Do You Mountain Bike?

Good luck!

If I show up on Sunday, I could take 2nd overall in Beginner Men 35-44. Hmmm....

Not if I have anything to say about it

If you are going Mike give me a buzz and we could carpool down

I am close in San Mateo

Now I just need to find a bike :laughing

Are you going Roxy??

I wanted to make a day run to North Star but this seems much closer

Has anyone ridden this before ?

Feedback on the trails

Thanks

Yes, Sonny and I are going. Scott is thinking about it:confused

From the CCCX website:

The course looks to be similar to past CCCX Series final courses. The lower part of the course is used only for the series final and features some extremely fast and railing sections of single track, off camber trails, and fire roads. The finish is in the Bessie Canyon parking area. The upper portion of the course will be similar to other CCCX DH races and this portion has some wide open fire roads leading to bermed turns and switch-backs combined with a few drops to test all aspects of riding. The traction is fast, dry, and slick in most sections. So tire choice and air pressure will come into play to produce a riders fastest time.

With the dry weather you get loose silty gravel and it's steep at the top and starts to flatten out when you reach the bottom.

Judging from the races we've done, the upper portion has always been high speed fireroads, followed by a section of switchbacks and berms, then a singletrack that takes you to the finish.

Even if you smoked me on Sunday, I'll have a higher points total for the season thanks to a 2nd place finish in an earlier round. You're welcome to say what you want - if I don't DNF (knock on wood), you'll have your work cut out for you ;)

The course looks fast and wide open on fireroads, which isn't my strong point. This is part of the reason I kinda want to try the Northstar Beginner / Sport course - I can spin a flat hard, climb at a respectable pace, and am pretty good at carrying momentum and picking lines through rock gardens.

Lemme run it by the girlfriend. Roxy, have you ridden this course before?

Edit - thanks for the description. I want to make sure it's nothing too techy, since Lisa might want to run the beginner class

The course

They've posted it up on the site:

They've mixed the race course enough in the previous races that I sorta have an idea of what to expect.

Someone mentioned that chances are pretty good that the final DH course will include two (2) climbs, one of which is right after the rocky start.

The singletrack fiinish is something we've never done before.

Since Joe pulled me through there, I lo0ve drifting through those turns at 40+ MPH.
Crashing has set us back, but like motorcycles girls get all the advice :rolleyes hence the huge drop in Roxy's race times. :thumbup

The course looks to be pedalers revenge.

With my gearing, I'm coasting at 40 mph. I need to bring that up for DV - I wonder what a good intermediate set of chainrings for a double would run me, how quick / cheap I can get them, and what sizes I should get...

How early are you guys leaving on Sunday?

Coasting at 40mph??:wow I don't know of any reasonable gearing that you won't be coasting at 40mph. I'm pedaled out at 35mph in my tallest gear with a triple front at 44/11.

Yeah, I run out of gear at just under 30 with my current setup. I think my top speed at DV last year was around 27 mph - it would be nice to have a little more than that.

On a different note, I just tried out the "Courses" feature of my Garmin 305 this morning. I get to race myself at Tamarancho whenever I want now - this is gonna be fun!

It's also gonna be really helpful for a pre-run of the DV XC course - I wouldn't know where the hell to go without it.

run a 36-26 dual ring in front. the 36 should be able to get you up most stuff in the bay, but if you do need the granny, you dont have to drop to a wimpy 22.

how many runs do you guys get to practice when you get there? would there be time to switch tires between runs? should i bring my backup wheel set with my other tires ready to go? any idea on course length on this one? ANDDDDD for sure, will there be an extended amount of climbing on the course?

Definitely the answer to your problem.

I only got a few rides on the Nomad with this set up but it works as smoothly as my xtr did, weighs just a tad more than xt and really ups the top speed noticeably.
Oh, and you really can't go wrong for the price. One more, ... Oh, and the seller is a really nice guy. Got them to me in 2 days and only charged me standard shipping.
