Do Harley's Attract More Women?

Wow. This thread really snowballed. The original post made sense just as a sarcastic remark about the men who buy Harleys to get women (same could be said about many things). Probably shouldn't have made it much further than there. Anyways, thanks Barf! Always delivers.

that was the idea hahahaha

again :wow i get your point but cmon im just a goob on an internet forum, how PC of a place does one expect it to be? do i need to go patrol posts and complain that shits anti male (because i bet there is)?

heck a lot of people consider motorcycles themselves to be offensive, have you not seen the way the guys on the FNR go through traffic?

if we are going to get that deep into every comment/joke about motorcycle culture then its gonna be totally frigid no?

so yeah you can read all that into it but im being self deprecating in the OP, it should be obvious to anybody that isnt the intention here, if anything in a backhanded way i want to poke fun at harleys

For some reason, this site continues to soldier on despite the fact that you can't call other posters assholes, and yet, it's going to be different if you can't make offensive comments towards an entire gender?

The difference is that the riders on the FNR are people have made a shitty choice about how they ride on the road. Calling them out on that isn't the same thing as insulting someone for being a woman, especially in the context of threatening them with sexualized violence, which is almost always directed towards women.

Basically, if the point was to poke fun at Harleys, or those who ride Harleys to get women, the actual reasonable reaction would have been to do it in a way that actually makes fun of those people, not a lazy effort that could just as easily be interprited as someone being a prick to women.

It's the difference between Andrew Dice Clay and Louis CK.

"Damn those women for getting all uppity when someone treats them like shit, next thing you'll know, they'll demand the vote!".

The 50s called, they're wondering if you'd like some signs that display other regressive attitudes, there's a whole shitload just lying around for some reason.

thats just an apples to orange comparison man, its a joke about the intentions of guys on cruisers, people are now extrapolating what they want to see beyond that

The difference is that the riders on the FNR are people who could go through traffic like that or could act with respect towards other users of the roads. Calling someone out for being a woman isn't anywhere near the same, nor is threatening them with sexualized violence (which is targeted at women the vast majority of the time).

making leaps in the debate here, i would say, i didnt make offensive comments toward an entire gender, and its clear that wasnt the intention, if you get offended in spite of that, then yeah, yes, give me a break

and o.0 wtf now you think im advocating violence against women?!

"HAHAHA ITS STUPID HOW GUYS BUY HARLEYS TO LOOK COOL TO CHICKS"

"OMG YOU 50s PIG! HOW DARE YOU GENERALIZE WOMEN LIKE THAT AND THREATEN THEM WITH VIOLENCE!"

see my disconnect here?

The disconnect here is in who gets to make that call about what is offensive towards women. It's pretty clear from the contents of the thread that you encouraged an environment where women are treated like things - if you hadn't set the tone in the thread by treating women as objects that are transfixed by bikes of a particular brand, it wouldn't have become a place where people posted other examples of women being treated like objects to fit in with the theme you created.

Basically, your thread opens up the floor to treating women like objects. If you wanted to poke fun at Harley riders, or those who think that way, you should try and have decent enough posting that your thread doesn't just immediately devolve into the stereotypical internet objectification of women, and instead pokes fun at those who think that way. At the moment, you're just doubling down on how you've got the right to say whatever you want, which is true, but you're also not free from criticism for encouraging shitty posting.

Asking people to think about what they post is a lot to ask, I know. :laughing

10 years of sportbike riding and i'm starting to wonder if i've been doing it wrong all along

Does everyone on BARF just read stuff literally?

It was, then it turned into why rape is/isn't funny and now we're dwelling on if jdan007 oppresses all women and why

Rape jokes are fucking hilarious when they're pointing out how rapists are terrible human beings. They're significantly less funny when they're at the expense of rape victims. If the potential interpretation of said jokes is that it could go either way, they're shitty jokes and you should get better material.

Again, Louis CK vs. Andrew Dice Clay.

i guess i need to link people to my post in the sink about my relationship to clear that up

ilikefood and Z3n; :hail

Thank You

If you have to use external factors to validate why your behavior isn't sexist or otherwise problematic, you're essentially using the "but I know a woman!" excuse. Being in a relationship with a woman doesn't make you incapable of doing shitty things, anymore than being in a relationship makes someone incapable of being abusive.

Honestly, the biggest problem is that being a racist/sexist is viewed as being the worst thing in the world. We're all racist and sexist in measures, it's impossible to not be in today's society - we're imprinted with too much bullshit from a young age to fully escape it. All we can do is recognize when it happens and try and stop contributing to society's shitty attitudes. The only reason I'm bothering to reply is because it seems like you're not a bad guy, you just said something that had some repercussions for others that you didn't think through, and you've got the potential to understand why that's bad and contribute to the world being a little bit of a better place.

Basically, he's totally wrong - rape jokes do actually support rapists by normalizing their behavior. A non-rapist views a rape joke as funny or offensive, whatever, but a rapist views a rape joke as validation that what they are doing is ok.

I support free speech - but with that freedom comes an equal measure of responsibility for the outcomes of what you've said. There's no freedom without equal personal responsibility.

There is nothing particularly PC about not making comments that imply women are commodity objects, that's just being a decent human being.

Also, it's not about getting "that deep" or reading "all that into it". I just attempted to explain why people might have a problem with your thread. Instead of arguing against that perspective, try to understand it. You really can't have an argument about whether it was reasonable for someone to have a problem with what you wrote. You can't debate someone out of being upset or annoyed. All you can do is try to understand why what you wrote upset people, so you hopefully avoid doing that again in the future. I mean, you don't want to rile people up even if it's unintentional, right?

As I said, you most likely didn't mean all those things when you said them, because you said them without thinking (you didn't "get that deep"). But that doesn't change the fact that people have a response to what you post.

On that note, I accept personal responsibility for offending everybody with my post.
