Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

my first shot at night photography

30 second shutter opening, picture taken on old ranch road in san ramon when it was pitch black last night

Off to a good start! Couple of questions...what were your ISO and f-stop settings?

Challenges with night photography, once you've got a solid tripod, are composition and focus. Usually there's some light, enough to compose by, but once in a while it's just freggin black, and you have to either guess or scout your shot in the daytime. I usually bring a flashlight to help the camera get a solid focus lock on an object. Often you'll have to do it manually if the camera won't lock focus in the available light.

And then time. Any exposure longer than 30 seconds is mostly going to be educated guesswork, or painful calculation. Don't be afraid to turn the ISO down to 100/200, tighten up the aperture to F/8 or whatever, and let it sit open for minutes on end.

For example, from a couple years ago. These were something like 10-12 minute exposures, out on Calaveras road. Different trees, different nights.

Guys!!! I have something to share. I just found a cool program that almost instantly converts any RAW file to a jpeg. You can download it from www.rawworkflow.com.

I guess it works by pulling out the jpeg that's already embedded in the RAW file itself. It just converted a couple hundred pics for me in less than 5 seconds. It'll even resize them for you if you want. :thumbup

Good stuff in this thread. Thanks to all for the info and links to other sources.
And since it's not specifically a "moto" thread here's a few from the Rodeo.

I just went through some of my parents old photo stuff and found a Nikon N2020 and a vivitar series 1 70-210mm 1:35 - macro focusing auto zoom for a cannon

anyone want to make me a deal or any chance i could trade it in for a lens somewhere?

I actually have a gear question. Does anyone here have any experience with underwater photography? I was hoping to do a shoot in my pool with my strobes set up above the water. I just can't seem to figure out a way to trigger the strobes from under the water with a camer in the waterproof housing. Does anyone have any ideas?

underwater housing for DSLR is $$$$$$

Nah, I was thinking about something like a EWA Marine universal underwater housing. Still over 300 bones, but it's cheaper than the $3,000 custom housings.

I did some resarch and found out that Pocket Wizards don't work underwater. Apparently water is an insulator for radio waves. Duh...

So, the only way I'm gonna be able to do what I want is to:

1. Get an underwater housing for my camera
2. Rig up a 50' cable (and seal it in the housing) that triggers a Pocket Wizard above water
3. The PW would then trigger all my above water strobes.

Damn, this is looking to be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth. I've got such the pimp idea in my head for a shoot, but the cost and drama to get there really isn't worth it.

So, I guess I really do get bored in these meetings here in Japan. I have a new goal in life. I totally want one of these mugs:

I am not going to rest until I get one, dammit!!!

OK, I just had a weak moment and paid through the nose on one from eBay, but it will be waiting for me on my desk when I get back from Japan. :thumbup

This thing is so very pimp!!!

ive been playing around with flash so much lately, i really wish i had a light meter. and im kicking myself, cause my dad used to have a flash meter, and sold it cause he wasnt using it and i said 'im using digital why do i need that?'

Lenses and CF Cards

I just picked up a 5D Mark II.

Do you have any suggestions where to buy lenses and what CF cards to use?

I heard Sandisk Extreme III is a good card to buy.

I also have Rebel XSi for sale. Best offer wins.
