EBike Bicycle do you have one?

just be aware that mid-motor ebikes have gear noise, which gets old fast.

Hub motor bikes do not.

At least at modest power levels. My bike is mid motor, wife's ebike is rear (hub) motor.

It's all relative. Everybody has a different fun budget.

I get that. I'm just not jiving with the price point. Why not just get a cheap scooter or some other moped type vehicle that costs a fraction of the price?

I'm not trying to be a hater of e-bikes. Just not getting the willingness to pay so much money for one of these when there are other options to fit the need most people seem to buy them for. This wasn't even an issue for me when I started recognizing them as a 'thing'. Thought it makes a lot of sense. Until I saw the prices.

If I'm still not really 'getting it', I'm open to that discussion to try to understand.

One you can take on various mix use trails, and public transportation, other you can't. Also even with e-bike you can still get a workout.

For example when we go in to office I want to get an e-bike to commute to work once or twice a week. It's 20 miles each way, and most direct lights free route is through various mix use trails. Can't take scooter on those. I can also put it on my bike rack and take it to work on Friday, right back after work, on Monday ride to work on it,and take it back with me.

I can ride all over the trails in Pacifica and could session features without exhausting myself getting back up. I'd need to own a truck and drive at least an hour to Metcalf to ride a dirt bike. Emtb's are really close to a true dirt bike experience with way more accessibility and utility.

Beach cruiser you aren't gonna pedal? Then sure, scooter. Maybe that's how you're looking at it?

Exactly what UDrider said above. Try to take that scooter (Vespa)on closed streets or parks,..which are open to bicycles.

...
I've realized that a possible reason of "not getting it" is if one lives somewhere where all roads are built with only cars in mind and there are no bicycle routes or closed streets or trails.

Then just ride a normal bicycle.

Part of this is because the regulations on E-bikes are still in flux. But I feel it won't be that long until they are enforced the same as other 2 wheeled vehicles. And when that happens... there will be almost no point to them.

Again, I'm not trying to just be a detractor here... And I 100% acknowledge that my experience of E-bikes around town is mostly entitled kids in my community. But the price of a fucking first car for a teen? For an e-bike? They'd rather have an electric bicycle over a car? I know many of you use them for very legit purposes I agree with. But they still seem so expensive for what they are. A bicycle you don't have to pedal, or pedal less. Also because I'm talking to a bunch of folk who ride motorcycles who understand the convenience of 2 wheels vs 4.

My bias here is very obvious and I'm not pretending it isn't.

Stop obsessing over the top-of-the-line prices. Not only are you in/near a high priced zip code (so you see a lot of flashy rides), there are plenty available much less expensively than what you're listing. If you're not into electric bikes enough to discern brands or models, you can hardly tell garbage from glamour as they're riding by.
I have a motorcycle and I didn't want another smaller one, I wanted a bicycle that will allow me to go much further than I normally would. My commute is about six miles but I have almost three hundred feet of elevation change along the way. Riding a regular bike takes the fun out of commuting so I bought a leccy bike. It stung dropping a grand but it's worth it (to me) to be able to stay somewhat in shape by occasionally riding it to work. Even though it's electric I use the pedal assist the entire time so it's closer to spending twenty minutes on a stationary bike than riding a twist-grip moto as a cheat.

I'd take it to SF in a second; ain't no way my lady and I are in shape enough to ride around the city all day and deal with the hills on a regular bicycle. The motor assist makes it enjoyable instead of a chore.

Kuro, it sounds like you have a problem with who you perceive as entitled rather than ebikes. These people may very well be entitled but thats not the bikes' fault. I don't see anyone under 25 riding ebikes where I live. That demographic is all on One Wheels and electric skateboards.

I do see adults 25 and up riding ebikes. I'm not one of them but I love cycling and own several regular bikes. Its great that ebikes allow more people to ride. Thats more people who will support and use additional bicycle infrastructure (trails, protected bike lanes and some decent goddamned bike racks) which all win-win-win as far as I'm concerned.

If you don't plan on a lot of deep sand and snow, then I would avoid fat tires. Standard MTB tires will do all else just fine. Those big 'ol wheels are heavy and the handling suffers for it, especially at very low speeds.

Kind of like big aggressive knobbies on a dual sport that only rides dirt car roads and suffers for it on the street. If you don't REALLY need it, don't accept the down sides.

Sadly, no electric bikes are allowed on MidPen trails here in the south bay.

The MTB forums are filled with a bunch of e-bike hating bitches who will tell you otherwise, but they are allowed if, upon being asked by a LEO, you verbally state that you have impaired mobility, and that need seems credible (e.g, the LEO didn't just spot you landing a 6 foot drop off.) It's all in the midpen mobility device guidelines (same for EPRPD.)

If my experience with ebikes was a bay area experience, I'd probably feel differently. You say you've don't see anyone under 25 riding e-bikes, I never see anybody over 25 riding them.

I'll come off it. Don't wanna derail the thread anymore than I already have. As I said before. I'm not shitting on anybody here who has one.

ebikes are amazing. good for the planet, lots of fun, quiet/respectful of other infra users. ebikes are going to be absolutely everywhere in 5-10 years.

The ebiker hater (just to be clear Kuro, I don't think you are a hater so this isn't directed at you) I see most often are fragile ego types; people that have a fairly half baked notion about what's fair and right, and want YOU to know about it. It's a particular infection among mountain bikers, that flairs up when ebikers whiz by them on the uphill.

So, ever since I posted in this thread my internet travels are jam packed with electric bicycle ads.

Anyone else?

Circling back to this, yes. Maybe I should have stayed out of this thread. I'm seeing all of them, now.

Skynet gonna Skynet...

There are worse things that can happen to someone, than being encouraged to buy a bad ass bicycle :cool

The people I typically see on ebikes are fat fucks that otherwise couldn’t make it up the hill, dressed like a wanna-be enduro-bro with every pad from the POC catalog, a full face helmet on a cross country trail, their music blasting from their camelback that looks like it’s ready for a 3 day overnight trip... not that I give two shits. :laughing
The hate they get is probably more for their behavior than what they ride, is it really that hard to pass in a courteous fashion?

Don't sleep on the Ariel Riders

I just received my Ariel Rider 52V XClass,
https://arielrider.com/products/x-class-52v

... and it is SO FUN!
It's not really for exercise, but you certainly can pedal if you want.

For the money, it's an amazing, fun "not-a-motorcycle."

Very cool, though I'd go for a bicycle first kind of e'bike.

Bet that thing goes almost as fast as my first Moto.

CB50 in Belgium.

About 45mph.

My ebike does 35mph,... and at that speed, it sure seems like some armor should be necessary. Initially, I felt like wearing some enduro-shit might look goofy, but when you're on the thing,... it definitely starts to make more sense.
