Barf Baja 2016 - The ride begins!

Nobody's tube is in my rear... It just never ends...

Merlin and Tom, I can't thank you both enough for getting me rolling again. Actually, all of you guys were great to ride with and drink with. I look forward to our next adventure. And the odds of winning the lottery were higher than of anyone finding my phone on a 110 mile single track, but you did it. Incredible. Baja likes me!

Fran,

It was good to meet you and your friends in Baja and see you here!

It looks like you found the right group down there. First we fix your tire then find your cell phone. Not bad for a bunch of lackies on Little Adventure Bikes aye.

In all honesty it was great to meet and hang out with you guys. I hope to see you again in Baja or some other great spot. Tell Shawn his KTM will blow up if he tries to hang with Team Red in the desert. Yes, the smack talk has begun.:laughing

Wonder what would have happened if we had had TEAM USA ATK there?

Here's a pic of my other Baja Bike. Ka-Toom Baby! KTM 625 SXC, Safari Design 28 ltr tank Rhino Lined exterior, Akrapovic full titanium race exhaust. Opened air-box, Keihin 41 carb, (secret mods), WP 48/60 forks resprung and valved by MX-Tech, Anodized billet triples top and bottom, steering dampner, new LED 10 watt X 2, rear shock resprung and revalved by MX-Tech. Custom billet oil cooler. This monster screams Baja!!

That is a sweet setup! I have an oil in frame 2001 LC4e frame (with a clean NV title) kicking around if you decided you wanted the PITA oil change and extra oil...

Please come next year... ...so I don't have to carry any tool or parts as that bike is practically identical to my 640 :teeth

Gorgeous bike, but how does it look upside down?

Wow, tough crowd..

:rofl or in the back of a pickup or pulled on a boat trailer! :later

Team HONDA! :twofinger Old, slow, and air cooled but always out front. :teeth :ride

I don't remember any Hondas out in front of Dima and I during our ride out of PSF or during our day ride out of Mulege. :twofinger

(Of course, CJ, Tom, and Leo weren't there....)

Houston we have a problem.... (the 1 fucking thing I didn't do to this bike is crack the bottom end cases, Oh well I guess I am doing it now)

Here is my set of cases and crank from the Baja bike (notice the roller 'bearings')

Here is a used set of cases in better condition for comparison (those can't be trusted as I got them for $50 with a 'we took it apart because it was knocking, and the crank off those has a pretty big rub spot on the inside roller bearing race)

I don't think my cases had the bearing spin although I have yet to knock them out of there but the rollers and the cages took all of the brunt (and the rod big end cage as well). Anyhow the adventure continues....

One thing here is not like the others

I only counted 12 roller bearings in each case of your motor, while the "better" one has 12 on one side and 14 on the other. Did two bearings get digested in the bottom end or did you remove them already?

Dmitriy, that sucks BUT it really isnt that bad in the big scheme of things. I know you are more than up to the task of replacing the bearings and we are all here to help if needed. I dont see any case damage. They cant really go anywhere, must of have been eaten I assume.

Cant imagine each of those bearings being much more than $50 a piece. Rebuild your crank with fresh bearings while you are at it and you will have a good motor for another 10-15K. $200-300 at most plus your labor and time (I know alot of $$ for you or I), but still not horrible.

I assume your fresh piston and cylinder are unscathed? Make sure there are no debris in your oil ports. Not familiar with the KTM motors, but I assume there is an oil pump to be checked as well.

Wow, tough crowd..

Shawn drank with us for a night... so he knows our sense of humor. :twofinger

BTW, great write-up CJ. Too much talent for one man.
Thanks Leo!

Minor details..... :ride Bring it on! Pink slip race? Always wanted a KTM 690. :teeth

Nothing gets by you! :thumbup They were at the bottom of the bin I split the cases in, turns out I was too lazy/sad to fish them all out. Just went to the garage to check and they are there. I would imagine if they got eaten the sound would have been much worse when the bike stopped.

Yep, unfortunately those bearings are like ~$80 each (still shopping around on that front). I 'think' the piston (skirt has a touch of rubbing) and jug survived though I may need a new pin and rings (they look ok so maybe just reused them too after measuring the gap?) There are 2 oil pumps and I'll have to check those out etc. etc... Current step is get the crank all done (need to get a tool to remove what is left of the old bearing races) so that needs to get sent out (need to make some calls on price and delivery times etc etc....) But yea lets hope around $300 covers it.

Meanwhile got the 'other' 640 ready to work on. It will also get complete and through combing at this point. Garage looks like an Austrian assembly line...

Was there some serious bromance happening between Tom, Leo and CJ? :love

I can probably order you bearings via my old job unless it's some magic special KTM specific thing.

Wow lotsa stuff that can go wrong with that engine, but I'm suppose every engine has its own weaknesses. The DR has a few. Hope the piston is still good.
