I was in a left sweeper, and the bank flattened out quicker than i anticipated.
First off I dont need nor want a scolding. I wasnt racing nor was i riding like an idiot.
First off, I am not a saint by any means (ask Paroxysm) but you were riding like an idiot and I am giving you a scolding whether you think you need one or not.
It was daylight, it was dry, your bike did not explode, a deer did not jump out in front of you - you pointed your bike at a rock wall and - surprise - hit it. I would be less inclined to scold if you had crashed before you rode into the dirt (unless it was because you stabbed your brake, an idiot maneuver).
It is very very very very unlikely that you were going so fast your bike could not have physically made the turn. I have seen people overcome the physical capabilities of their motorcycle but most of them get paid to ride.
I was once given very sound advice, "If you think you are in a turn too fast, just flick the bitch in there, you'll probably make it." Please try it once your bike is fixed. WARNING: This advice was directed at sportbike riders, may not work with cruisers or other low-clearance bikes.
What if it hadn't been a rock wall? What if it had been a little girl on a bicycle riding legally on the side of the road? What if it had been a right-hand sweeper that 'flattened out quicker than you anticipated' and a school bus had been coming the other way?
I don't know you, you probably are not an idiot, but you were absolutely riding like an idiot, at least for a split second. I have ridden like an idiot on more than a hundred occasions and for this I apologize.
I ride a black KTM Duke II, a green EX500, or a blue and yellow Husky on the street. If you see me riding like an idiot (and I'm sure I will again), please stop me and remind me that this is not acceptable behavior.
I don't care if you wear leathers or if you speed or if you ride wheelies or back 'er in or drag your knee (James Randolf can drag knee at 4 mph). Just please try and avoid riding like an idiot and for those times that you do, own it.
Accidents happen and I'm truly sorry that you had one. I am grateful that you are not hurt worse. I am also grateful that you did not hurt others.
My dad is not a TV repairman but if I can help with your bike, please ask. I love you as I love all my riding brothers and sisters but damn-it, when you ride like an idiot, don't deny it.
I just realized something, I am giving myself a scolding, not you. I wasn't there, I have no idea what happened except for your own account ("I rode my bike off the road") You just happened to post at a bad time for me. I need to scold somebody.
