Do Harley's Attract More Women?

Yeah, I know. Like, people get so weird when you treat them like they're a commodity instead of human beings and talk about them publicly as if their only purpose in life was to satisfy someone else's needs. Bitches need to learn to toughen up. And make a sammich.

how is anything in my op about making women a commodity or serving my needs, if anything im talking about buying a bike to serve a gals needs

its a proxy for "if you're a dude on a bike, is the image of riding a harley hipper than a sportbike" measured through the barometer of female attention because if guys didnt care about that none of us would be here

hardly like saying women dont deserve equal pay and belong in the kitchen...

This thread just got way to real :Popcorn

you woulda thought i stole someones sword and killed their father...it was all fun and games on page 1 until people got all uppity, i vote mod delete lock thread?

I'd hate to spend a year putting around on a Ninja and find out it should have been a Fatboy

Where did anyone accuse you of those things ?

Your thread premise COULD be construed as humorous, and it could be considered as perpetuating stereotypes..... one thing for sure, it opened the door for people to vent their personal issues with women.

I dunno, maybe she was... just like maybe you're joking about stereotyping women and maybe you're not.... I think the bigger concern is how the thread turned into a medium to treat women like second class citizens.... and being the butt of these jokes gets really fucking old.

The problem is that the question "which bike attracts more women" already makes an unspoken assumption that women are a commodity. You don't care about attracting a specific individual woman, you just want to attract as many women as possible. This implies that you think all women are equivalent, that they are commodities.

Same thing with "female attention". That phrase also makes the assumption that all women are the same. You don't care about any specific woman's attention, you just care about "female attention" in general. That again implies that you think of women as an undifferentiated commodity, not as individuals.

Think also about why exactly you want "female attention". If you're honest with yourself, you'll see that it's about boosting your ego. So your inclination is to use women as objects to satisfy your desires, which really isn't a very nice way to treat people.

I'm sure that all of this wasn't explicitly on your mind when you posted these things and you didn't truly mean it that way, but I hope you can see why many people have a problem when you're talking about human beings in that way. If you still can't quite see it, try to put yourself in the mindset of a woman reading your posts, and see how that might make you feel. It doesn't feel nice to be treated as an object that needs to be manipulated (by using the right kind of motorcycle) into giving you attention, a means to an end, rather than as an individual.

Wow. This thread really snowballed. The original post made sense just as a sarcastic remark about the men who buy Harleys to get women (same could be said about many things). Probably shouldn't have made it much further than there. Anyways, thanks Barf! Always delivers.

:applause

Sure is not easy when people do a bunch of chest pumping to make themselves look all bad ass in the E-world.

Several post here are worthy of :facepalm and :rolleyes but then again maturity needs to be learned.. it just does not happen.

Actually, here, it can just happen. All you have to do is make a rule that says that people are required to treat others with respect. Not any different from probating people for them calling others names.

The crime isn't making the joke, anyways, the crime is not knowing your audience. If you're posting to a public forum with thousands of subscribers, probably best to lay off the rape jokes. (not to single out Karbon here - he totally did the right thing by realizing it was out of line and apologizing - just the easiest example in the thread).

And let's be honest, the people who are most likely to find rape jokes funny are probably those who are either ignorant of the damage done to people by sexual violence or are inclined towards rapist behavior...because having the memory of a personal assault, or the assault of a friend, parent, or sibling is highly unlikely to recall as "funny".

This is your playground, budman - you have the choice to make the environment however you want. You want a more welcoming attitude for women? Back it up with something besides "well, sometimes boys will be boys". The people who are going to flip out over moderating jokes that are exceptionally offensive to women yet also be ok with moderation calling someone an asshole are highly unlikely to be valuable members of the community anyways, because being fine with moderation around calling people an asshole but not being fine with moderation around demeaning women indicates they have a hell of a problem with treating women with respect.

I'm with the OP on this one, I don't think the point of this thread was to degrade or commoditize women in any way.

Kinda sad that one cannot discuss the opposite sex these days without being labeled a sexist/rapist/creep.

Couldn't have said it better myself, so I won't.

I think we can all at least agree that riding on the back can be loads of fun for everyone involved, even on a KLR.

To put it as simply as possible, if you step on someone's foot, you might not have intended to hurt that person. But you did anyways. Same is true here - intent doesn't remove the outcomes, and ultimately, you are responsible for the outcomes of your words and your actions. If you enable a bunch of sexist/rapists/creeps through your way of approaching the conversation, and you ignore that your actions opened the door to that, you're tacitly approving what they do.

No way!!!! This thread is taking heavy fire, we've lost an engine and the landing gear won't fully extend. You ride this one out son!!! Don't you quit on me. Now get back on those controls and see it through. I believe in you.

again :wow i get your point but cmon im just a goob on an internet forum, how PC of a place does one expect it to be? do i need to go patrol posts and complain that shits anti male (because i bet there is)?

heck a lot of people consider motorcycles themselves to be offensive, have you not seen the way the guys on the FNR go through traffic?

if we are going to get that deep into every comment/joke about motorcycle culture then its gonna be totally frigid no?

so yeah you can read all that into it but im being self deprecating in the OP, it should be obvious to anybody that isnt the intention here, if anything in a backhanded way i want to poke fun at harleys

"Damn those women for getting all uppity when someone treats them like shit, next thing you'll know, they'll demand the vote!".

The 50s called, they're wondering if you'd like some signs that display other regressive attitudes, there's a whole shitload just lying around for some reason.
