nice bike Iload2!

how are downhill bikes when used for trail riding? I'm thinking it would need to soften the front end?

Heavy. I wouldn't want to use one without either a shuttle or a chairlift to get me to the tops of hills.

awww come on mike. its AMAZING training. after i sold the enduro and before i got the nomad, there was a period of 3 weeks where i was riding about 13 miles a day, or every other day on mine. 42lbs. 12-23 road cassette. 38T chain ring and a 6 inch long seat post. If you don't mind standing and pushing big weight/gears around its fine. Esp when you get to the DHs.
:thumbup

Cleared most of $2 hill yesterday :teeth

too bad I lost traction about 2/3 of the way up to to the top of the hill and nearly went over the bars :laughing did get the hard part out of the way though, finally figured out how to get past that railroad tie. I'm all about getting my climb on these days, DH is cool too but for me at least a good climb feels real rewarding.

Next time I'd like to take a side route that branched off of the last fireroad descent we did. It was about 0.3 miles on the right past the gate Here's the plot for it:

Roxy, all the time you've been putting in is showing - your climbing legs have gotten a lot stronger!

Sonny, thanks again for saving the day - I think everyone agrees the cooler you brought was a godsend :)

Cody, you're climbing like a champ. I think I would have hurt myself if I tried any harder to catch you on that climb out. You should try and hook up with us for the next CCCX XC race or even the Downieville XC race. It's gonna be a good time!

I'm glad everyone was able to make it out - looking forward to next weekend!

Thanks Mike.:)

I think I discovered my climbing legs last week, after pushing Canyon Trail in the middle chainring, I realized I had it in me all along.

Thanks to Sonny, he's been pushing me.:thumbup Ih8choo:p

What do you guys think of this http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/687012867.html frame? It seems pretty cheap. I want to start a full suspension build. I want to start buying good parts that are being clearanced out and build something somewhat cheap with good parts. I was thinking if I didn't like the frame I could sell it and replace it with a better frame and keep the good parts. I'm pretty new at this, so I don't really know yet what is interchangeable and what isn't. I like going downhill fast but I like to bike around the mountains too. So I dont want just a downhill bike. Also I have been looking at this http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/16...te-Ace-XC-Frame-w_-Manitou-S-Type-SRL-Air.htm Looks pretty good has ok reviews at MTBR.

The Marin is a good bike, but its like an entry level HD. I'm not going to strip that one just going to ride the hell out of it for right now. I plan buying a frame now and slowly build it up as opportunities for higher end parts for cheaper come up. It will probably take me upwards of a year to fully complete this. I did that with the AR15 I built. I slowly bought parts to build it up. Pretty fun, learned a lot about the rifle and its mechanics. So I hope to learn a lot about bikes by doing this. Sunday evening lets do it, Monday let do that too, i'm on vacation from work for the next two weeks:party

June 8 - Muddy Buddy @ San Jose

July 13 - DH Mtn Bike Racing @ Downieville

EDITED...:)

Judging by your schedule, its looks like your Downieville preride will be the week before the race?:confused...7/5-7/6

No Shuttles Memorial Day Weekend at Downieville

(from the MTBR forum)

Yuba Mountain Transit (new start-up company operating under Special Use Permit from the Tahoe National Forest) will not be running shuttles this Memorial Weekend. instead we'll be wielding chainsaws, mcleods and pulaskis trying to get the tread back into riding shape. we have removed most of the deadfall from the Divides and the folks at High Sierra Motorcycle Club have been busy working on Big Boulder Trail. the high winds and heavy snows took their toll on the trees and the trails this year. as of yesterday you could not reach the intersection of Butcher and Pauley, elevation 5,040'.

riding the trails while the snow melt is happening can create irregular melt and trenching. when humans travel through the snow on top of the trail, it creates a trench that channels the water directly down the trail- this makes more work for us and can destroy a trail tread in a matter of a few days without maintenance.

give us a call (530-289-3010) or drop us an e-mail (willie@sierratrails.org or waynohoffman@aol.com) if you can help us out with restoration work this week or weekend. we'd appreciate it, and it's the right thing to do. we'll provide lunch, BBQ and beer for all that help out, compliments of the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship.

Trails that are open include: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Divides. North Yuba, including the new North Yuba Extension connecting Downieville to Goodyears Bar. Halls Ranch and Fiddle Creek Ridge. Forest City trails are opening up thanks to Forest Trails Alliance. Bullards Bar is ready to go and the lake is perfect for swimming. in the Lakes Basin Grey Eagle Creek and Smith Lake trails are open.

Trails that are still under snow include: Butcher Ranch, Pauley Creek, Big Boulder, Lavezzola Creek, Empire Creek, Craycroft Ridge, Chimney Rock, Rattlesnake Creek, Herkimer Mine, Downie River, Tamarack Lakes, Sardine Lake, Deer Lake, Oakland Pond, Round Lake, Silver Lake, Bear Lake, Long Lake, Mt. Elwell, Jamison Creek, Nelson Creek.

Training for someone with legs, sure. It's gotta be demoralizing for newer riders tho!
