Baja 2016 Day 8 -
San Ignacio to Bola
Last day of riding in Baha for 2016..

Today Leo, Tom, Scott, and I are going to do a short hump to Viscaino to gas up and ride the desert back to Bola. The rest of the group is going to take the pavement further north before cutting over offroad to visit Mission San Borja.
Folks definitely seem a little slower to load and mount bikes today. Some opting for a nice breakfast at Rice and Beans, while others taking their time checking over the bikes. I dont think anyone wants the trip to be over tonight.
Our group takes off on the short 40 mile pavement run to Viscaino where we will gas up. The forecast had a 10% chance of precipitation for the next day, but half way we are greeted by a very dark wall of moisture. I pull over to don my jacket in case it turns to rain.... but as luck would have it, it was just a very heavy marine layer that would soon burn off.
The plan is to head NE from Viscaino to try a new track that will eventually link up with main dirt road between El Arco and PSF to the east near Rancho Peidro Blanco via Miraflores and Ejido Guillermo Preito. Should be some fun classic baja sand two track. The route delivers just that!
From arrow straight to nice flowing winding trails all the way to a of couple ridges we climb over before being spat out near Rancho Piedro Blanco. At the intersection we stop for an early lunch/brunch out of our bags and watch two DR350's blow by at speed down the main route.
Mounted back up, we make great time back towards PSF stopping only to take a pick of the Sea of Cortez on the short paved downed hill section. Into the long sand wash the group is making great time until we come up behind a slow moving truck. Its a sandy two track, so you cant just pass a slow moving vehicle as it takes up the whole track. To either side of the track is a knee high wall of sand.... so when we get the blinker signal from the truck to pass its a fun "jump" over the wall and into the sand off the track with liberal throttle applied!
We make the final intersection of trails that will take us north to Bola and Scott is missing. After a little conversation we find that Dr. Jensen thought but did not actually see Scott at the last turn. Dr. Jensen is two for two losing folks at intersections these past two years.
So we head back to the last intersection. We leave Leo at the intersection to wait and send Dr Jensen towards PSF and I back towards El Arco. We all are using our boy scout tracking skills in the dirt trying to identify Scotts unique Motoz tire tracks.... I think the Italian Beta might even smell different..
An hour later all are back at the intersection. Scott had indeed made a wrong turn when Dr Jensen didnt wait... and went down to PSF for some gas and a beer.

We are still making ridiculously good time, so no harm no foul. While its the final hours of our trip, it does reinforce the rule of waiting at trail intersections for visual confirmation of the following rider, and if lost, go back to the last known intersection where all riders are known to be present.
We head north through some more fun sandy washes and stop for a short break on the coast at the dunes of San Rafael. Roughly 40 miles to Bola. We make a plan to slow down and all look for Scotts missing GPS about 17 miles from Bola. Scott takes off first and I slowly next. Before I know it, Norcalslowpoke is way off in the distance nearly over the mesa two miles away. Hmmmmmmm unlike his screen name I need to really roll it on to catch up. No slowpoke today.
When I finally do (and it takes all the throttle the XR can muster) I am amazed at how that Beta accelerates compared to my XR tractor. Its fun ghost shadowing him just behind and to the left out of his dust. This section can be a lot of fun at speed with small wheelies over washes and minor jumps out of G outs.
We do eventually slow near the trail north to Los Animas and begin looking to the side of the trail for the lost GPS. Never noticed how many rocks are the same size, shape, and color of a GPS before.

Ultimately we are unsuccessful in the search and start to motor on. Perhaps 10 miles out we come across a mexican teenager fully geared waving us down. His motorcycle has died while pre running tomorrow's Bahia 200 race. He provides instructions on how to find his father at the beginning of the course and we take off like we are in the race with some purpose.
I find his fathers truck and father to relay where his son is in no time before heading into town. We stop at the T shirt vendor and the market for lots of beer to celebrate our last evening in Bola.
Bola is a small town and normally very quite to boot. But the town is ALIVE when we return due to Saturdays race. Its like the state fair and a rock concert has arrived doubling the population. We get back to Daggets as the first group and begin to settle in and drink some beers. I spend some time chatting with the Daggets race bug driver (bug in body only.... its a full frame buggy). Marveling at the suspension and getting all the tech facts about the build.
Josh hasnt arrived yet, nor the other group. But we arent too concerned. Eventually a pickup pulls up before dinner... and its Dmitriy with his KTM in back. That Ktm #3 down.

I'll let him share that story.
With the other group arriving at dusk, we make a plan to all ride in Erics truck to town for dinner, Baja style in the bed.

After a great dinner, we drive to the otherside of town where tech spec and the party is happening. What an AWESOME experience and way to end our trip in Baja. Music, lights, race trucks, buggies, bugs, bikes and even a lighted drone flying over head in this small town.
Josh does eventually make it to Bola later in the evening with his KTM being towed on a boat trailer. He too had quite the Baja baptism and adventure. Dmitriy will ride back with him as Aaron has already left north a day or two earlier. What a trip. Greats folks, great stories, and some epic riding.
I enjoyed riding with everyone and meeting all sorts of new folks along the way. Baja Grateful!
Is is time for 2017 yet?
