Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

In the context of this conversation, you're asking why racial minorities, who are underserved by the systems of our society, don't just stop being racial minorities.

I see a lot of people becoming gravely concerned about whites becoming the racial minority in this country - almost as if being a racial minority meant that you were disadvantaged, disenfranchised, or had fewer opportunities to succeed.

(Spoilers, that's what it means)

It's going to be a long time before "whites" become a racial minority in the US. Sure, the "whites" majority is about to be less than 50% of the population, but the "whites" will still be the largest minority in the nation. Hopefully the idea of dropping people into colored buckets as a means of identifying who/what/where we/they are will end before the "whites" lose their majority-minority status. The funny thing is that working toward justice is the surest path to making that happen and only fear blocks it. If we create a system that is just then it shouldn't matter who the minority is anymore and at that point we won't need the colored buckets either. The best part is that it doesn't even have to be a perfect system. It just needs to be on the path to being progressively better than what we currently have. Every journey begins with a single step...blah...blah...

Black Americans have been used and discarded by those that hold power and surf for votes. Their own leaders have done little if anything to help lift their communities out of the doldrums they exist in while making sure to lift themselves personally out of these neighborhoods. It's unconscionable. And it's not a white, brown, yellow, etc thing. It's a greed thing. It's frustrating and it's hard to watch the futility of efforts that are mere curtains for the big act behind: grift.

Growing up, I watched my cousins and Aunt and Uncle deal with the life struggles I wrote above. As kids, we never looked at them differently despite the difference in our skin colors, but we did understand the economic differences. Those economic differences have been the differences between my siblings and my cousins and while we're still family, the opportunities that may come their way with our help are often times neglected due to various family and impulsive choices. It's super frustrating.

Hence, my POV on this subject. Fuck drugs. Fuck alcohol.

You seem to think that simply "making it" in terms of education, wealth, success inures Black folks to racism and that as they get more successful they experience less racism.

This reflects what my friend's wealthy Black friend says with a shrug when visiting him in a nice (mostly White) part of Miami driving an expensive car and dressed conservatively.

"I always get pulled over."

It is a widely-held notion that for many African-Americans who have "made it" — those who earn a good salary, live in a neighborhood with good schools and low crime, that maybe, just maybe, being the target of discrimination would be minimized.

A new poll, by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health surveyed more than 800 African-Americans and found that for prosperous blacks, money does not shield them from bigotry.

Thompson's wife, Tanja, said discrimination plays out in subtle ways.

"Even living here in a gated community, there's definitely racism," she said. She is a former senior master sergeant in the Air Force and now works as a mediator in the federal government.

But when broken down by income, of blacks folks who are high earners — those making $75,000 a year or more — 65 percent say they were the target of racial slurs compared with 40 percent of blacks who make $25,000 or less.

High-income African-Americans outpaced their lower-income counterparts once again on the issue of people making negative assumptions about them, 73 percent and 45 percent respectively.

The link briefly taps into the "glass ceilings" successful Black face as they advance in business, similar to what successful retired Black military officers discussed a few months back on PBSNewshour.

As to CRT, I don't have a handle on it and it may indeed be as flawed as some think, but I do agree that what I was taught when I first came to the US as a young boy from England was hardly true American History as I have come to know it now.

"Manifest Destiny" was some magical quasi religious calling that led to the greatness of America as taught by my glassy eyed teacher.

I found it rather odd and now I know why.

That no longer goes on of course (I don't think) but history that better reflects reality would be a very good thing even if CRT is found to be unsuitable as it seems a bit "off" to me as presented.

The raw TRUE history taught well would be enough IMHO.

wait, what is this thread about now?

:laughing

It's a classic BARF thread in that it branches out exponentially and eventually comes back to near the topic at hand.

Bipartisan agreement is hard to come by but the Senate and House have agreed to this.

The House overwhelmingly passed legislation on Tuesday aimed at strengthening federal efforts to address hate crimes directed at Asian-Americans, clearing the measure for President Biden’s signature.

The bill, approved in a 364-62 vote, is the first legislative action that Congress has taken to bolster law enforcement’s response to attacks on people of Asian descent amid an uptick in discrimination and violence against Asian-American communities during the pandemic.

I keep seeing quotes from folks critical of CRT saying "they just want to teach our kids to hate America." And all I can think is, if my love for this country is maintained solely by decades of falsified history, then I already hate America.

That makes me glad that I left the political forum over a year ago. It does serve a purpose, it provides an outlet to that stuff outside of the KS and anybody who ventures in there knows what they're getting into or at least learns pretty fast.

Berto, sorry to hear that it continues to be toxic, I know that you have a thick skin (like me) developed after years of attacks.

The KS used to be much more to the Right, I took a lot of abuse back 15 years ago when I didn't agree with starting a war in Iraq, there were a group of guys who would follow me around and whenever I posted anything on any subject, they would attack whatever I posted. Yeah, I got banned a few times when I turned around and punted the yapping dogs once in awhile. :laughing

Yeah I remember those days.

I don't know if CRT is the answer but certainly just teaching the true history vs the whitewashed version I was exposed to would be a good step forward.

Never mind that kids mostly hate history class! :laughing

But that is due to poor teachers IMHO as history is fascinating if tied to the present in some way by a creative instructor.

Yeah I don't know if it's the perfect solution (it probably isn't) but any progress is better than where we're at now. Was just in a discussion with some friends on bookface about what we learned about our local indigenous tribes through public education, and it was completely wild seeing how different everyone's experiences were - from not having any education at all, to the very colonized version(s) of the story. Pretty much none of the education we received held up to any academic rigor.

Haha, I think I once got a vacation for getting into it with you (most likely my fault/being a d-bag). I can happily say my last mandatory vacation was in like 2012.

Political forum is not that bad. Once in a while, it's nice to step out (and lately, I haven't been interested or had much to contribute to the topics being discussed); anyway, we could use your input.

It was probably both of us, I wasn't the type to back down in the face of concerted opposition back then which is part of what made me a prime target. :laughing

You were never one of the bad ones.

One of the true artists in getting others banned while skating along the edge of acceptable had a handle related to working with toilets. I lost count of the number of people he caused to get a forced vacation. I personally think that it wasn't dislike or hate that drove him, I believe it was how he amused himself, one of the original trolls. :laughing

Man, toilet-related handle...inquiring minds must know! :laughing

I was definitely a d-bag in my first BARF days, which I attribute to being a teenager (and of course, moto riders are probably more likely to be cocky d-bags, lol).

Would you say you're PLUMB out of ideas?

This thread has been more contentious than most of the Political section threads in recent memory to be honest.

Which, considering the Political situation in 2021 is saying something! :laughing

How much family do you actually have in the US Jimmy, and have any felt the increased negativity we read about in the past 18 months or so?

Most of my family is still in the UK other than siblings and their offspring.

Just about all of my relatives are in Taiwan. In the US, it's just me, mom and brother (we have some distant cousins in Ohio or somewhere that we haven't contacted in decades).

We haven't noticed any negativity whatsoever. My brother (by nature, a bit more paranoid/cautious) lives in Oakland and reads about Bay Area incidents, but nothing has happened to him personally.

My mom and I both live in Davis (not together! lol), which is a progressive college town. No incidents or anecdotes from others whatsoever.
