Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

Not really off topic. She seems to be coming off a bit ham handed, but the message seems good and well intended.

It struck me that she might not know that Indians are Asians (and Pakistani, etc).

Off topic...friend's wife posted this on FB. I read it and it just comes across oddly; anyone else feel the same way, and if so, why?

I'll say this just once. Asian people are not the virus. Asian people are not YOUR model minority. Asian people are wonderful, amazing, hard-working, intelligent, and beautiful. I'm so privileged to have Asian people in my life. I have learned so much from them. If you see hate heading towards Asians, please do something about it. We need to start helping our fellow people. We are all human beings that deserve basic human kindness. It's easy and it's free. That's all.

the first few sentences read like she was responding to something specific that someone else wrote. if that’s the case, hard to think anything without knowing what that was.

if that’s not the case - the bolded bits would have worked for me.

Asia is a big bucket. Turkey, Iraq, Yemen, ect is in that bucket too. Many Russians too.

Its like when you tell your friend he can have one nacho, but since they are all stuck together he takes all of them and says he only took one nacho.

OK, thanks for responses, was just curious if anyone noticed/thought the same as I do. Let me add a caveat; my friend's wife is well-meaning and a good person, if not the most eloquent.

To break it down:

Asian people are not YOUR model minority.

OK. Not sure the emphasis on "Your." Does she mean we are indeed a model minority, just that we don't exist to serve others? I took it to mean Asians are not a monolith, that we are more than just the model minority myth/stereotype, and that Asians are individuals.

Asian people are wonderful, amazing, hard-working, intelligent, and beautiful.

This is the sentence I find particularly odd. In the sentence before this one, my friend's wife seems to remind that Asians are not all the same, not merely cogs in some collective, etc.

Here, lol...we are all wonderful, amazing, hard-working, intelligent, and beautiful, aka a model minority! What happened to us as individuals?

I briefly considered responding with "we are individuals," but immediately thought better of it. But you know, some Asians are lazy, not intelligent, not good people; some are even incarcerated!

What happened to not being monolithic, to not being merely a model minority collective, and to being individuals? All gone in one subsequent sentence.

I'm so privileged to have Asian people in my life. I have learned so much from them.

Again, we are individuals, friend's wife.

:thumbup

Anyway, nitpicky I realize, message was well-intentioned. It does bug me, even in the context of positive statements, that "Asians" are often all lumped in together, deemed part of a collective with same culture and thinking, same focus on education, etc.

So I take it she's not Asian?

And she stereotyped y'all.

Game over! Give up your badge, you incorrect stereotypifizer. You're unfit for your job! :p

I know, damn it!

I failed at stereotyping a stereotypist. :rant

Why did she say anything at all? Sorry Jimmy...she don't sound too bright from her statement (and only her statement). The thing reads like a rice cake...air and puff.

:laughing

I won't say too much, except that a mutual friend of ours jokes/reminds us of this wife..."well, she IS from Rio Linda."
