Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

I was just gonna use it as a backdrop, but the model was like "Ooh, can I climb on these?"

*scrambles up wall*

"Awesome!"

And I can't really post the location, at least not publicly. I'm sworn to moderate secrecy. :shhh

Dude, you are officially the KING of finding photo shoot locations. I bow down to your awesomeness! :hail

Don't tell anyone where that is. You need to guard that site like it's the awesome city of gold that it is. :thumbup

Damn. I want a 1.4 again. 1.8 2 is just too slow with my D200.

<ETA> It had just been so long since I'd used it I'd forgotten what it was! :toothless

With me. No-one else! :twofinger

i've been wanting at 24 1.4 since i played with jeffs a year or so ago. too bad they are super expensive, and you'd really need a full frame camera to take advantage of its awesomeness

Hey Guys,

I wanted to run something by y'all. Are you guys up for a little challenge to get the juices flowing? Zack Arias calles it a GOYA contest. (GOYA = Get Off Your Ass)

How do you guys feel about having a little informal photo contest just for fun? I figure that we can have someone pick a word (typically a word that describes an emotion), then we all go out and try get one good picture that best shows this emotion. I figure that 3 weeks is a good time limit on this.

At the deadline, everyone sends the pics to me, and I'll put them up in the Sink along with a Poll. The winner owns bragging rights until the next contest.

Who is in?

Count me in dude. :thumbup

OK, two more added to the contest:

1. Wannabe
2. TylerW
3. jbleezyj
4. Joebar4000
5. cycle61
6. VeloceMoto
7. BrassPremier
8. Storm Shadow
9. Mosquito
10. Bapistro

Hey Wannabe,

A friend has asked me to shoot her dance group next week. I warned her that I have no experience with dancer, but we're going to give it a shot (with her directing the shoot). Any advice?

Shit, reminds me, I did a shoot at an Indian dance studio a few months back, finally got around to dropping off the disk in person.

I'm kinda slammed with my job right now, only have time for my book project and the odd paying friend - would you be interested in talking to them? Be great practice, and a good 'in' to the Indian community too.

Look up Susmita in my FB friends. I already told her to expect you, but you might want to add a note, 'Ian's photographer friend' to the friend request.

The answer here is that it depends on a bunch of things. When you're shooting dance, it really helps if you understand the specific type of dance that you're shooting. But, it also depends on whether your shooting a performance, or if it's just a photo shoot where you can direct the dancers. I do things very differently depending on the style of dance I'm shooting and the number of people I'm shooting.

If you're shooting a performance with just natural lighting, just spray and pray if you don't understand the dance. If you understand the dance, listen to the music while you shoot. The choreography will follow the music. If you feel a crescendo building, you know that a really good shot will be coming in a few beats.

If it's a directed shoot, I usually ask the dancers to go through the hits and poses in their performance piece, and I take pics of the various poses that I think look good. Each style of dance has things inherent that look really good in a pic. You just have to find it.

As for lighting, if you're using off camera lighting, you need to take the time to help the dancers understand that they need to keep their positions relative to the lights consistent. Or, you need to set up the lights to just shotgun the whole area.

I don't know if that helps at all. I never actually sat down and tried to make a list of things I do with the dance shoots. I just kinda play by ear and shoot what I like. I guess the only thing I recommend is to tell the dancers to warm up for the shoot like it's an actual performance. A lot of dancers just show cold up thinking that it's just a photo shoot. They don't realize that for the pics to look really good, they're gonna need to be working just as hard in the shoot as they would be in a performance.

If you have any more questions, lemme know.

Thanks Aris. Very helpful.

I imagine we'll be shooting under 'performance' conditions, in that their choreographer will direct them around the camera for me. I suspect that I'll be mostly using natural light with some remote flash, but I figured I'd have to wait and see how it looks at high ISO without flash.

That's not what I meant by 'performance' conditions. Performance means that they are performing, and you get what you get. If you miss something, you're screwed. In your case, your friend will be directing them, but if you miss something, you will be able to say, "Wait! Go back to that thing you just did." It's much easier that way.

Even though you're not directing the dancers, you're the only one that is looking through the viewfinder. Don't be afraid to direct the dancers if you see something you like as well. They have their stuff, but if you look through the viewfinder and see that it would be better if certain formations overlapped differently, say so.

For me, a lot of ideas and poses go through my head during a dance shoot, and I'm not shy about asking the dancers to try them.

Another suggestion, when you get a good pic, show the dancers the pic on the screen on your camera. That will make them start to trust you more and get more comfortable in front of your camera. That will also give them an idea of what they look like in the pic. That will also give them the opportunity to critique their own technique and redo the pose to make it look better.

High ISO natural light dance shoots is the reason I bought the 5DMKII. The Xti just didn't cut it for this. Next week, I have a shoot at a professional ballet company rehearsal. They said no flash. So, high ISO and fast glass. But, I am bringing the lights anyway just in case someone wants to hang out for 10 minutes after rehearsal is over... :teeth

OK, boys, I hope you've started to come up with some ideas. Mine is already in the works. If everything goes well, I should have it done this weekend. :thumbup

I can't wait to see what you guys are gonna do. :thumbup

It'll be interesting what all of you will to bring to the table:cool. I'll join you guys on the next go-around. I'm still learning the ins-outs of my D5000 and slowly building up my accessories. Finally got a decent tripod, Manfrotto. This hobby can be expen$ive even if you're just an amateur/hobbyist photog.

How about putting together a photowalk somewhere around the bay area? It'd be great to learn some tips/tricks from more experienced photogs like you guys.

C'mon... pics or it didn't happen!:teeth

-Cheers!

Is it to late to get in?

gosh drat it!

I just realized that I had the perfect picture opportunity for this topic today! And didn't even think about snapping a pic!:mad (well, I didn't have a camera on hand at that moment either)

I'm going to have to get back there and try to stage it...
Argh!

first thing i shot this whole year...
now back to more mw2 and forza 3.

^^^good to see you shooting again, dude.

I learned today that I am such the photo geek now. I can't look at scantally-clad women anymore without trying to figure out the lighting situation that will highlight their best features. Dang...

For example, a buddy sent me a link to the below pic of Lindsay Vohn (olympic dowhill chick). It's a 'behind the scenes' pic of a Sports Illustrated shoot done at Whistler last summer. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was, "Man, I really need to think about getting a beauty dish." I am such the loser now. :loser
