dying for getting involved.
It's been 50 years since Kitty Genovese and things haven't gotten better because the law seems to favor criminals rights these days.
Cops are getting raked over the coals for justified shoots because apparently facts and truth take second place to feelings and they want private citizens to take up that mantle instead? No thanks.
Everybody's gotta take responsibility for their own safety. And yea thinking of my 84-year-old mother it even pains me to say that, because there's no way in hell she can defend herself in some random attack like that, and it would absolutely break me to find out after the fact that people just watched.
My coworker has a CCW and routinely carries. He's repeatedly stated that he'd rather avoid a conflict due to the legal peril that would follow any such incident....Worst case scenario I end up introducing a lethal weapon to the mix and get myself and the victim killed anyway. Kind of interesting, don't you think?I think that this can be one of the ways in which a CCW keeps a responsible person safe. They are somewhat less likely to engage in an altercation when carrying because of how badly it could turn out.

Elliot was convicted of stabbing his mother to death in the Bronx in 2002, when he was 19, online court records show. He was released from prison in 2019 and is on lifetime parole.
Kind of interesting, don't you think?
Especially when you frame it with the usual post-mass shooting gun control rhetoric.

I feel everyone deserves a defense but what is their lawyer gonna say? He was having a bad day? Like when he stabbed his mom to death?
He was the victim of a terrible childhood, brought on by a discriminatory society.

Has anyone ever gotten off with this defense? By that rationale nobody is responsible for anything.
