I want to run a marathon. (The running thread)

So, i have been training for 3+ months now with a restricted diet and results have been phenomenal. Dropped 20lbs (at 163lb now) , average speed went up to 8:30/mile and HR is stable.

However, since the last 2 long runs i have started experiencing ITB pain. The last one was after a 11 mile run (with 1 break). I was feeling the pain but never experiencing an ITB pain symptom before; i did not stop. Come home (and i would usually i ice both legs/knees/shin for 5-10 mins) pain started building up... It was excruciating after an hour and I had to take pain meds.

Gave a break of 4 days and started running. 4-5 mile runs are fine. But, today during the 9th mile i felt my right leg started getting heavier. I immediately stopped and walked back. Pain started in the evening and as we speak, the outside of my right leg hurts [not as bad as the first incident]

I am planning to go back to FleetFleet tomorrow and show them the pair of shoes i purchased (if i need a support). Over phone they advised i should start using a roller and/or an ITB band.

I am signed up for Kaiser half-marathon on Feb 2 and i am now tensed if i can make it.

Any other suggestions?

Can anyone please suggest a public track around Fremont or Redwood City area for intermediates and tempos? Its kind of inconvenient on the street.

Yea, go to your local high school track. Weekends at best. Fuck that your a tax payer. It should be opened, no chain locks. If so climb that 3'6" fence. Cops come, which I doubt. Your a tax payer. Your money is paying for this shit.

How do you guys deal with ITBand issues? I had my shoe checked and running pattern checked and they said i am fine. Gave me a roller to massage before & after which helps ...

But, this constant nagging pain of ITBand during long runs is bothering me ... :(

Any suggestions?

btw - who else is signed up for the Kaiser Permanante Feb 2 half-marathon?

I see a lot of runners stretch their legs by swinging them forward-and-back, and side-to-side. I am guessing that swinging side-to-side helps to loosen/stretch the hip flexors and ITB. The foam roller has worked well for me.

Doing a half marathon in Salida, Co. mid March. I've done the full marathon there, and it kicked my ass. :laughing the half is supposed to have some great single track though. plus, lots of beer, and killer pizza, post run, and well...shit, it's Colorado! :smoking :teeth

I should start training.

What an eventful day at the Kaiser SF HalfMarathon today ! ... In my mind, i wasnt expecting this big of a turnaround. Specially, in today's weather :wow ... It was cold with freezing wind. The rains were piercing... Hands and feet were numb.

I managed to pull the ITB again :( at the 5th mile. I stretched well before the race (almost 30 minutes) and this never happened to me in my training at such short a distance. It was so bad that i had to walk over a mile. I was dejected that i may not be able to finish the race.

Luckily the knots untied just before the 7th mile and i was able to put on a decent pace till finish. My goal was under 2' which i could not meet. Ended with a 2.15.xx

Anyone has suggestion what i can do to strengthen my ITB or prevent these sudden pulls?

YES, and i do want to run a marathon soon :)

There are a handful of stretches to do daily. Also build up the muscles surrounding. Hip Flexors etc. Ibuprofen after runs to help the inflammation when it happens. I've been told to use it before running, but i don't like to take it when i don't have to.

Rolling it out after runs is a must. But the most important thing is to strengthen the muscles that support the knee.

Ran the Salida half marathon, in Salida, Co. Fun location, and always a good time with a bunch of nuts.

Start was at 7,060ft and max climb was to 8,000ft, just not sure of the overall elevation gain. Total miles 13.34 and finished it in 3:14 :laughing (no training). :teeth

Lots of good drinking and running.

Managed to runslowly walk up the Incline outside Manitou Springs on the first day there to try and shock my body into faster altitude acclimation. Not sure if it worked, but I managed pretty well, and not too beat up afterwards.

Of course we got to drinking after the race, and after an untold amount of Gimlets at the distillery, we graduated to pitchers of green PBR. Last photo, is a blur, but I think we had been playing ping pong at the Vic.

I also think I was finally talked into trying a 50 miler. :facepalm

There was 13 of us in the house we rented, and one of the ladies in our group took 2nd place in the half marathon, overall. She won it last year at 1:50 :wtf

Ha, bumping for this year - I signed up for the Full, eep. I did the KP 1/2 this past weekend and did my own personal best 1/2 (1:38:54 by Strava), so I'll keep working on it.

Whoa.. that's awesome 1/2 Marathon time.

Congrats!

I'd be down. Saturday or Sunday morning, maybe along the bay/bridge trail starting in Emeryville?

K. Anyone else?.

I'd do sat mornings. Sat morn are my trail run days at Point Pinole, 10K. I'll trade that day for a BARF Run Club session. I've got a race (June, The Riveter Marina Bay Half M) coming up on pavement so it will work out.

Another two Barfers maybe one more? We can call it on?

Maybe ride the next day lol?
