Do You Mountain Bike?

You guys/gals did great!. Back when I was racing, this event was huge and there were always sandbaggers in each class. A top five result was always excellent considering the competition. Sounds like it hasn't changed much :laughing Congrats!:cool

Whats the AM? (all mountain??) also what circumstances? Sounds pretty good to me!

All Mountain is the class where they combine your XC and DH times. Scott's 4th place finish was pretty solid - it looks like my combined times would have given me 5th in my class if I were to have entered All Mountain instead of entering XC and DH separately. I never figured I'd be at all competitive in AM, but I may have to give it a go next year. Rumor has it that there might not be a DH only class - if you want to do the DH course, you would have to do AM.

All in all, I had a great time. 3:14:19 for an 8th of 34 in my XC race, after coming back from cramping and two crashes on the descent. 1:05:42 for a 5th of 11 in my DH race against guys with fresh legs who didn't race in XC.

Despite waking up the past two nights at 3 AM dwelling on missing the DH podium by 26 seconds, I don't think I would have traded it for the experience of the XC race - I just love the fitness, challenge, and strategy involved with XC racing, as well as the camaraderie among the competitors. I guess it just sorta happens when groups of people suffer together.

It was super cool camping out with Scotty, Sonny, Roxy, and some MTBR buddies who were kind enough to share their site with us - I'm looking forward to giving this another shot next year!

here's my little race report. stacked pretty hard on saturday b/c of some idiot on the xc course. otherwise. awesome time. gunna be seeing me in spandex more often now. :)

Climbed to packer like a mad man, was told i was 6.5 minutes behind the leaders before pulling into sunrise trail after about 1:13 on my ggps. got stuck behind tons of people on sunrise. spun fine over to Paulie creek. passed people like crazy on baby heads. best was the steepest part, with a bunch of 2 or so foot drops off's in a row. passed 7 people in one fell swoop with a bunch of volunteers yelling "THATS NOT A LINE!!! YEAH!!!!!!" Cramped like crazy after the baby heads, and continued to until the end. Climbed up to 3rd divide without cramping somehow. midway down 3rd divide someone decided it would be cool to let others pass, then try and re-enter the trail directly in front of me. I made a quick turn and tucked the front end, and ended up prob 20 feet down the trail, against a tree. Have some "severely bruised ribs" according to the doctor. face is scraped up. right arm looks like a tiger got a hold of it. knee's are scraped up. right shoulder is having a hard time going above my head. Sat on the ground after i crashed for just over 8 minutes according to the gps. it took me that long to get up. was going 33.9 MPH when i ate it. Fun fact for those wondering, spandex offers little to no protection against rocks in the even of a fall. cruised the rest of the way down. was extremely hard to hold onto the handle bar. The position i had to be in wasn't agreeing with my shoulder. finished with a 2:55? give or take a few seconds. was in 3rd place after the xc.

dh was horrible. wednesday and thursday i was running 49-52 minute times. got a 1 hour flat on this race. legs cramping where i landed on it the previous day, ran/rode up the climb to 3rd. nothing really eventful happened on the way down. holding the bars was difficult with my right side, made it hard to control it over choppy stuff. felt more like i was along for the ride than controlling anything.

all in all it was fun. could have don't better i think if i had actually trained, and had not had the accident during the xc. dunno where i ended up overall. will have to wait for complete results.

Will i do it again next year? At first, i said i wouldn't. After thinking about it, ill be waiting at the computer the day reg opens again. It was def the hardest thing Ive ever done on a bike.

changes for next year will be a full skin suit. It makes you faster. Very Happy
possibly a front derailleur, as a single 36T FUCKING SUCKS when you have to climb from 3,000 ft to 7,000 ft in 8 miles.

Rumor has it that there might not be a DH only class - if you want to do the DH course, you would have to do AM.

I figured they would eventually get rid of the DH only class -- more reason for me to try the XC race next year.:)

Some things I will do differently next year:

More pre-rides at speed - a big part of going fast there requires knowledge of the course so that I can stay off the brakes. I didn't get to ride the course enough beforehand.

Descending with a high seatpost - while most of the fast guys use Gravity Dropper style seatposts, the riders who won the Mens and Womens All Mountain categories had their seats in the high position. I'm hoping it will give my legs a chance to rest and recover on smoother parts of the descents.

Spin class - as much as I enjoy riding outside, I know too many people who kick ass using spin classes as one of their primary forms of cycling training. I figure it's worth a shot.

Improved power to weight ratio - training for Coeur d'Alene Ironman next year, I expect to be another 10-15 pounds lighter than I am now.

If I can prevent muscle cramps, I think I'm good for another 10-15 minutes in the XC race, with another 5-10 minutes by lightening up and building my spinning strength in spin class. Third place in my All Mountain class had a combined time that was 17 minutes faster than mine - I think that's doable :)

Not that I'm on your level but I thought spin class was great at first, until I shortly realized I'd way rather actually be on my bike :) Gotta find a good loop with intervals like West-Eastridge :teeth

Beginner's ride tomorrow 6:00 p.m.,Shell Ridge, Concord. Meet at 6 at the John Muir employee lot, easy ride, or so G says.

Ygnacio Valley Road east turn right on La Casa Via, turn left into the employee parking lot. Go tot the flat lot, not the multilevel lot.

Ok so it was just G and I and it did not end up being a n00b ride. I'm seriously out of shape. 178 bpm average heartrate for an hour. :cry

Did anyone get a trace for D-Ville?

According to your HR data, your max was at 194:green...You're gonna need to change that max HR from 185 to 194.

You gonna make it to Annadel with us on Sunday?:confused

Not sure, lotsa stuff up in the air right now. Maybe you can help me change my HR settings. I'll talk to you about it next time I see you.

Didn't really look that special till I took a look at some of the slower guys vids :laughing

Oh it's special. You've seen this video, right?
