Flat Track Racing Mega Thread - INCLUDES SPOILERS!

Best to find any video of the Troy Bayliss Classic will be FlatTrackLive on Facebook. FOX Sports in Australia has produces a tape-delayed show of the event the last two years but I don't remember if I was every able to find that program online.

promoter's insight into why The Indy Mile is NOT on MotoGP weekend:

".....The Indy Mile date change marks a departure from previous years
when it was staged on the Indianapolis MotoGP weekend.

That weekend has been moved up another week for 2015, creating a date
conflict with the Indiana State Fair and ultimately resulting in schedule change.

The July 11 date allows for more control of the Fairgrounds during the Indy Mile,
opening the door to additional fan experiences, motorcycle parking
and more ticket options such as infield viewing.....

.....We are pleased to announce that we are taking a more active role
in Flat Track.....We are working hard to announce more in the coming weeks
....."

Honda NS750 flat tracker - backstory

".....Herewith, the tale of the Honda NS750 flat tracker.....

.....What didn’t make any sense at all was anyone at Honda
looking at their CX500 and saying,
“We’ve already got a V-Twin, let’s race it”.....

.....The accepted wisdom has long been that the NS was a flop,
and that Honda’s riders had their asses handed to them
by guys on Harley-Davidson’s XR750;
the one exception was [San Jose & Circle Bell's] Scott Pearson’s win
on the Louisville half-mile.....

..... I sought out Jerry Griffith, who chopped and turned that
CX500 motor to create the very first NS750 prototype.
Jerry was the hub of all of Honda’s factory efforts in GNC flat track.
He did everything from building motors to managing teams.
He conceived the NS, and then convinced Honda to build the RS –
which was a winner.

After talking to him, I realized that the NS’ reputation as a loser
was an oversimplification.....The 500 had no power, it was at least
10 mph down on top speed; it really wasn’t competitive at all.....

....."I think it ruined Jeff Haney’s career. He had tons of talent,
but he got to the point where he had no confidence in it.
I kept telling Jeff, 'have patience,' but he was just a young kid
....."

The California Flat Track Association (CFTA) has a put together an impressive number of items for a silent auction to benefit injured AMA Pro Flat Track racer Jethro Halbert. Halbert suffered a head injury at the Calistoga round last September.

The auction is going on right now through Saturday at 11:00pm Eastern time. Items include ticket packages to AMA Pro Flat Track races across the country, some very impressive collectables such as Scottie Parker's helmet from his first AMA Championship, autographed photos, number plates and posters, rider instruction, race entries and more.

List of items for Jethro Halbert benefit auction.

as a KY/OH/IN/PA survivor from "The Golden Age" of flat track,
I resonate with this Midwesterner's good fortune [excerpted from an ADVRider thread],

".....applaud the promoters for taking the risk of a finding another date for The Indy Mile
and adding The Du Quoin Mile to the schedule.

That's four Mile races relatively close proximity to each other between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Hopefully the Midwest fans respond and eat it up. Lucky bastards already have the Peoria TT
....."

true that

Ronnie Jones named Flat Track senior Director

this is good news, as there are limited choices for that role:

the controversial Mike Kidd [frequent & recent public screwups]
the dependable Steve Morehead [already has an AMA Pro role]
the dynamic Ronnie Jones

Chris Carr might also be a good fit, but he's too wise to play.....

As much as I have misgivings about DMG, they do seem to hire good people for Flat Track. Looking forward to the Ronnie Jones era.

news!

dunno if it'll even happen, much less exactly when [this summer] -
UK's "Sideburn" mag is looking to promote a fun event up at Castle Rock

Sideburn is great! Gary Inman has been a force of nature in raising the profile of flat track on the other side of the pond. :thumbup

This thread is just what I needed, I remember my brother racing on TV in 58&59 at Ascot and the only thing that I wanted to do was to race flat track!

But many things got in the way, but in 1979 I got a chance to run a bike shop in Idaho and wouldn't you know it one of the guys in the service area was a flat tracker and then it started, Boise was a crazy place turn one was almost a wall ( the compacter -roller would have to be cabled to the mountain ) but I got to tune and finally ride, we had a TT 500 with a cam- carb- pipe and all the tools needed.

In 1980 I got to ride an XR 750 for three laps SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!

It seemed like I was shutting it down a half mile early it was a 1/2 mi track!

So this year I will attempt to get to the track.

Mike Kidd's not letting any grass grow:

Kidd Developing "Scramblecross"

".....creator of the AMA National Arenacross Series says,

"Arenacross was created to fit the gap between outdoor motocross and Supercross.
I feel Scramblecross will the fill the gap between today's high speed
technical motocross tracks and cross country
......"

".....He is planning on racing select AMA Grand National Miles
on the 2015 schedule, starting with the Memorial Day weekend
Springfield Mile, racing a Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Ducati,
hopefully he says with backing from Ducati.....

.....“I want to have a chance to race against the best.....
then hopefully start a Grand National-type series here in Australia.....

.....I want to win a Grand National Mile. That’s the goal
....."

^^^ This would be so cool. I hope it all comes together and I can see him race.

FT is back at DelMar this weekend. damn, i wish i had known about this sooner. its gonna be hard to convince the gf to go on V-day.

Now if Hayden would come back, THAT would be awesome. Two world champion road racers slamming it on a mile, only in America!!!!!!

All Hayden needs is a mile win and he's in a very select group.

Admission is only $10 and look at the line-up for this weekend: Lots of TOP PROS are expected, including Bryan Smith, Henry Wiles, Mikey Rush, Sammy Halbert, Stevie Bonsey, Nick Armstrong and Kayl Kolkman.

All the restaurants will be crowded with slow service. :laughing
