lane sharing mirror bumping

I ripped a guys mirror clean off last month (maybe longer) I pulled ove he drove by and gave me a peace sign!!

I now leave my mirrors loose enough that a good whack will spin them.
If you make eye contact-lift your shield most people are OK.
If you do Lombard St. In the city you're gonna clip mirrors!

I've made a very light tap on a mirror before. Because it was such a grazing contact I decided I wasn't going to try to pull over etc..
Probably the best way to handle it is to pull over up ahead. If the driver doesn't stop to talk to you, game over. It really isn't practical to try to communicate with the driver while sitting in the middle of traffic.
The drivers are already pissed at us lane splitters, so I guess it figures they might make an issue of it , even if there is no damage. By providing them the opportunity to exchange info, they can't cry hit and run.

I had my mirror clipped on my truck by a lane splitter two years ago. I was pissed he didn't acknowledge the incident but accessed there was no damage so I didn't "attempt" to follow. Basically it was a hit and run, regardless of how minor you think the damage is/was.

Yup, it is a hit and run regardless of the amount of damage. Technically the cager could even claim hit and run AFTER the fact even if they waved you on saying things like "no, I was waving him over, not on" or whatever.

It's always best to pull over. If THEY drive off then you're clear because you did make the attempt.

Or, you could just make damn sure you don't clip mirrors. I haven't clipped one yet even though I've been damn close a few times. And there's been one time I stopped, flipped the dudes break away mirror back, moved my handle bars passed then put his mirror back. I flipped my helmet up and smiled at the guy and he started laughing :teeth

Good! :thumbup To bad the others on here don't see anything wrong. I will have to go with the cagers on outlawing lane-splitting with people's attitudes on it.

I'm an outlaw here in OR. These commies don't want me lane splitting.

But tough luck - on that 2 lane highway, you just keep the tires in between the double yellow and it's all good.:thumbup

Yeehaw!

I am moving to Eugene soon... Lane sharing is illegal? That is pretty lame. I bet you don't have traffic like we do though:thumbup

It's true. No splitting allowed. A ton less traffic and no need to split on most highways.

But if you pull into town and approach a red light behind a bunch of cars-you wanna rip your hair out! I can't do it. Haven't been ticketed for it yet.

When I ride with my buddy(he'll all goodytwoshoes) - he stops behind the cars. Me? Fuck it - straight to the front. I'd rather wait for him at the next stop than sit there like a dummy.

Every now and then you get a slow person on the highway, but 99% of the time, you could pass them, even on a double-yellow with oncoming traffic and be all good.

Enjoy it up here when it's warm. Because winters suck.

happened to me a couple months ago. I was splitting to the light and thought 'this one will be just a tad tight' and in fact I did gently tap the left mirror on the cars right mirror. My mirror moves easily enough, so it just deflected. I walked the bike back to the cage and apologized profusely. They were very good natured about it and suggested I 'be careful out there!'. I blushed crimson, told them they were absolutely right and thanked them for their kind thought.

It was very cool they were kind folks and not some crazed cager who is already pissed I'm splitting lanes. Now I take extra care to simply walk the bike through anything that looks like it might be 'just a tad tight', or just wait in traffic at the four corners (of the cars around me in the split).

I did something stupid yesterday. I was splitting lanes at a stoplight in San Francisco while the cars were stopped. I misjudged and clipped the mirror of the car on my right with my right mirror. :wtf I looked back and made a vague "I'm sorry" gesture to the driver and kept on going. I felt like a jerk, but there was no damage done to either vehicle. So my question is: what do you do when you clip a mirror? :dunno

Our friend 'White Roadster' used to have his tag as 'Master Baiter' and then changed it to 'Curve Lover' IIRC.

Do you think some people need to find new ways to have fun, how about a :ride :wtf ?

:twofingers to all the players :rofl

Sorry, but the OP couldn't know for sure if there was no damage without going back and looking at the glass. Sure the mirror housings are made to move now, but a sharp whack can still break the glass in them. And you're not going to see that from the front are you?

So let's try this scenario: the guy in the car knocks over your bike but just leaves because he "didn't see any damage" when he glanced back. I think you might be a little miffed that someone isn't treating your stuff with the respect YOU think it deserves.

We don't need to be aggravating the people in cars. It's bad enough as it is.

(I am pretty sure the OP got this message some time ago, BTW. :thumbup)

Well, it's said and done this time, but definitely stop next time.

It is a hit and we should extend the same courtesy to drivers as we would want if someone lovetapped our vehicle while parking. Just because you don't see damage doesn't mean it didn't occur. Pretty much anything will scratch paint. Personally, door dingers, parking tappers, and mirror taps are unacceptable. If contact occurs, own up to it. I hate coming back to find scratches and dings.

I just have strong opinions. Having vehicles damaged by other people, and then them taking off is just plan shitty (guess others feel the same since they made a law against it).

If you have never walked out to your car in parking lot and found it damaged from a hit and run, then you just cannot understand the feeling.... :kicknuts I think everyone of those people should be :deadhorse . I will turn in any plate I see that does it, and help the injured party out anyway I can.

It is a very, very sad time we live in that I am the "bad guy" cause I am very much against hit and runs.... :rant

If you'll read the majority of the posts we are all against it. It's all about delivery. There's very rarely ever a need for name calling and that usually has the reverse of the intended effect.

Ok, that is one example of how that could be said... here's a bad example.

You @Q#$%@#$% moron! Learn to read! Almost all of us are saying it's a hit and run. If you'd learn to talk to people, we wouldn't get defensive and call you a douche bag.

See the difference?

</lesson> :teeth

I clipped a mirror the other day ever so slightly because right as I was splitting the driver moved over a little. I pulled over to the side and the dude just kept on rolling. No harm no foul but you should attempt to make sure its all good. Unless the guy was trying to block you, then fuck him:laughing

I've never clipped a mirror in 27 years. I have had to wiggle the bike as I rolled by to tuck a mirror under, though... :) But not that often.

Depends where you live.

My moto-mentor called in a really nice hit and run in his town (SF), four parked cars sideswiped and he had the license number of the car that did it. The police did not even pretend to take down the info, they told him that insurance would take care of it.

Has anyone here ever actually solved anything by pulling over on their bike, or ever had any damage done to their precious cage?
The raging string-em-up stuff in this thread is all theory. Every anecdotal fact I have supports carrying on as you were.

Carry on as you were.

Wait just a minute:

If you mess up the paint on my mirror it is going to be at least $100, and if you crack it it will be much, much more. Why should I have to pay?????

Why? because you think that the paint on your mirror is worth that much.:rofl That's your mistake, not mine.

If buy the Mona Lisa and strap it to my bumper, are you responsible for that?

What's deluxe becomes debris. If you are not okay with that, perhaps you should transport your car on a trailer.

Only time I've clipped mirrors is when two cars are freaking kissing each other at a light. Clipped one and missed the other one with less than an inch to spare... move over dammit!
