With my back and knees I’m probably a good 10 years from needing a cane to get around, if I’m unlucky enough to live that long.
Until then, I don’t see myself carrying one for a just-in-case. Can’t stand having a hand occupied and I’m the kind of guy that would leave change on the counter just so I don’t have coins jangling in my pocket.
Didn’t know she had a book out and don’t know much about her frankly. I know she did some training with Sonny Umpad but that’s the extent of my knowledge. Any good?
I'm a gray beard silverback with an artificial hip now, so while I can walk without a cane now I was reliant on one before the hip got replaced and for some months after. I got used to using it and still carry one on walks.
I've mostly done internal Chinese styles, yeah I'm a tai chi pussy, but there are some cane forms in those systems and when I had to use a cane I got to thinking about that. The jumpy kicky spinning moves in those cane forms are not possible for me now and probably not practical, the basic strikes and blocks might be useful.
I haven't done more than skim Maija's book, I picked it up at one of her seminars. A couple of ideas I got from her are: a feint has to look real and the first thing in fighting with weapons is to not get hit.

Well, she isn't wrong, but her presentation seems to carry a lot of confirmation bias, so I reckon that you should take it with a grain of salt. The New Segregationist crowd is the enemy of all BIPOC.
I was reading an article the other day and they were talking about these super problematic products sold in China that used blackface in their advertising, products like Darkie Toothpaste. This Chinese product, invented about 100 years ago in China, sold mainly only in China to Chinese people, is apparently the fault of White Supremacy.
All those damn Chinese White Supremacists.
Both are illegal to own, transport to or transfer. CA REALLY, REALLY hates weapons designed to be disguised. Cane guns and sword canes both have their own special dedicated section of the code book dedicated to just them. My understanding is that they are defined as a wobbler, meaning that even if you just possess one, the DA can choose to charge you with a felony if he likes.

I'm so privileged to have Asian people in my life. I have learned so much from them. If you see hate heading towards Asians, please do something about it. We need to start helping our fellow people. We are all human beings that deserve basic human kindness. It's easy and it's free. That's all.
