EBike Bicycle do you have one?

So, ever since I posted in this thread my internet travels are jam packed with electric bicycle ads.

Anyone else?

Sounds like you need some privacy add-ons.

Also, if you're using Chrome - stop. Switch to Firefox.

I'm still pedaling the old fashion way. Like mentioned, I noticed that ebikes are banned in some areas.

If I had a ebike I would consider "poaching" with all the lights covered up. You would have to ride slow up hill by folks and sing a song to hide the motor drone sound. haha.

How hard is it to just pedal and ride the bike like normal, to fit in, if you spot an officer that could site you? Most of them don't look much difference at a quick glance than a normal human powered bike.

Banning them in certain areas seems hard to enforce, unless I'm just being oblivious to some glaring problem.

On Specialized e-bikes you can turn the motor off. A tech in Sports Basement in the SF Presidio did not know my bike was an e-bike until he saw me switch the motor on. Certain models are quite stealthy.

I just can't wrap my head around paying the prices these e-bikes go for...

The cities some of y'all live in, I get it, for practical reasons. Where I am, e-bikes are nothing more than the latest fad and a huge headache for the Karens of the community that complain about them constantly. I'm shocked parents buy them for their kids, as much as they cost.

Jimmy's is $2299 which isn't bad in my view and prices are coming down all the time as is weight with the lightest weighing less than 50lbs already.

you can easily spend over 7k on a pedal mountain bike. Only looking at 1-2k more to make it electric. Premium mountain bikes sell for more than motorcycles.

I'm aware of the prices mountain bikes and other pedal bikes can get up to. I have a friend with one of those super expensive road bikes that are so light, you can pick it up with a finger. But that's a full on competition machine they use to train for races. Yes, premium bicycles are pretty expensive like premium anything else. But when we're talking about e-bikes, there's a disconnect for me. It's not a premium anything. It's a tool of convenience, as many people use them for.

I really don't understand spending upwards of $2500+ on an electric bicycle.

I know in mega-metropolitan cities it makes sense for a number of reasons but the prices still seem ridiculous to me. And some of them reach into the 4, 5k range? For a bicycle? That's in the same price bracket as small cc motorcycles you can find on craigslist all day. I don't get it.

I bought a powered hub wheel for my ancient MTB for $99 on eBay. The kit came with everything, including regenerative braking, power assist, and a tire. It only took about an hour to bolt on the bits I wanted.

I did have to buy batteries, which I also found a great deal on surplus hoverboard packs - 5 packs for $120.

It screams at 24MPH and range is ~25 miles with the packs I got.

The parents might have an $11k or a $17k watch so.. probably don’t look at the large bills the way you do ;)

Two or three people in this thread are 58-60+ so forget that, they should get the pedal assist whatever they want.

Now Just if the Dude is a 35 young whipper snapper .. nah.. yeah, maybe an ebike is lame ;) get a regular one :laughing :twofinger Kuro and the rest of nextdoor are watching out for you!,!

- lives in a city with hills, no ebike yet. ( For more than one or even two reasons. )

At 64 and with a MB and Road Bike one day I'll get an e'bike to be able to get the same level of exertion but be able to go further without over doing it.

At least that's the plan and my focus will be on "assist" and good pedaling action via a quality crankset and reasonably low wait for the bike.

The longer I wait the less I'll pay and the better the technology will be.

Interesting. Might PM you about this.

I'm sure that's part of it.

Yeah, my purchase price was $1,999. Apparently, Sondors introduces new models with a lower price, and then raises it (they've done so previously with other models).

This will be my first e-bike. I like that the Sondors is mid-drive, and with good range. The weight does kind of suck, but oh well.

Well think of it this way. You have 2k regular bike. It has certain level of components, and carbon. You take that and add a hub motor to it with all the redesign to accommodate it and battery. So now you have 3-4k e-bike.

I get that. I'm just not jiving with the price point. Why not just get a cheap scooter or some other moped type vehicle that costs a fraction of the price?

I'm not trying to be a hater of e-bikes. Just not getting the willingness to pay so much money for one of these when there are other options to fit the need most people seem to buy them for. This wasn't even an issue for me when I started recognizing them as a 'thing'. Thought it makes a lot of sense. Until I saw the prices.

If I'm still not really 'getting it', I'm open to that discussion to try to understand.

OP here. Original poster, Old peddler or Old person. All fit:twofinger

Good discussion here. I want an Ebike to take with my class B van. Also north of 70 with bad knees. Want to stay around $1500 price point as I need two. If I want a motorcycle I would put the S1000XR on my Kenyon trailer:teeth. Ebikes will ride on a hitch mount.
