lane sharing mirror bumping

I did something stupid yesterday. I was splitting lanes at a stoplight in San Francisco while the cars were stopped. I misjudged and clipped the mirror of the car on my right with my right mirror. :wtf I looked back and made a vague "I'm sorry" gesture to the driver and kept on going. I felt like a jerk, but there was no damage done to either vehicle. So my question is: what do you do when you clip a mirror? :dunno

Uhh. What clipped mirror? It never happened!

Seriously though, just put yourself in the other persons shoes and how would you honestly feel if that happened.

Judge the width of where you are splitting. If you were doing that at highway speeds or were just a few inches off you could've had worse happen.

Thanks for the link. Guess I should have hit search first.

I've been riding full-time for a year now so I'm still new, but this is the first time that I've clipped a mirror while lanesharing. I had no idea what the right thing to do was in the moment that it happened. Hopefully there won't be a next time, but if there is I'll be sure to pull over and apologize and give insurance info if necessary. I don't want to be a douche about it.

Also, I don't laneshare unless traffic is at a stop or very close to it. But thanks for the perspective on how bad that could have been if I was at highway speeds!

The only time I clipped a mirror(had a few close calls) was in Antioch splitting up to a light. I hit the mirror and stopped. I walked my bike backwards to talk to the driver. She was in shock and told me it was fine after I had already apologized at least two or three times. The end:twofinger

Well the worst possible scenario is a conviction for leaving the scene of an accident. Did you stop and ascertain there was no damage? How do you define no damage? Are you prepared for the consequence if there was a paint streak left on her mirror? Do you think lane splitting gives you the right to HIT SOMEONE's CAR due to your inferior (obviously ) moto skills?

bro, ya have to pull to the right and stop. Not stopping is a hit/run, a misdemeanor. The first time I hit a dude's mirror, whatever, I've already planned on stopping, waiting to see if he pulls up behind, telling him to send me the freakin bill, give him my info and taking his. I already know that if I broke a motorized mirror, I'm looking at no less than $400. But it was my fault, so why ask the victim to pay for my inattention?

But that's just me.

If he drives by and gives me a wave, then all is cool and I lucked out, but the victim is NOT unhappy, and that's what's important.

He said there was no damage. Chill out, saying he needs to be off the streets is ridiculous :rofl

He rode off (Hit and Run), he DOESN'T KNOW if there is damage or not. He is JUST hoping. Hit and run is a crime, and we take people off the streets for a time out for that. But glad you want him to H&R you some time. :rofl

exactly. you do need to chill dude, he didn't run over a baby's head for chrissake

well...cars and bikes have to share the road 2gether!!....so when i'm in my cage, i usually move all the way to left if i'm in lane 1 which is the carpool lane...in the other lanes...for cages...try to stay in the middle of lane...so the bikes have more room when they are lane splitting....if all the bikes do not lane split, then i guess we have more traffic right??!!....get it.!!

if each person do the right thing everyday....then we can all have better days without mishaps...i hope...:)

Do you send money to the police when you speed?

Sure do everytime I get a ticket. :thumbup Funny how you guys defend someone commiting a Hit and Run. That will ALL change when it is your car he hits. Then it will be a post on here about the creep that hit your car on a bike. :rolleyes

He said no damage. I wouldn't care. I would let them feel stupid and bad, and would appreciate the "sorry" gesture.

Maybe you missed his follow-up post, but it sounds like he's gotten the point: Post #4

Read, and read again if you have too. :rolleyes He rode off, he doesn't know if there isn't damage. He just hopes there isn't damage, as he rode off so he couldn't know. And screw the sorry gesture.... that is worthless when the driver get's out of their car and finds scratches, or a crack.
