Harley Davidson to release an Electric Motorcycle

Actually, Tesla uses old-tech, completely off-the-shelf Panasonic batteries that are identical to the ones you put in rechargeable LED flashlights. Here is the exact product that goes into a Tesla battery:

I know Elon Musk has a cult around him, but sometimes it helps to cut through the bullshit.

I can second this. The batteries themselves are 18650s. There's thousands of them in a battery pack. For something as light as a motorcycle, there wouldn't need to be as many.

One major thing Tesla has going for it is the technology they've mastered in battery management and harnessing the AC induction motor, which is very efficient, but hard to use. Every other major manufacturer of EVs use DC brushless motors.

Lou, to rebut your claim that EV manufacturers should use lead acid batteries, you need to understand that the way the battery works is a very important part of the design. Lead Acid batteries can't recharge as quickly as Lithium Ion, and they can't deliver enough current (or handle enough current through them) to be very useful for an EV. At max RPM, the battery system is delivering a massive amount of power. To deliver that power with Lead Acid batteries would be heavy and expensive.

Back on topic: I think HD is doing a smart thing. I'm worried they won't get a response great enough to move to production with a 100+ mile range bike, though.

And did anyone notice the hilarious sounds the bike makes? I guess they're still focused on making loud bikes, just a different type of loud...

I saw the bike on the news tonight, it looks pretty cool to me.:thumbup

Regardless of range, or who makes it, I will budget $20k to purchase the first eMoto that organically sounds like a Tie-Fighter.

:laughing Daniel. The sound of the Zero FX is pretty neat. Takes some getting used to, that's for sure. Not exactly a tie-fighter, but definitely interesting.

You know what the fucked up part about all of this is? I leave to NY Sunday for work, but have not yet been able to budget some time on Wednesday to go ride the new H-D. I'm legitimately trying though. If I get a test spin on it, you can all bet I'll share photos and what it is like on this thread.

Edit: I just mapped it and my hotel is only 2.5 miles from the H-D event.

Nice. Keep us posted if it lines up and you're able to give it a try.

How do I get on your ignor list?:dunno

Really? You've been here for 4 years, and You aren't tight with members that know how to do it? :rofl

You're on my ignore list...I think your question is about making your own ignore list, with me on it.

Or how is it I reply to people that are on my ignore list...
Well I do a butt load of things, that others can't manage to do...I'm Lou the Magnificent. :thumbup

Yeah we'll have to live vicariously through you for many months or however long it takes them to get out here. Because god forbid H-D make focus group #1 the biggest potential customer base.

I honestly thought the same thing. It would make more sense to make SF stop #1. Oh well, I just hope I can work it out to at least go see it.

Should I take a helmet on the plane with me, or will they have loaners there? I figure I can just ask some other rider in the area to borrow theirs for a test ride if I get one.

:thumbup Thank You :thumbup

Another little item..Tesla, is a hybrid, isn't it? That is a car with a small gas engine that does two things, moves (as much as it can) the car, and runs a generator that charges the big battery in the car, that runs a (on demand) Electric motor, that combines, and assists the gas engine...And keeps you going.

Any Motorcycles that do this? Not holding my breath, till I hear of one.
And not buying a motorcycle that will leave ya stranded, either.

I'm battery everywhere. My power tools are all battery, and those tools include Lawn mower, chain saw,
pole saw (small chainsaw on long pole for tree limbs), weed eater, And...not being on the power grid, bank of batteries that store the excess from the solar panels day, for powering my home made motorhome/motorcycle shop,garage..
into the night.

Do you even need to wear a helmet in that state? :later

JFC, no, the Tesla isn't a hybrid.

For those who want to hear the noise - it's not quite tie fighter, but it's close. This one of their racebikes has the same controller, same batteries, and same motor as the street bike, and sounds basically exactly like it:

Also :laughing at buying a motorcycle that "won't leave you stranded", as if gas bikes are infallible machines that never break.
