Elon Musk: cars you can drive will eventually be outlawed

And if the latest security patches failed downloading, you'll have to walk :laughing

We will have other problems than the boredom of self-driving cars by then ...

With the number of dipshit drivers I encounter daily, I'm all for it. Add merging a single lane to any bay area freeway, instant clusterfuck. Maybe we needed car shaped blocks to play with in preschool. People generally suck at driving.

True. Taking timing into consideration, the first fully homologated, fully legal, fully insured, and really 100% self-driving production car is still 5-10 years away. And it'll cost a mint and it'll be like the S Class or similar. From there to a 3% fleet, which is today's hybrid penetration, it'll take another 25 years. From there to either be "discouraged" by insurers or be banned by law, it'll be at least another 25 years.

In 70-100 years from now, "your" grandchildren will have much bigger problems, notably changed climate, warmed planet, peak oil in full swing, and exploded population. The possible upside will be that self-driving may lessen further problems. TBD.

Teh point of the self driving cars is not safety. It's alternative mass transport. The freeways are failing as a means of commuter transport, and will only get worse. When you smart stack, you have cars at close intervals data linked and programmed to go the same speed and distance. It's the future, like it or not, if we keep going this way.

i'm assuming this only works well if most cars are auto-driven and follow the same "smart stack" protocol.

for example, if half the cars are driving by people, you'd have too much variation in driving patterns to gain much efficiency?

The future will be smart cars only on most or all of the freeway. Maybe one lane for person driven. Or to start, the fast lane for smart cars only, with a $10,000 fine and six months in prison for using it without smart tech. Something along those lines.

Though the way CA is going, there's a good possibility our population may be dropping as we continue to run out of water.

I'm not getting too bent out of shape about it. Shouldn't we have flying cars by now? They've only been predicting them since the 70's 1917 and the Curtiss Autoplane.

Who crowned Elon Musk the messiah

Fixed because I'm a douchecanoe

I'm holding out for flying motorcycles.

If you believe this shit- who do you think pays $35,000,000 for a car? Do you think a member of the banking mafia/the man who owns all the real estate /Illuminati would allow some urine-ventshaft like Musk to decide that they couldn't enjoy the profits of their labors?

So while I strongly dislike it, he is 100% correct. Eventually humans driving cars will be outlawed. Just so we are perfectly clear, the amount of people injured and killed by cars every year (around 34,000 deaths in 2012) grossly, horrendously, overwhelmingly outnumbers the number of people killed and injured by Firearms (around 9000 deaths in 2012) and look at the debate over Firearms, which are a constitutionally protected right, unlike driving Cars. To keep that in perspective, while there is no completely accurate database currently for how many cars or firearms are currently in the United States it is common believed by agencies and experts who study such things that there are MORE firearms in the United States than Automobiles. When autopilot becomes a grossly safer system of transit (which it will) it will become mandatory.

Not only will it be mandatory, it will be the preferred method. It will probably only take 20 years beyond when the first production cars roll out that new drivers, ie teens, will have no desire to want to drive, as the entertainment capabilities in autopilot vehicles will destroy the desire to drive them. Not to mention that human nature always resets to what is easier. It will be easier to not learn to drive, while still maintaining all of the freedom that mobility provides.

Meh, same thing happened to horses. You can't ride a horse on the freeway, but that doesn't mean people who enjoy riding horses can't do it at all anymore.

Horses, are still legal on every road, including highways. Freeways, (somehow) are a different matter. If I understand a 1940's ('30's?) Supreme Court decision, freeways should be legal as well.

Of course, it takes a supreme act of Big Balls, or stupidity to do so these days, but hey. I see bicyclists on highways all the time. :D

Who does he think he is, the iROBOT writer guy?

Asimov
is dead. Long live Asimov! :hail

Elon is kinda full of himself.........like he thinks he's a "visionary" & shit

Elon, as I've said before, is repackaging 1960's Sci-Fi as his own ideas, and the news corporations, are eating it up. Hey, maybe it's 1950 again! Flying cars for everyone! :p

I can actually see this happening. Not just entertainment for teens though. Imagine how much productivity will increase if adults can squeeze in an extra 2 hrs of work during their commute. Whether this is a good thing or not is up for debate.

And your option would be to walk / bike ( if that's still legal ) .. or take public transit driven by another robot. :thumbup

Elon Musk needs to go to hell. Or prison. Huckster scumbag who's somehow managed to get all the rich tech assholes to swing from his nuts.

he's doing everything they accused preston tucker of, but i don't think a model S will ever be as cool as the torpedo was

This dude has the public totally fleeced. The media loves him for some bizarre reason. :wtf

Yeah, at least the Torpedo will always be cool and collectible. Too bad they made more than 50 Model S cars. :laughing

Hyperpoop... gimme a break. Non-starter. I don't buy what this guy is sellin', literally and figuratively.
