Do You Mountain Bike?

Downhill women

As I lined up for my run at CCCX last weekend, there were two women ahead of me. When I reached the bottom, I checked their times - the first gal did a 4:07, while the second gal did a 4:18.

Turns out the first gal won the Pro Women class, while the second gal won the Sport Women class. Despite the first gal saying she made a big mistake on her run, she still handed me my ass by over 10 seconds. The second gal, I just barely edged out by about half a second.

Since gals were sponsored by Specialized, I went to the Specialized riders site to see just how bad ass they actually were. I found some shots of the pro gal - the same one that prompted Mr Harpo to say "Damn dude, there's nothing hotter than a downhill mountain bike chick".

With some work, I can see myself doing a 4:07. I don't see myself ever trying some of other things that gal is capable of:

That drop looks like fun and the wall looks killer also

Where are these hinding Mike?

As Ryan and I were driving home, we came to the conclusion that although the event was a great experience and fun; when you consider a $35 fee for all of that work, sitting in lines, then having to throw common sense out the window to ride down some "sketchy" shit as fast as you can, really wasn't all that worth it.

We could have ridden Demo for free and had *more* fun with the same amount of climbing.

With that said, I promptly stated that I will bet $50 the one person who will be DYING to do this stuff again, is Joe. He won his class, and anyone who is winning at something they are doing, is down to keep doing it! :twofinger

With that said, I'm really eager to try an XC race and would really like to ride UC SC. :teeth

PS. Joe, you're a fucking animal. Props to you for throwin it down!

Yo Dukky,
1) Thanx for the props
2) $35? Cheap, compared to a day of skiing
3) Dude, doing well (time wise) was an added incentive but the reason I'm stoked to do it again was that I managed to push myself just a little bit and didn't have to risk life and limb. What will turn me off to this stuff isn't you guys going faster than me, it will be bad falls or injuries :wow

demo this weekend anyone?
Can Do Saturday.
Let me know

Tire Questions - Just bumped into Ian Massey at the gym (the kid that took 2nd place Pro) and he runs (and loves) the Weirwolf 2.3 on the front for all those cccx races. He also said that our (Mikes and mine) usual combo of Weirwolf 2.3 front and Mutano 2.24 is pretty optimum for that place. Good enough for me. :thumbup

I checked the tires he had on that white hardtail when he came over to talk... F/R Mutanos. If that was the bike he actually rode, I don't know.

That's not his race bike. He's sponsored by Marin and rode a (don't ask me the model) gold/yellow 5.5 Marin for the race.

This is the bike he rode in the race with a Weirwolf front.

That drop looks like the NORBA Mammoth National course. I raced it back in 02 or 03. I was a good expert but still got beat by a couple of the pro women riders. Yah, they're hot.

I've seen a few threads on MTBR regarding races @ Sea Otter. None of them are very positive - the consensus is that they're asking too much.

We'll probably go to check it out, but I doubt we'll be racing.

Looks we have some showers on the way, Thursday / Friday / Saturday. Still not sure how the weekend will work for me - I'm trying to squeeze in one day on the roadie, and one day on the trail bike...

We'll see how much water is dumped on us.

I'd like to hit a few more of the wooden stunts @ Demo next time, even though I have no plans to go big like Scott or Ryan. Since wood and water are a bad combination, I may have to put it off.

I raced the DH and DS a few times. (Podiumed in the DH twice)
It's a huge event with a lot of people. The races are short and because of the amount of entrants (hundreds) you don't get much practice and you spend a lot of the day standing in lines. Entries are pricey too. That being said...I always had fun there and would recommend anyone to at least try it once.
I rode the expert XC course for fun on my DH bike. Lots of up and down stuff on sandy hardpack. Some of the climbs were brutal.. think I had to push on a couple short climbs but my bike weighed around 45 lbs.:laughing

Sounds like you have no shortage of DH experience - when are you gonna come out and play with us? And when I say ride with us, I'm actually referring to Ryan (Pakow), Joe (Harpo), and Scott (sjensen). I don't usually ride "with" them on descents - I kinda just go along, point out which to way go, then meet them at the next junction :)

My new "hobby" now is trackdays...only take the DH bike out a few times a year ... but I've been getting jealous following this thread:laughing...I actually went to Annadel with it for the first time in 2 years. Bombed my old favorite DH trail (from Upper Burma all the way down to channel drive) :teeth. I was a little rusty and tucked the front wheel on a boulder senting me for a little tumble over the bars....good times:laughing.

A friend of mine is looking for a 100mm fork. Something nice. Which one of you little parts hoarders has one? Sell it to me NOW!
