Do You Mountain Bike?

Jimmy! What are you doing up there? I think we're meeting up in front of the gas station around 10 AM on Friday morning.

You're not kidding. So many questions running through my head right now.

- Are we going to be able to find a campsite? Yes, somewhere.

- Do I bring one bike or both bikes? AM, I think the start of the DH might reward it

- How will the descent be on my XC bike? fast, twitchy

- Will I have any problems doing a tubeless tire swap between my bikes on site? YES!! You know about changing setups before a race

- How will the new gearing be on the AM bike?good for high 30s

- Will 120 oz of water be enough in 100 degree temps? not for the XC

- Do I grid at the front and try to stick with the breakaway group in the XC race? 8 miles dude

To exacerbate the situation, I'll probably slam a Monster on the starting line. I'm really, really, REALLY looking forward to this :)

My new project:
Raleigh M80
yes, old school hard tail. I don't have the money to dump 8 -900 bucks on a new mtn bike. So I think I'll just work with this.

New tires, new tubes, new chain. And more than likely going to make it a single gear, free wheel bike. Mostly going to ride medium hills, and work up from there.

Any recommendations (other than throw it in the trash :laughing) would be great.

I bought this aluminum frame new in 1998 :wow :laughing and rode for a while.

I'm looking for new pedals. how are the egg beaters? I've always liked the ATAC ones.

What should I do with the front forks. In reality this bike didn't get abused very much when I first started riding mtn bikes. The original tires were still on it. :laughing

So new forks, rework the forks...just leave them?

thanks

look forward to some trails. :teeth

Bike is all Shimano STX
Headset: Aheadset dia compe (no idea what this means) :laughing
brakes are tek tro: (was thinking of converting to disc brakes, good thing or bad thing ie too expensive?)
rear wheel is a Mustang A-symmetrical wheel.
Tires were Piranha pro's

Sounds like alot of work...but also alot of fun.

Be sure to lube the headset bearings while they're out. There are no seals on that type, so all of the grease is prolly gone. Any wheel/axle/bearing grease should be fine. Also if you get in there, lube the bottom bracket bearings.

I'm partial to Shimano SPD pedals, but it's best to stick with whatever you're comfortable with and be sure to get a new set of cleats if you're aren't in good shape.

Unless the forks have blown seals or internals, I'd leave it alone until you have more $$ to spend. Forks aren't cheap and you prolly won't notice much of a difference in the beginning.

Lastly, stay away from disc brakes until you want to spend even more $$. Not only will you need the brakes themselves, but you'll most likely need new wheels. That alone make the conversion prohibitive. It's often cheaper to just buy a whole new bike.

Hope this helps and have fun. :cool

spend .25 cents to convert your Raleigh into a singlespeed.....spend your $900 on a new hardtail.....totally serious

and eggbeaters rawk......

edit - sorry......just re-read...you do not have the $900 for a new bike....my bad....still serious about the SS though.....it's really, and truly fun.....:)

thanks fellas. so after posting, I got bored...and of course, I don't have much patience. So I rolled over to Valencia Cyclery and got some new tires, new tubes, a new skewer (one of them was rusted out), new toe clips ($10) I'll get more fancy stuff later, new chain and got to work.

cleaned her down. took apart the front rings, cleaned everything. lubed up as much as possible. Didn't take apart the headset or the bottom crank. But I might just take it in to a shop to do that, as I'm a noob with wrenching on those parts, and don't want to fuck anything up.

Got the wheels trued as they were way off.

took the climbing bars off, and voila.
New tires, new tubes, new toe clips, chain, cleaning = what you see in the pic.

I think I'll stay away from disc brakes. I'm no where near needing them. As for the single speed. I figure I'll get the adapter kit and then try it out.

Either way the 8 speed rear works fine. I was worried that it would be gone after 8 yrs of sitting. It's not bad. The front fork feels good. gave it a little extra height and it doesn't bottom out. At first it was bottoming out and hitting something.

Now where is Jeremy?! :teeth :laughing

again, thanks for the advice. cost: $105 for all parts/tires/tubes, etc. bought a new pump ($31)as the old one is shit.

New brake pads ($25), but I think the dude gave me road bike pads. they're very thin. and the ones on the mtn bike are super thick. meh. I'll figure that out.

Bap, I'd be so down for it, but I have to work. :( 7pm. I'm gonna go ride with Jeremy on Monday thru GGP and see what he has. :laughing :later

but I'm down for some mellow starter runs. Now, for some protective gear. I don't want to end up with an open wound like someone I know. :teeth :laughing :later

Call me dude. What time are you guys planning on riding in the city? I'll bring my bike in to work :)

Hey Bap, I'll give you a call. Not sure what time we are going riding. I guess it's up to Jeremy, but I figure it won't be early. What time are you available?

I'm off the next two days.

TLD D2 carbon helmet

So, I finally got around to checking out my gear since my Northstar crash on June 14th that broke my right collarbone.

Aside from some pretty kick ass scratches on my '08 TLD carbon, I found that it's cracked. Bummer. TLD SE moto helmet here I come.....

My Downieville short report

TWENTY SIX SECONDS OFF OF THIRD PLACE IN THE DH RACE AT DOWNIEVILLE FACK FACK FACK!!!

P7130092.jpg

Part of me is flustered for blowing my chance at a DH medal by frying my legs in the XC race beforehand (the rest of my class was DH only and had fresh legs for the race). The other part of me wouldn't have wanted to pass on the experience of the XC race for it - that was something else.

Details to come later...

Thanks Nick! It was me, Marco (Zen Turtle), Mat (Michigan Mat), Roxy, and Sonny camping together at Wild Plum, and your name came up in a few stories of crazy endurance rides / races :) The whole weekend was a great experience.

Man, I can't stop thinking of what I could have done with fresh legs. I had zero legpower on the flat part of Butcher, the climb to 3rd divide (small ring in the race, big ring during practice runs), and the climbs on 1st divide.
