Do You Mountain Bike?

Anyone ridden these trails? What are they like?

http://www.theflumetrail.com/

....VERY high elevation...6200'-9000'

I rode there this weekend as well. The ride itself is pretty lame, IMO. But you can't beat the views and that is exactly what this ride is for. The climb up to the Flume Trail is pretty brutal with something like 5 straight miles of climbing and the last mile being the worst. And the first 8-9 miles is fireroads and the last 3(?) miles is also fireroad. But you guys seem to be in good shape so maybe you guys will make it alright, but the elevation is a factor. I never really understood it until this Tahoe trip :laughing.

Flume is very *pretty*....stunning views...grand vistas....postcard type stuff...but the riding is tame, really tame.....

now, if you went and hit up Mr. Toads Wild Ride...that's a completely different animal altogether :thumbup.....and if you're really into epic riding you can ride the *Punisher*:

there's so much stupendous riding in Tahoe...too many options to list....but FWIW...the Flume is a must do, even if it's a slacker ride...:)

Yeah, I think Joe / Harpo referred to it as a "take your non-rider girlfriend here" ride. For all the trouble it took to get out there, I'm sure he wanted the virtual roller coaster that our other riding destinations provide.

On the other hand, I think the bike course for Xterra Nevada takes us on the Flume Trail - that could be fun. And for the first time in years, I don't appear to have a schedule conflict with it.

Rox, think you'll be able to swim by then?

I've heard about that one - I'll keep my eyes peeled on MTBR for the next group ride that heads up that way :)

Hmm...race is when?

It really depends on my shoulder. It has been 7 weeks since my injury and I'm finally able to get full ROM with normal weight bearing.

Looks like it's on Saturday, October 4th. Now that I think about it, I'll be in San Luis Obispo by then - not sure how easy it will be logistically to make that.

Flume Trail Sux ASS !!!
8+ miles of the nastiest, lamest beach sand fire road climb ever.
Followed by absolutely no Yah Yahs (payoff) what so ever:barf

Many better places to ride. Actually, the only worse place to ride I've ever been was the South Yuba Trail in Nevada City. (just ask Solis)

Don't waste your time.

On the positive, as mentioned, the views are spectacular.

PS. Toads is AWESOME!! So long as you don't get altitude sickness. Then it could be the worst day of your life. 24 miles of hell. :(

^^Toads wasn't open as of last week....I was quite sad...rode 13 miles to get there only to find out that it was closed. :( I would recommend shuttling if at all possible, since that 13 miles to get there is pure climbing and not very fun along with the altitude

Man... am I getting old??? I tweaked my left arm a couple of weeks back on a ride and it's still not 100%. I'm just not healing up as quickly as I use to. When I was 28 yo, I incurred an AC3 seperation R shoulder when I crashed riding in Santa Barbara. Hurt like all hell - but I was back on my "new" mtb in under 4 weeks. Not anymore... As if that weren't enough - I'm allergic to Motrin! Somomabiatch...

Yep, sprains now take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to heal..:(

I also have frequent aches/pains in my joints, back, knees....:wtf

You know, after hitting up one of Doc Wong's free Chiro clinics (free initial eval), I went to see a chiropractor about the sporadic back "spasms" I use to experience. At my first appointment, I felt like it was voodoo magic the guy was doing (felt like my kids playing doctor on dad - "lift arm, ok, lift left leg, ok...") - but after a few session... I became a believer. Back pain was gone and my overall physical state felt like it went through an overhaul. Wierd, but no back pain since...

My elbow on the other hand... grrrrrrr. Ice, ice, baby... Don't get old Roxy, don't get old.

Crashing seems to make ya age that much faster. I want no part of that.

On that note, someone please talk me out of entering a N* DH race.

:)

Do it:teeth

I'm also considering a DH race or 2 at N*:)

I know half the guys I'll be racing against in the Sport 35-44 class, but there's only one entrant in the Beginner 30-39 class. In the Sport 35-44 class, there were 9 entries:

1st Gideon Kaplan - he's on all the same MTB forums I'm on
3rd Kenyon Kluge - former AFMer
4th Paul Wintermute - former AFMer
5th Tomas Mimms - Lisa's business partner that rode Tamarancho with us on that Norco DH rig

The last time I did a CCCX DH race, my time was within a second of Paul's. I know I'm gonna end up heading up there, it's just a matter of when at this point :)

That must be a pretty slow class if gideon won. he is more known for his jumping abilities than his DH speed.

wow, still amazed with the 306 pages of "Do You Mountain Bike"... crazy shit. Very cool nonetheless and especially with how you can now subscribe to this thread through RSS.

How's it going Mike?! I'm planning to sell my bike... but having reservations. Are you planning another "newbie ride", I need it.

Are you going Roxy??

I wanted to make a day run to North Star but this seems much closer

Has anyone ridden this before ?

Feedback on the trails

Thanks
