"Burning Man 2017" Caution: May Contain Burning Man

A couple years ago I heard a guy say, 'I am too old to go into the desert, take drugs, and forget my name.' Sounds about right, I think I am too old to have my mind blown.

It's also a collosal waste of time, energy, and resources. They use tons and tons of wood to construct massive, elaborate structures, then they burn them, wasting all that wood and polluting the atmosphere. Who cleans up all the crap those trustafarians leave behind, anyway?

You're leaving out naked and half-naked chick, a better than average chance to have casual sex and seeing things that you wouldn't see anywhere else.

Then there is the after benefits, they have something to talk about at parties and something that 'proves' that they're artistic and interesting.

You're leaving out the very distinct and high possibility of contracting any number of STDs, hepatitis, fleas, bed-bugs and pubic lice. ;)

Yeah it ain't the 60's anymore.

About the dude in the fire, they had to leave him in there until the structure collapsed enough to safely go in after him. I bet that felt like a long wait for the dude just sitting there realizing this was a bad idea.

Wow, lots of interesting reports. I heard he was pulled out relatively quickly by firefighters and flown by helicopter to UC DAVIS burn center where he was pronounced dead.

From the OP link

“Rescuers had to leave him to allow the structure to fall and provide for rescuer safety before they could go back into the flames to extract Aaron from the debris,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

BRC Dept of Public Works. Apparently they do a fuckin' stellar job of it which is why they are issued a permit again and again.

Burning man seems in no way like a good time. Hot, filthy, crowded, noisy, expensive. Doesn't seem worth it just for the "experience"

It is a GREAT time...

...at the club, where you can find a place to park and get a drink without throwing elbows at the bar.

Yeah, I know, TMZ....

As TMZ reports, "Photos of the incident were captured, and they're pretty graphic. You see what appears to be a long haired man running full force into the blaze ... and then tripping and falling with fire rescuers close behind." If you care to, you can see more photos at the TMZ link above.

I've been out on the blackrock a couple of times shortly after Burning Man has picked up. I've never really seen anything but tracks in the playa dirt, but I'm not out there looking for the site.

I have a contractor friend that went this year and and the last 2 after he and his wife split up, sort of a mid-life crisis thing, but he has the time of his life when he's there...

When I ask him why he goes, he sums it up with "If I buy a Porsche, the ex's lawyers will be all over me, but a trailer loaded with beer and liquor doesn't seem to matter."

Can't argue with that.

DPW does do an amazing job but the reason they keep getting permits is because this is a multi million dollar making machine for just 1 month outta the year. Make no mistake, this is all about money to BLM.

All my friends went this year, and I feel slightly "fear of missing out" but then I remind myself you're camping for a week IN THE DESERT, and that doesn't sound appealing at all.

i have a simple feeling about those that don't understand.

if you don't want to go, don't. i don't want you there.

if you have an interest. you should come. very very very few have regretted it.

its hot. its dusty. its one of the best things to come together on this planet. you truly can not understand it until you've been.

its like having kids and being a parent. ppl say they get it, but as a parent you know your kidless friend has no idea. it may be a ton of work, and it might suck at times, but its the best thing to have happened to you.

I brought my friend for his first time this year. he says its the best thing he's done in his life besides marry his wife. (and he has a lot of accomplishments)

Most 'environmentalists' are only environmental when it doesn't interfere with one of their hobbies (cough, 2-stoke bikes)

I guarantee I would want to stab everyone within the first hour of being there :laughing

Then you probably shouldn't go. :)

Yep
