Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

Not sure, your elder probably did good on that one. How wise is it to "do" something .. against a peeling off car?

Related, what would you have to do if you had to teach girl-children? Again, "standing up" is not very safe sometimes.

I agree, the story was just one of the more visual experiences. Honestly I doing nothing was the right response. Not talking about it at all between father-son, that could have been different. I understand though, applying a 2021 mindset against a 90s mindset is not fair. The mrs and I do talk to our kids regularly though.
This one jr high teacher (white) kept mixing up names of the azn kids in her class FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR. We talked through it with my son. Did not raise hell w the teacher though, she's older and really seemed set in her ways. Our younger son may get the same teacher next year, we're keeping an eye out for a possible repeat.

When dating, I was surprised to meet fragrant racist of many colors on the first date. Right here in the valley. I guess they were looking for other people with there own "values" :laughing

What would be the best way as a white dude to be an ally to Asian Americans at this time?

Just speak up about it when a colleague or someone you know says some kind of shit like Wuhan China Flu or asians love eating dogs or something stupid shit along those lines. Would we really tolerate something like that if it were said for anyone else or someone we personally know? So long as stuff like gets passed on or looked the other way, then it'll continue to fester and persist.

Don’t call us oriental. We’re not a rug nor vase.

Just kidding lol

I think the best would be to just treat us like we’re just like you. A member of the human race with dreams, feelings and fears.

As I treat all people. :thumbup

I admire the human race. They are fascinatingly complicated beings.

I have a friend back in Canada who teaches University classes and he was saying that he notices less participation from his "Asian" students so he goes out of his way to call on them so they get participation, but In found his classifying "all Asians" as quiet and meek as kind of wrong and called him out. It didn't go great.

Was I right or wrong in that situation?

I treat everyone as human. I admit I only had mostly white Jewish friends until I moved to the Bay Area.

So true. I remain friends with high school cohorts, and we regret some of the things we/said did to people. I was also picked on at times (youngest in class always, small stature), but by high school, I was probably the asshole.

Sadly, it is a cycle. The true warrior wishes always for peace.

I agree with that.

My sensei told us to walk away from a fight, if you can't walk then run. If a fight is unavoidable, then end it quickly and efficiently with everything you have. He also told us to never let others know about your training, make their first hint of what you're capable of to come as you're neutralizing them.

LOL...the things we argue about.

Have to generalize sometimes right, for efficiency? Or, have a standing caveat that "the following statements are, by necessity, generalizations."

Your friend is right, generally, about Asian culture and the focus away from individualism (including speaking up). I've always found participation to be awkward (I'm also fairly introverted, even aside from native culture).

Yes, this is the true path.

Indeed. Shanti shanti.

I agree this stuff is abhorrent, but I do question some of the "hate crime" classifications. A hate crime has somewhat of an implication that the crime's motivation is due to some kind of racial retaliation.

I live a block away from Chinatown in Oakland where elderly asian people are attached frequently. I personally believe it's because they're vulnerable and easy targets more anything to do with their race.

I'm inclined to believe that OPD classifies these crimes as "hate crimes" actually because it's the only way to keep those committing the crimes off the street. Regular theft or battery would not.

Either way, the crimes are disgusting.

Interesting perspective.

I've always viewed hate crimes as a crime committed against and individual based upon them being part of a sub-group like race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Basically they're targeted for being a member, not for something specific to them, aside from their inclusion in a group.

However, by that definition, attacking somebody who mistakenly wore the wrong color should also be treated as a hate crime. The devil is in the details, especially when establishing motive (beyond a reasonable doubt).
