Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Keeble and Schuchat photography (http://www.kspphoto.com/) will rent Nikon and Canon DSLRs, they have professional outfits. Not that cheap.

KEH is a good place to buy. Photo.net has a classified section that is quite good. I wouldn't buy used from Adorama.

If you are going to rent a DSLR try borrrowlens.com, the prices are far less than Keeble and Schuchat. A three day rental for a Canon 40D is $49, K&S wants $100 a day or $300 for 3 days. Granted K&S rental is a package but even adding the stuff in the K&S package Borrowlens is $108 for 3 days or $36 a day. Thats a big difference and they have awesome service.

You gotta let me try that out sometime. I want wider, but I'm not $$$$$ enough for a 14-24. I'm thinking 17-35/2.8, but looking at other options.

For sure, I may bring it to Skips tonight. That 17-35 would be pretty sweet too, much nicer zoom range and probably less distortion.

They are surely cheaper, but as a professional I wouldn't be relying on their availability/shipping for critical work. For a hobby, I guess they're a very reasonable alternative.

Have you done business with them? I've rented there numerous times, and their availability is at least as good as K&S. Regarding shipping, etc, they are partnered with a couple of local shops so you can pick up in person, if you need/want. They're my first choice for rentals.

UV filters for protection? I do it and paid the dollars for the B/W et al. filters. On a cheap lens, I'm willing to go cheaper (but still not cheap). I just consider it a standard additional cost when buying a new lens.

I agree with the "it's not worth it and it gets in your way" philosophy but take the other approach because I'm abusive toward my equipment. I've had a couple of cases where an UV or Skylight filter saved the lens when a friend -- even a photographer friend -- dropped the camera. Also in my moto crash in the city one of my UV filters bit it. In that case I don't know that I got anything out of it but glass dust everywhere though.

The other sort of case where it's useful is when something gets on the filter: kids' fingers, dogs' noses, mist, road grime... I'm more than willing to stick my camera where it's going to get stuff on it and when it does, I can pop the filter off and keep shooting. 'Course that means that after the fact I have two things to clean, but I don't have to stop shooting at the time.

Anyway, I'm abusive and pay for it. If you're going to use UV filters for physical protection -- or any filters, for that matter -- get the best you can afford.

+1

Also consider the chance that you may sell your glass and though good glass holds its value very very well even with heavy use any slight scratch or damage to the element will lower its value (or any slight damage or scratch). All my lens have a UV filter even the $80 nifty fifty. With a decent filter it will not degrade the image. :cool

There were times I needed a particular lens and it was not available. No big deal as it was not mission critical and it was somewhat my fault for not planning properly (sometimes a job drops in on you and all of a sudden you need a 35mm 1.4L in a couple of days.:laughing)...I think that is what Underdog was getting at. Nonetheless, borrowlens will always receive my business. :cool

It was just a suggestion. As a professional feel free to go to a snobby place and waste money. I don't know if you noticed but thier selection of lenses is quite a bit better than K$S. What do I know I'm just a hobbist.

I do know they have given me great service when I have reserved a month ahead of time and when I have ordered the day before I needed something. Everything I have rented has worked perfectly and they have never given me attitude because I'm a noob. I can't say the same for K$S

I finally got me a sunset shot I find worth mentioning

^^^^

Nice colors!!

I've got the Nikon 200-400 4.0 reserved for next weekend for the AFM races. $80 for Fri-Mon with Calumet. Anyone else plan on going to shoot?

I could probably remake that shot, seeing how I have an F4 and the 50mm and same tripod available :laughing

Oh and I recently found out why I really don't like the strap that came with my F4. Besides it being really tiny and all, it's a canon strap =\ :twofinger

OK, which of you yahoos was that on the bridge on Lawrence?
